its not an unusual or 'different' name. she is now nearly 2. I know she doesn't have a whole lot to do with our kids but ffs would you not learn to spell your grandkids' names correctly. I should be grateful she managed dd1's but then she only has 4 letters and dd2 has 5 - maybe thats where I went wrong!?!?!

rant over sorry!

belgo · 20/03/2008 14:20

how many letters does she get wrong?

scorpio1 · 20/03/2008 14:20

lol at 5 letters!

I am not even getting started on the outlaws!

WallOfSilence · 20/03/2008 14:21

My BIL is called Damien.

His mum has spelled his last 6 Xmas cards to Damian.

Nowt as strange as folk.

dizzychixies · 20/03/2008 14:22

she drops the final 'e' off it, I know its only a small thing but am expected to fall over myself with gratitude that she's made an effort - she got it wrong 3 farking times [humph] in one delivery

will have to make sure dc3 only has a 4 letter name when they finally arrive, its obviously too much for some to cope with
and ranting over something so pathetic it just urks me

GryffinGirl · 20/03/2008 14:36

Four letters may not help! I have a four letter name and my inlaws always spell it wrong - as far as I know there is only one spelling of it! DH once corrected FIL and he said "Well, you could spell Gryffin's name this way!"

kritur · 20/03/2008 16:50

I have to admit to having occasional lapses on this front myself. My BIL is called Ian but after years living in scotland I know lots of Iain's so have been known to spell it wrong. It also doesn't help that he has a surname that ends in y but I used to teach a child with the same surname but ie. I know it's annoying to them when I occasionally get it wrong but I'm getting better over the years. I always think before writing these days!

loopylou6 · 20/03/2008 17:21

my monsterinlaw mis spells my dds name on purpose im sure of it, her name is charltte, and she varies between spellings of 'charlette' charlet' charlit' but then shes a drunken old bird with a vicious hatred of me so i reckon she does it on purpose, or maybe she just cants ee froma ll the whiskey she puts away

loopylou6 · 20/03/2008 17:22

PMSFL even I cant seem to spell her name, i obviously meant charlotte

sweetkitty · 20/03/2008 17:26

My Dad still cannot pronounce DD2's name and she is over 2, it's not difficult you pronounce it as you read it. He calls her the baby name DD1 used to when she was 18 month old and couldn't say her name.

Maybe I should call this one Jean

PABLOP · 20/03/2008 18:43

lol at loopylou

dizzychixies · 20/03/2008 18:53

oh good grief, Charlotte is on the list for this one if its pink in flavour - maybe I should rethink that to 'girl' or '3'?!?!

My DHs side of the family think James = Jamie. I mean it's not even shorter! Sarah = shara, shrah, sahra aswell MILs are I swear bound by law to be dim.

dizzychixies · 20/03/2008 18:57

well LofW if you are going to call your kids such unreasonable names...................................

OP posts:
LadyOfWaffle · 20/03/2008 18:58

I dread if I have a DS called Thomas next. It'll be Tommy, Thommy, Tom, Thom, Tomas...

LadyOfWaffle · 20/03/2008 18:58

Yeah I know, push the boat out and get all fancy, I guess it's no more than I deserve

dizzychixies · 20/03/2008 18:58

you forgot Tomo!!

dizzychixies · 20/03/2008 19:00

PMSL.

I suppose to be fair mine both have long names and its the shortened version we use but its ONLY EVER BEEN the shortened version we've used to that shouldn't have caused any confusion.

Am just slightly demented by them but suppose in comparison to some of the PIL stories I hear on here am in positive happy land

spell MIL name wrong in future correspondence very petty but funny

LadyOfWaffle · 20/03/2008 19:05

I couldn't spell my sisters name for years , it is pretty unusual though. I mean when I was like 14 odd I was still sticking in an extra N. Used to get muddled with Brian and Brain aswell.

dizzychixies · 20/03/2008 19:06

ooohh scottish as tempting as it is I've managed to get it right for the past 12yrs so not so sure I could arse it up now?!? I just think its good manners to make sure you have right spelling of someone you're addressing something to no? Even more so when concerned with your own grandchild, then again she is her 5th and mine do come last in the pecking order but thats a whole other thread!!

OP posts:
dizzychixies · 20/03/2008 19:07

my dd1 calls my brother uncle Rocket but thats because she couldn't say Robert when she was wee and we've never corrected it as frankly its the best nickname he's ever had and he likes it

but when its your 22month old grandchild?!?!

OP posts:
fledtoscotland · 20/03/2008 21:58

DS is called Matthew but both FIL and my gran spell it with one "t". i didnt even realise you could spell matthew with only one "t"

Sputnik · 20/03/2008 22:14

Mine spells DD's wrong.
And all the inlaws pronounce DS's wrong. They are straightforward names, it's not that they don't care, but they're just oblivious. And we see each other frequently. Grr

SlightlyMadSimnelCake · 20/03/2008 22:19

I have 3 children

For nearly 2 years MIL thought DTD2 was called something different. She still caount pronounce DTD1's name.

She can't spell any of them right. DTD1's name is bloody obvious - there is still only 1 real way to spell it. Fair enough DTD2's name has 2 spellings and we do use the less common.

Why the bloody hell we chose the name we did for DD3 I do not know. There are about 4+ variants of her name and another 2-3 ways to spell her abbreviated name.
