To roll my eyes over cake drama

I took some cakes into work today because I had some good news to share (new granddaughter).

They were individual cakes and there weren't enough for every single employee, so I was hoping anyone who took one would enjoy it.

Anyway, a colleague picked one up and took a bite, then immediately declared it was "too rich and filling", asked for a knife and cut it in half so thar someone else could have it.

She then watched other people eat the cakes whilst asking with faux shock "how can you manage a whole one?"

My eyes were rolled so far back I was looking behind me!

Your colleague is a prick. I can't stand people who do that. Make sure to piss on her parade, if she's ever lucky enough to have one!
Congratulations on your new granddaughter 💐

Stripeyhatngloves · 31/01/2024 01:07

I'm hungry now, dang it.

There's a bunch of competitive under-eaters on mumsnet too who will be shocked and horrified if anyone suggests more than one new potato, 5 peas and a carrot batton as the accompaniments for a slice of chicken for a full sunday roast.

It's just another way of attention-seeking.

Next time make a bunch of normal cakes and one quarter-size tiny one just for her.

Yes a teeny tiny one bite cake! Since you know she couldn't possibly eat a whole single serving cake! In my office you'd have been the hero of the day bringing cakes. Congratulations on your new grand daughter!

There weren't enough to go round she probably thought it would be rude and wasteful to toss the remainder in the bin so thought best to offer it out. If I bought some I would prefer to see them eaten than in the bin. I think people are making a mountain out of a mole hill here. Not everyone wants to eat a whole cupcake, and many very tasty ones from bakery have a very generous amount of frosting which is filling and too much for many people.

This.
I really don’t get the outrage here. She shouldn’t have commented on others eating them, but why is it such a big deal that she found them too rich?

She probably thought they looked nice but they weren’t to her taste and didn’t want to just bin it. Unless there’s going to be a drip feed about other strange behaviour from said colleague then what’s the big deal!

Sometimes things don’t taste as good as they look. Any of the other colleagues might not have liked them and just ate them so they didn’t seem rude. Especially if they noticed OP rolling her eyes…

WandaWonder · 31/01/2024 04:58

Sounds really odd but again I don't get this 'must be jealous' thing

I am not sure what is odder really, do people really think someone is jealous every time they make a negative comment?

Lamington?

Most definitely, but a fancy one. Actually not that hard to make, and very yummy.

muckcook · 31/01/2024 07:45

I always reply to this type of thing with

" aw, eyes bigger than your stomach?l"

It's a little bit mean because it implies greed on their part, but may stop the nonsense

Again, it's the performance these people make of it that is the annoying part. Going on and on about "Ooh I can't believe you've eaten ALL THAT. I couldn't eat ALL THAT."

Mind you, this is Mumsnet, where performative undereating seems to be a competitive sport. So it's perhaps not a surprise why some people can't understand why it's annoying/a bit worrying.

DerekFaker · 31/01/2024 07:52

And saying to someone "How could you manage a whole one?" IS rude, both to the person eating and the person who made the cakes.

This is one of the cakes in question.

That's not a cupcake. What it is is lush and I could scoff the whole thing easily.

Are there any going spare 🤤

Gobolina · 31/01/2024 08:41

I don't mind if people in my workplace touch my food. I work from home so its only DH making something for me 😂.

These threads always reinforce my resolve that I will never, ever go back into an office setting again if I can bloody well help it.

WhateverTrevorrr · 31/01/2024 09:24

Definitely a mumsneter.

diddl · 31/01/2024 10:13

That cake looks really nice-and easily big enough to quarter😂

LuckySantangelo35 · 31/01/2024 11:35

What a fool she sounds, who is gonna eat the rest of the cake when half of it has been in her gob?!

StephanieSuperpowers · 31/01/2024 11:38

She's just saving someone else from the sheer effort of being forced to consume excess cake by making it unappetising. They won't suffer from the severe stomach ache and sugar headache she feels coming on!

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 31/01/2024 12:17

Sounds like mil and her Yorkshire pudding aversion. She’s overweight so calories get in anyway despite this.

FamBae · 31/01/2024 12:24

The cake looks lovely, I love cake! but as I'm on a diet I might have asked if anyone wanted to share (for damage limitation), I certainly wouldn't have put half back (which is why I'm on a diet 😆)

Probably jealous, does she have a child she wishes would settle down and provide a grandchild?

Well that's a reach if you're serious! Is there any behaviour that doesn't get put down to jealousy on MN?
The woman could have ten grandchildren already, or be in her 20s for all we know. (But possibly jealous that the OP has a nicer coat than her, or got a chocolate cake and she got left with the lemon.)

WhoIsnt · 31/01/2024 13:00

Taking a bite out of it is weird but I think if there's not enough for everyone my default would be to cut one in half and just take half...

It's just considerate surely?

‘The calories get in anyway’ 😂

I have a few relatives like this. Absolute shock and horror that you might have a large portion of cake or have hot meals for both lunch and dinner! Yet have somehow managed to make themselves massively overweight.

Why is it confusing that someone can be overweight but also not a fan of cake? Overweight people don’t just go around inhaling everything in sight you know 🙄

I’m also not a huge fan of cake either. I am, however, a very big fan of crisps and wine.

I don't find that very confusing, to be honest. They've probably trained themselves to avoid what seems like inconsistent things over several decades of trying different diets that definitely had a downer on a certain food. I recall reading as a teenager that you avoid bread on the basis that less bread means less butter. And then I stopped eating butter and still don't. But that hasn't made me thin!

bluelavender · 31/01/2024 15:29

I have idlily wondered how those who are over the top horrified at, and comment on portions cope with shrinkflation- will there be less of this behaviour in future? Or will people comment dramatically at ever smaller portions?
