To open my window on the bus

notknowledgeable · 28/01/2024 12:17

It seems to be a mission for some people to fight to have all the windows on the bus closed, for all of every journey? Why? Before covid this wasn't an issue - now it seems people have a point to make.

I get there can be a chilly draught, but just put your coat on, or put your hood up?

I am immunocompromised, and wear a mask and open the window on my way to and from work. Every single time I get ill, ( currently a couple of times a month) my classes are left with non specialist agency staff. I take all the precautions I reasonably can to keep from catching anything, but this constant battle on the bus every working day is really wearing my down.

I think the rule should be, if you want the window above your seat open then you swap places with the person behind who doesn’t want it. That way the person sitting below it won’t feel the air but the person behind will, so it’s a win-win.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 28/01/2024 20:04

With all due respect hun
you're only a teacher
not a brain surgeon
and clearly no response to a suggestion that could
solve your problems and mean no more public transport

No one is getting hay fever in January

I’m not talking about January, I’m talking in general, I have allergy symptoms from April to September.

Well, there are quite a few pages I have not caught up on, but the vote at the front says it all really 60/40. This is pretty much what it is on the bus - about 40% of people want to sit by an open window, and about 60% seem to want every window on the bus tight shut.

Never mind that people could die of covid or flu or chest infections if the windows are shut, but suffer no more than temporary discomfort if the windows are open.

And no, don't try and invent some convoluted scenario in which someone is going to have their life put at risk by the windows being open.

This very strongly illustrates the sheer selfishness among much of the population. "I will put your life at risk to save myself from temporary discomfort" - and no doubt these people are the first to complain if their child does not have a teacher, or their parent does not have health care.

If I sound angry, it is because I am angry. How did we end up with such a self centred, self absorbed selfish population?

Tomorrow the battle will start all over again. I get more and more assertive all the time. I see so many other people over ruled and bullied when they are just trying to get to their place of work safely. I originally was quite meek and mild and backed down and even got of the bus quite regularly. Not now. If I don't stand up for myself and everyone else like me on the bus, then the city really will end up back to sending students home because there are no teacher, and sending elderly people home because there are no carers.

This forum is full of people describing the horrendous affects of the current viruses and bacteria going round. Weeks and months of incapacity in many cases, and multiple hospital admissions. Yet people don't want to take basic hygiene precautions - fine, get ill, whether you are immunocompromised or not, you don't want these germs, but go ahead and get them - just don't force everyone around you to take that risk too, just because you don't want a draught around your neck

I stand with you OP, though we will be very much in the minority 😔

Alicewinn · 28/01/2024 20:53

I always open the bus window, it’s revolting when it gets steamed up

Comedycook · 28/01/2024 21:05

I'm a big fan of fresh air anyway. Festering in a warm airless space makes me feel quite queasy.

DontTouchMyDog · 28/01/2024 21:44

I've never come across this being an issue. Usually the bus driver has taken care of windows on any buses I've been on, and no-one changes it.

I think the problem is your sense of self importance, OP. No-one has a job that is as important as yours, or even more important, so they can deal with it. Your needs seem to come above anyone else's. Other people matter too.

PyongyangKipperbang · 28/01/2024 21:48

My father has a severe lung condition where he cannot leave the house in the very cold weather, yes he has ended up in hospital with it. This is an immediate thing not "picking up an infection he could have got anywhere but is blaming the bus" but actually being taken in an ambulance straight away.

REAL consequences not some made up "this is what I think is to blame" bullshit.

As a result, I am now his carer and drive him everywhere because people like you think that your illness is worse than his. And you are asking when people became so self centred? The irony!!

Completely support this comment. Some people who are immune compromised are seriously affected by cold and it could land them in hospital. That doesn't matter though, as long as OP gets her needs met.

hummmmm · 28/01/2024 22:04

If they can't be in the cold how do they get to the bus stop and wait for the bus? 🤔

It doesn't seem to occur to OP that other people can be made ill by sitting in the cold. Other people's illness is clearly unimportant, and we're just silly.

Ah but OPs a teacher don’tcha know! Her job is the ONLY one that matters!

TerrysOrangeScot · 28/01/2024 22:21

I forgot some buses have windows that open. Our local buses now do not. They have the heating on in winter and AC for summer. The only window on the bus is the driver inside their cab.

Waiting for the OP to ask what my father does for a living and the complete dismissal as it not being anywhere near as important as her Core Subject Teacher job Hmm

A car would likely be more beneficial?

I understand your situation but I feel its a big entitled ti believe the world revolves around you.

I don't understand why you are even using public transport if it makes you so unwell

Temporary discomfort???!

Convoluted scenarios??!

That's your response to the very serious medical conditions that PP are describing?? The medical conditions that could very easily land them in hospital or in severe pain and bed bound?

Multiple sclerosis, arthritis, COPD....I think I'd describe those as a little more than temporary discomfort.

Jesus fucking Christ. The level of your selfishness knows no bounds.

You're not the only person that matters. But you are the only one on this thread insisting that you're the most important.

Absolutely no point talking to people like you. Disgusting. Just disgusting.

May karma work its magic and jam shut every bus window you ever try to open....

Do you have any proof it's from the bus though? You are a teacher.. Why is it the bus and no other factor in your life such as supermarkets etc?

Don't be daft. I have arthritis myself. None of those things are going to mean you are incapacitated by sitting on a bus with a window open 😂

Taxis? Surely if this is such an issue and we'll documented via health care professionals you'll be eligible for PIP.

Unfortunately, if there really is no other alternative, you also have to think of others.

The bus is not aware of your circumstances nd therefore you also aren't aware if others.

Get a disability lanyard, that may help.

Imagine being this dismissive of other people's health conditions but wanting consideration for yours at the same time. I guess I have to acknowledge the boldness of it, really.

Ah, but OP has said sitting on a bus with the window open doesn’t incapacitate anybody. So you must be imagining things. OP’s a TEACHER, don’t you know?

iLovee · 28/01/2024 22:38

Lol. Also a teacher, also take the bus to school. You are totally insane and I feel incredibly sorry for your students. There is absolutely no way that schools are still implementing a window open policy in 2024.

Please either post the risk assessment or DM me a copy. At the very least, that part of your diatribe is total shite.
