To ask what ONE thing you’d want the government to spend more money on? Or top three perhaps…

Inspired by one of the threads on the £100k cut off for funded nursery hours. On these threads, there are always replies that there are better things the government could be spending money on than paying for childcare for higher earners.

I don’t disagree - but I think we’ve all got so used to the idea that there isn’t any money for ANYTHING.

So if you could fund or increase funding to any one thing (or top three if you can’t choose), what would it be? Blank chequebook time.

And is there anything you would stop funding to…

For me, it’s education. Fund more teachers (reducing workload) on better pay, improve facilities in all schools, and make sure there are no black spots with no primary school provision.

Meanwhile, I’d stop funding subsidised bars and restaurants in parliament. There are loads of food and drink options in Westminster - or they can eat in parliament but pay for it.

Schools and the NHS

NHS, degrees in nursing teaching etc would be free with a lock-in service period, schools.

  1. NHS. Focusing on Dentistry and mental health
  2. Illegal drugs are freely available on the streets and they cost the taxpayer millions. A vast number of children taken into care have a parent who has drug issues. The damage to these children can cost the taxpayer for years. Drugs fuel crime, mental health issues and violence. I would spend money on tackling that.
  1. Affordable housing.

Schools who are still part of the local authority and not a MAT. Give them at least a fighting chance to stay open.

Education.
Replace Ofsted with a fully accountable regulator that actually knows what it's doing.
NHS
Justice system needs a complete overhaul.

My mom is having to receive some of her chemo treatment in a mobile unit on the hospital carpark. So needless to say NHS.

children and family services
this is quite broad and covers foster care, childcare, mat & pat leave, senco, and schools. We all know that this sector is running on fumes and as a result we are failing many many children.

Housing.
you shouldn’t have to be a millionaire, or have dead relatives, to be able to afford a home. Shelter is a basic human right.

Universal free school meals

I’d spend money on policing to get knives off our street and tackle county lines properly.

Education (at all stages), NHS and social care. Treat all three as prestigious careers and recruit and pay the staff accordingly

Infrastructure

Attracting investors

Food and energy security, ie producing more at home

This is the only way we can improve things for the long term rather than just throwing huge sums of money about as sticking plasters, only for it to increase the national debt even more.

SchoolQuestionnaire · 29/01/2024 19:27

Social care for the elderly - I think this should be state run, although I think payment should continue to be means tested. It would be challenging but it’s such a fundamental requirement that it shouldn’t be left to the private sector for profit and getting this right would take a huge amount of pressure off the NHS.

Social housing - no one should be homeless, in emergency accommodation or living in mouldy, sub-standard housing. We are not a third world country.

Take away all the free or subsidised food for the Lord's and give every DC in the country at school/college until 19 a free hot meal every day or regardless of their parents salary.

Not to pick on you but this illustrates that people don’t really know what things cost. The cost of food at the House of Commons and lords is c8m a year. The current cost of free school meals is 1.6bn.

yep stop the free food, but the cost is a drop in the ocean

@Pottedpalm This may not be the sort of admin you mean - but one of the issues with the NHS is that there aren't ENOUGH managers. Managers ensure that resources are deployed efficiently, coordinate across divisions/elements/projects etc and generally are critical to an efficient organization. All the analysis I've seen points to the NHS having too little management and so running inefficiently (as anyone who's worked for a poorly managed company where everyone is working hard but not smart will recognize!)

Edited

Also on “things people don’t understand”

this is spot on but try and say you’re spending more taxpayers money on more managers in the nhs you’d get lynched. It’s an unpopular truth

Tackling poverty, especially but not exclusively for people with disabilities and long term health conditions.
