To ask what ONE thing you’d want the government to spend more money on? Or top three perhaps…

Inspired by one of the threads on the £100k cut off for funded nursery hours. On these threads, there are always replies that there are better things the government could be spending money on than paying for childcare for higher earners.

I don’t disagree - but I think we’ve all got so used to the idea that there isn’t any money for ANYTHING.

So if you could fund or increase funding to any one thing (or top three if you can’t choose), what would it be? Blank chequebook time.

And is there anything you would stop funding to…

For me, it’s education. Fund more teachers (reducing workload) on better pay, improve facilities in all schools, and make sure there are no black spots with no primary school provision.

Meanwhile, I’d stop funding subsidised bars and restaurants in parliament. There are loads of food and drink options in Westminster - or they can eat in parliament but pay for it.

Not to pick on you but this illustrates that people don’t really know what things cost. The cost of food at the House of Commons and lords is c8m a year. The current cost of free school meals is 1.6bn.

yep stop the free food, but the cost is a drop in the ocean

However much it cost I still think a hot free school meal for every child is needed.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 29/01/2024 19:58

And yes, if I'm allowed to roll social care in with health into a single integrated system, that absolutely needs to be a priority.

StarDolphins · 29/01/2024 19:58
  1. NHS
  2. kept animals bill
  3. Crime/Justice/prisons

I don’t disagree, and I know this thread is a wish list but it does illustrate that you ask 100 people what they want and you get 150 answers.

loads of things people are listing I agree with. I guess my realist streak kicks in and wonders how. And appreciates how tough it is to prioritise

BobbyBiscuits · 29/01/2024 20:01

NHS
Disability benefits
Social Housing

(I don't have kids else it would obv be schools at no 1)

Mementomorissons · 29/01/2024 20:03

Housing.

Just anything to increase the availability of housing for everyone

trythisforsize · 29/01/2024 20:12

children
NHS

I agree and not the crap they serve up currently.

However PP makes a good point, posters on here really don’t know how much things cost.

Private school VAT would raise less than 1% of the education budget per year (1.6billion verses 116billion)

Ending non doms would raise £3billion. Now consider we spend £60billion on Universal Credit alone.

The PPE wastage was about £8billion; total NHS spending is £180billion

Ending non doms, recouping Tory wastage etc all very nice but is just tinkering around the edges

Els1e · 29/01/2024 20:17

Adult social care; NHS

Carriemac · 29/01/2024 20:20

NHS , needs massive cash injection . Pay people properly and give them the tools to do their jobs

Letsgetouttahere2023 · 29/01/2024 20:28

Children - education

Clawing back mis spent public funds, minimising waste, preventing excesses and cronyism (Michelle moane, please scandal, track and race, house of Lords, mp expenses etc)

Public health, swimming pools green spaces etc uk is fat and unhealthy

Transportation - prohibitively expensive and shit.

CaptainCachitoo · 29/01/2024 20:29

Various Espionage services so they can target all areas, military secrets, economic secrets, political secrets etc across the globe because the finances raised as an eg corporate espionage can be used to fund various other govt services.

Disease prevention
Food self-sufficiency
Energy self-sufficiency

We are helplessly reliant on foreign companies and imports for food and fuel and we are collectively failing to look after ourselves thinking the NHS will look after us

I’d bump up this forward looking stuff too plus defence

Cronyism and MP expenses would be a drop in the ocean, hardly worth the money it would cost to pursue it. I realise it’s frustrating because there’s a moral element to it, but this fixation on cronyism/wastage as a solution to all our financial ills is a total red herring.

Defence, education, mental health.

NHS, social care, education. Much of this could be achieved by restoring funding for local councils. That has been a big 'hidden cut'.

This

Cherrysherbet · 29/01/2024 20:50

Care homes. Better training and pay for carers. Our elderly people don’t get the care and respect they deserve. The decent carers aren’t valued. This needs to change.

Suitable mental health support for our young people in School.

The NHS. It’s broken.

LightSpeeds · 29/01/2024 20:54

I agree. For the same reason good teachers and good pastoral support are needed. Sometimes, for lots of reasons, parents can’t be trusted to do the best for their kids, regardless of income bracket.

Followed by other schools and NHS

HateMyselfToo · 29/01/2024 21:19

food security. (I think a lot of environmental stuff would come from this)

And a re-energised 'Buy British' campaign so people can choose to support the home economy if they wish.

PonyPatter44 · 29/01/2024 21:22

The NHS, especially MH provision.

Policing

Education.

If there's any extra, spend it on prisons, but TBH if there's more investment in MH, policing and schools, we can cope with the funding we have!
