Would you replace the bath after Mr Muscle Foam Unblocker leaked ..

greenyelllow · 31/01/2024 17:20

the foam leaked back up the plug hole, obviously hasn’t worked to unlock the bath drain. Bottle says in bold capitals not to let this happen and to keep away from children etc. Baby has baths in this bath and we have nothing else to use. I’m very worried, I can’t even rinse the bath until after a drain unlocked company comes out as the water just comes straight back up. Would you replace the bath?

No , I’d get the blockage seen to and then clean it .

bridgetreilly · 31/01/2024 17:22

Of course not. Get the drain sorted, then clean the bath thoroughly. It’ll be fine.

Tootingbec · 31/01/2024 17:24

No need to replace the bath. The warning about not allowing it to bubble back up is more about it potentially damaging the bath surface - but from a cosmetic perspective I am sure rather than anything else.

as soon as you get the blockage cleared just give the bath a good clean and rinse and all will be fine

Sapphire387 · 31/01/2024 17:26

Errrrr what the hell?

You just wait until the company comes and unblocks the drain, and then you clean your bath. Not sure why you are even considering replacing the bath.

I'm sure baby will be ok with sponge washes for a few days until you can get it sorted.

feathermucker · 31/01/2024 17:27

No, you don't replace the bath.

Call in the professionals.

Dacadactyl · 31/01/2024 17:27

No not at all. I'd get blockage looked at, then ask the men who cleaned it what they reckon and until that time I'd wash the baby in the kitchen sink

greenyelllow · 31/01/2024 17:37

Thanks. So just clean with bleach then rinse? Just worried about the baby that’s all

Deathbyfluffy · 31/01/2024 17:38

Yes, it’ll be fine. The stuff isn’t good for skin, but what harm do you think it’ll do to baby once you’ve got rid of it all?

The active ingredient in drain unblocker is caustic soda. All you need is a spritz of vinegar to neutralise it and rinse with plenty of water. It's perfectly safe after that.
DO NOT put bleach on it. The chemical reaction will produce toxic gases. Never mix chemicals you are unsure of.

Tootingbec · 31/01/2024 17:41

Actually I wouldn’t use bleach - might react with the drain unblocker if there is any still lurking in the pipe.

Not saying the above to make you more worried btw - highly unlikely but honestly the less chemicals you use the better generally.

Just use hot water and a sponge and it will be good. Or a bit of bicarbonate of soda and lemon if you want it to smell “clean”

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 31/01/2024 17:41

Just rinse it after your blockage has been cleared. Buy a baby bath to wash the baby in if necessary.

LauderSyme · 31/01/2024 17:41

Yes just clean with bleach then rinse really well. Baby will be okay with a caring mum like you 💕

You should never mix bleach with caustic soda. It produces chlorine gas.

LauderSyme · 31/01/2024 17:44

Shit sorry ignore me then! Sorry! I did not automatically assume there would be caustic soda in the drain unblocker.

NO NO NO NO NO!!!!

Do NOT use bleach with a sink unblocker unless you want to go to hospital with burnt lungs.

Plenty of water, then more water, then normal cleaning product such as Cif. Then more rinsing as usual.

greenyelllow · 31/01/2024 17:58

Thanks can anyone explain why just water isn’t sufficient then? I am now thinking the less chemicals the better, would water kit get rid of it best?

I actually used bleach just before using the drain unblocker, not great is it

Water is sufficient but if you are at all worried, then adding vinegar (acid) to caustic soda (alkaline) will neutralise it to safe levels. But I always just run a tap for a few minutes and it is absolutely fine to touch afterwards.

MereDintofPandiculation · 31/01/2024 18:06

Caustic soda is an alkali and is caustic. If you mix an acid and an alkali, you get water and a neutral compound, one that is neither acid nor alkali.

So you could just wash it away with water. But you will probably feel safer if you add an acid (vinegar) so that you know that any microscopic residue is neutral and won't hurt anybody.

I wouldn't worry about the bleach you added first. It obviously hasn't reacted with a noxious gas. Presumably got absorbed in whatever is locking the pipe.

When we had only a shower the kitchen sink was used all the time once she became too big for the plastic bath and could sit up, I'm sure thousands of children have been bathed that way.

OneFrenchEgg · 31/01/2024 18:56

I'd wait until it can be rinsed thoroughly. Can I just add though that after numerous pourings of drain unblocker a random £1.50 drain rod from Tesco did the trick and I didn't have to call the plumber. Also satisfying and disgusting at the same time.

TheHateIsNotGood · 31/01/2024 19:02

Not sure that the foam bubbling up means it hasn't worked at all, sometimes it needs more than one go. Did you follow with a lot of hot water afterwards. I'd concentrate on getting that blockage cleared and wash the baby in a sink for a day or 2. Then get one of those 'drain strainers' to put over the plughole to prevent future blockages; useful in the kitchen sink too.

LIZS · 31/01/2024 19:05

Don't add bleach. Just rinse it round with warm soapy water.

personally I'd wash it with fairy liquid and rinse well.

im a bit of a fuss pot, so I'd let it dry and do that again before putting the baby in it.

but definitely no other chemicals!!

UpUpUpU · 31/01/2024 19:10

Your baby won’t dissolve if you clean the bath??

Im confused how you are happy to clean it with bleach then put your baby in it but not after cleaning g the unblocker?

greenyelllow · 31/01/2024 19:15

@UpUpUpU because it says in bold and capitals do not get it in the actual bath or let it rise up into the bath.
