Just that really. I want to close my eyes but don't know if that's rude/weird.

The hair washing bit never lasts long enough for me. I love it.

I do. I also close my eyes at the dentist.

Same! My hairdresser does a cracking head massage when she puts conditioner on. So relaxing I've nearly gone off to sleep before now!

This reminded me of the dolls we had as kids that do that 😂

I am in stitches at this comment. 😂

SonOfAGoodStrongWoman · 03/02/2024 22:23

Hairdresser and dentist, my eyes are closed.

AlwaysAuntie · 03/02/2024 22:26

Yeh I close my eyes, best part of having haircut is having hair washed. I also wear glasses and take them off so they don’t get in the way, so I close my eyes a bit because they get sore looking at blurry shapes.

Roadtripwithkids999 · 03/02/2024 22:27

I cut my own. My head is so sensitive I find the whole process very painful so I haven't been to the hairdressers since I was 18... I'm 32 now. Get it from my nan. Thanks nan

Remaker · 03/02/2024 22:32

Yes I close my eyes. My hairdresser loves to do a hard scrub and occasionally drops of water and even shampoo go flying- don’t want that in my eye! They do an amazing head massage with the conditioner too. It has never occurred to me to keep my eyes open tbh.

stonkytonk11 · 03/02/2024 22:32

Always close my eyes too and love having my hair washed...would happily sit there longer.

Eyes shut at dentist too (and earphones in with music playing) some sensory reduction definitely helps me in this situation 🙂

redalex261 · 03/02/2024 22:34

Closed eyes definitely - at dentist too! Also find the quiet darkness of the opticians very hypnotic too - mine has a super soothing voice so it takes me all my concentration not to “rest my eyes” during eye exam (crazy, I know!)

DodgyMcDodgerson · 03/02/2024 22:35

I want to because my hairdresser
incorporates a mini scalp massage while she’s putting the conditioner on etc but I feel really awkward closing my eyes, obviously if I was face down on a massage table I would but there’s something about sitting at a sink facing the rest of the salon closing my eyes while my head gets massaged feels embarrassing….doesn’t really make sense as massages are meant to be relaxing I know! I’m way too uptight

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 03/02/2024 22:36

Yes, I do. I don't want to look up her nostrils. (That's not really why! Contact lenses.) I hate having my hair washed because my head is so sensitive. It always feels as if I'm being bashed about. But it's a necessary evil if I want my hair cut.

LegoDeathTrap · 03/02/2024 22:42

I don’t!! But it very much seems I should!! Have I been rude?? Do my hairdresser and my dentist both hate me now??? Argh this is one problem I didn’t know I had!!

AntonFeckoff · 03/02/2024 22:44

Yes. And I especially like having my hair washed/head massaged by a male hairdresser with strong hands. Bliss.

mollyfolk · 03/02/2024 22:46

I feel like it would be weird leaving your eyes open. Like you’d be looking up at them.

MassageForLife · 03/02/2024 22:49

Those backwash sinks must be more comfortable for some people than others. I find it borderline painful, and I cope with pain well (to the point that my doctor wasn't sure if my issue was my gallbladder because she didn't have to scrape me from the ceiling when she palpated it. It was ).

I do have a short neck though. That's my guess as to why it's so bad.

So if I actually decided to put myself through that again, I would close my eyes, but not because it's relaxing. It's not. But because I don't want splashes of soapy water near my open eyes.

Sofafor2for1 · 03/02/2024 22:57

LetsgoLego · 03/02/2024 21:43

No. My hairdresser is like a tazmanian devil when it comes to washing hair, it's horrible and not in the least but relaxing

I think we may have the same hairdresser!!! Never felt so unrelaxed in my life

Tessisme · 03/02/2024 23:08

Sofabum · 03/02/2024 21:41

No, I hate the entire process and feel very tense. I don't know why people enjoy other people being near their head. I wish my hairdresser had TVs on the ceiling or a magic eye picture so I didn't just have to look at ceiling tiles though.

I feel the same! Can't stand having my hair washed. Someone TOUCHING my scalp😬😆 My eyes remain firmly open at all times just in case they get any funny ideas about giving me a head massage. I also hate armpits near my face while having my hair cut. And straining to hear them ask me questions about my non existent holidays over the noise of a hair dryer. I don't go very often. I imagine it's obvious to most when they see the state of my hair.

LancaLass · 03/02/2024 23:08

Do what feels comfortable for you! I used to close my eyes. But hated having my hair washed, having the scalp massage thing and actually had to tell them to stop. I was polite about it mind. Get round it now by booking appt when I have day off and washing hair, go down with it wet and get a dry cut!! Saves a fair bit of money too

gano · 03/02/2024 23:18

I felt the same as you, and although I really wanted to close my eyes, i was worried it would be weird! So I just asked the hairdresser if most people close their eyes or keep them open. She said most people close them, but if they're chatting some people keep them open. Made me feel less weird about closing my eyes.

TheFormidableMrsC · 03/02/2024 23:24

I actually wash my hair before the appointment as I can't bear the sensation of laying back over a sink.

Fionaville · 03/02/2024 23:27

Yes I do. I even close them when I'm getting my hair combed and cut, sometimes.
I used to work as a Saturday girl in a hairdressers, hairwashing. The boss used to say if the client closes their eyes, it means you are doing a good job making them relaxed. It's definitely not rude.

ShippingNews · 03/02/2024 23:29

Yes, always. Partly because I'm a bit worried about the water splashing them, and partly to enjoy the experience.

Walker1178 · 03/02/2024 23:54

Yes, but I feel my hairdressers actively encourage it by having really bright lights. I have to close my eyes so I’m not blinded when looking up at the ceiling

PPTorPDF · 04/02/2024 00:00

I keep mine open. I'd feel weird and rude closing them to somebody.

Talkingfrog · 04/02/2024 00:12

Some of the time - but I have my glasses off and nothing is in focus when they are open anyway.
Same goes for the dentist.
