its not an unusual or 'different' name. she is now nearly 2. I know she doesn't have a whole lot to do with our kids but ffs would you not learn to spell your grandkids' names correctly. I should be grateful she managed dd1's but then she only has 4 letters and dd2 has 5 - maybe thats where I went wrong!?!?!

rant over sorry!

My sister has never spelt ds2's name right. Its Connor and she always spells it with an 'e'
When I was pg with ds5 we discussed girls names and I love Siobhan. Never could have had it though as no one would have been able to spell it

gingeme · 20/03/2008 22:34

Shes had 12 years to learn it too

Jane68 · 20/03/2008 22:36

I would be tempted to mispronounce and misspell her name. See how she likes it.

SoMuchToBits · 20/03/2008 22:44

Our son is a Jonathan. One year he had as a birthday present from his grandparents (dh's parents) a personalised book, with his name spelled "Jonathon". The same year he also received a differnt personalised book from dh's brother, with his name also spelled "Jonathon".

Dh's sister has a husband called Michael. But she always spells his name "Micheal".

Sometimes I despair of having in-laws who just cannot spell! But in other respects they are lovely!

dizzychixies · 20/03/2008 23:19

good grief - do you think when our kids get married we'll be invited along to the

'how to be ignorant PITA in-laws' classes that they all seem to have attended in a secret squirrel manner?

My dad registered my birth and spelled my name the way I have always spelled it. It's about the only thing he and I agree on. My mum and my brothers spell it differently. Nowt as queer as families.

My mil always gets ds name wrong its ZACH not Zac gets me proper wound up but doesnt seem to bother dp who says its an abreviation-wtf

Fossil · 21/03/2008 21:17

SIL is called Margaret, but MIL always pronounced it Mar-grit. Perhaps FIL chose it and she didn't like it. They're both dead, so we'll never know.

beautifuldays · 21/03/2008 21:20

my MIL can't spell either of my kids names. even thouth i have told her how to spell them lots of times...

Monkeytrousers · 21/03/2008 21:21

I always spell my mothers name wrong

So from my perspective...YABU

Kindereggsurpise · 21/03/2008 21:23

Sweetkitty
Every card my mum got from her MIL was addressed to Gean, so I would rethink the Jean idea.

DD has an unusual name (or unusual here) and MIL said that she will just call her the German version of DD's name. BIL said that since I had given up my fab Scottish name on marrying into their family, the least they could do is learn how to pronounce/spell our DD's name.

Breezey · 22/03/2008 00:57

MIL dyslexic, so could be forgiven, FIL gets muddled verbally, but elderly so can also be forgiven,
as live overseas DH sent out birth notification by e mail, spelt DS name wrong and took us 48 hours to notice when people started congratulating us on wrong name, I got very irate until realised they were replyiung to the message

tripletsandtwins · 22/03/2008 01:24

YANBU lol, my mother cannot get the dt1 and dt2s names right either and it gets me really annoyed, dd1s name is spelled with -y at the end, but she spells it -ie. Whereas dd2s name is supposed to be -ie, bu she spells it with a -y... I think she just does it to annoy me .

lovecat · 22/03/2008 15:52

MIL spells both mine AND dd's name wrong. What's really weird is she will write our names on the envelope correctly then spell them wrong inside the card! But she's a fab MIL in all other respects so it's obviously just one of her tics...

missmama · 22/03/2008 16:39

MIL made the baptismal cake for DS2. His name starts with an 'X' and ends 'er' she iced the cake and spelt it with a 'Z' and 'a'
For a long time (DS is now 7) we had to convice family that they had spelt it correctly and it was the cake that was wrong!

mumbear · 22/03/2008 17:47

my uncle still spells my name wrong. Im almost 26 Its also a really common name that you cant really change the spelling of!

terramum · 22/03/2008 18:05

YANBU....but it does seem to be a problem for some people...My Grandma spelt my Mums name wrong when she registered her birth

Willowwisp · 22/03/2008 20:49

My daughters name is Cerys, she was a week old and we were sitting in the doctors, proud as punch and the nurse shouted very loudly ........... Cerise!! FFS Cerise, everyone in the waiting room look at us as if we were mad for calling her that!!

Most people spell it Kerris as well, even though they all know I'm Welsh so it would be spelt the Welsh way!!

glaskham · 22/03/2008 20:56

my mother calls ds Decland instead of declan, and dd Befany instead of bethany...it annoys me, and when i'm in a foul anal mood i make a point of royally taking the piss that she cant say TH and not add a D to the kids names!!!
