I know it’s my fault, but WYYD? FB Marketplace

Just spent £50 on a Next to me crib which should’ve been £200 full price. The pictures the person sold it with are not pictures of the one she has, or maybe they were when it was brand new. They gave us it in the bag so we carried it to the car trusting it was like the pictures, because it was throwing it down with rain. It’s covered in horrible stains, with orangey brown stains on the lining under the mattress so it’s not even as if a new mattress would do the job (which we were going to buy anyway). There’s two pieces of dirty clearly used! cotton wool under the mattress and loads of pet hair on the whole thing. I have thrown better condition items away myself - why on earth would anyone sell it for such a cost?!!

We’ve completely wasted £50 and I feel so silly when my aim was to try and save money and the environment by purchasing pre loved.

DH thinks we ought to resell it at something like £30 and be clear the condition is used/fair. I just feel so annoyed with myself and don’t know what else I can do.

The advert said very good condition and only used for 3 months.

I’ve never seen a worse quality item tbh.

So if you've never seen a worse quality item, why on earth would you think you can re-sell describing it as "used/fair"?

Try giving it a proper clean and see how it looks then.

dottiedodah · 04/02/2024 14:42

Always check first. However too late now .Clean it up and sell on as seen for £25/£ 30 maybe .Really bad form when people do this

Butterdishy · 04/02/2024 14:44

Can't you clean it?

yarnwitch · 04/02/2024 15:20

Would it really not be useable or resellable if you hot washed everything removable, disinfected the rest, and replaced the mattress?
People have very different ideas of what good condition is, so they might not have knowingly scammed you as such. If they don't respond to your message there's not much you can do except leave them bad feedback.

Rtc12 · 04/02/2024 15:25

We had a next to me crib and the material comes off and can be washed in the washing machine. It's worth giving it a go maybe with stain remover?

SparkyBlue · 04/02/2024 15:31

Like a PP says everything on a next 2 me can be washed so give everything a good clean and it might come up really well. . It's absolutely disgusting of her to sell it on like that.

Pleiades2020 · 04/02/2024 15:36

Unfortunately FB marketplace is sold as seen. A good tip for the future on fb and vinted is to look behind the pictures, meaning look at what's in the background, how clean things look, etc. You can of course resell and it would be ok to do so morally as long as you note all the defects.

mcmooberry · 04/02/2024 16:33

I would take very clear pictures and follow up with the seller, I got a steam mop in apparently immaculate condition and when I used it (soon as I got home) it flooded the kitchen. I immediately got in touch with the vendor who took a while to get back to me but did - eventually - transfer the money to my bank and we took it to the tip. I looked at her FB profile to see where she worked, was prepared to ring her at work if she didn't respond as the whole thing really pissed me off.

£50 is too much to throw away, I hope the seller will see sense.

Hankunamatata · 04/02/2024 16:37

Wash it and sell it on with accurate photos

Crumpleton · 04/02/2024 17:42

I'd be taking photos then message them saying it looks like they've given you the wrong one as the one they handed over is nothing like the pics they posted and in an awful state. Then ask "how would you like to rectify the problem please, a straight swap or return my money"
Many thanks.

I had a problem with a Facebook marketplace purchase. I went back to the house where I bought the item and asked for my money back. They gave it to me. Worth a try?
