To ring the midwife on a Saturday about heartburn?

TigerJoy · 27/01/2024 16:42

I'm so frustrated. 11 weeks, I've had dreadful heartburn since the beginning.

At first I was taking lansoprazole not realising I wasn't supposed to take in pregnancy. It's been about a few weeks since I stopped and I get dreadful heartburn, regurgitation, I'm on a really limited diet because of the nausea.

I messaged the GP on Tuesday asking for omeprezole and haven't heard anything yet. I just went to the pharmacy to buy it over the counter but they wouldn't sell it to me as I'm pregnant. They told me to ring 111! Or to ring my midwife.

It's not urgent, I'm just feeling so fed up. Would IBU to ring the midwife today or 111...

YABU - leave it til Monday
YANBU - try and get sorted today

Can you ask someone to go and buy it for you?

newyearnewnothing · 27/01/2024 16:44

Honestly just get someone else to go in and buy it for you.

Mumaway · 27/01/2024 16:44

Gaviscon. Buy a giant bottle. I went through litres of the stuff. You don't need a midwife on a Saturday for heartburn.

Cheeesus · 27/01/2024 16:45

Try a different pharmacy and tell them you aren’t pregnant?

I presume you’ve tried gavsicon tablets already?

Summerrabbit · 27/01/2024 16:45

Poor you, reflux is awful. I probably wouldn’t ring the midwife or 111 over the weekend if it was me. Like others say can you get someone to get something for you over the counter? Have you tried all the usual things- Gaviscon, Rennies etc?

UpUpUpU · 27/01/2024 16:46

Just don’t tell the pharmacist you are pregnant? A midwife can’t prescribe it anyway.

Gaviscon is also your friend.

You have my sympathies.

WinterExclusive · 27/01/2024 16:47

Big bottle of gaviscon. I used to drink two a week. Also sleep propped up.

It gets worse so get the PPI sorted. Not eating a lot on one go, and never getting a completely empty stomach both help a little.

KnackeredBack · 27/01/2024 16:48

Until you're prescribed omeprazole, try peptac liquid (same as gaviscon liquid but in a bigger bottle!) before and after every meal/eating session. I have it for another condition and this is what I was advised to do. It does help.

Porridgeislife · 27/01/2024 16:52

Omeprazole is sold on the shelves in Superdrug, Boots and via Amazon Prime as Pyrocalm. I would just buy it in pregnancy and never consulted a pharmacist.

Boomer55 · 27/01/2024 16:52

Buy a packet of Rennies.

Thanks for everyone who has responded. I thought it was a ridiculous suggestion of the pharmacist and I confess I am throwing my toys out of my pram a bit due to hormones, tiredness and general fed-up-ness.

No way I can leave the house again today (thanks crippling fatigue) and DH is being difficult about going to the pharmacy for me (although tbf he's tired too) so I'll see what I can buy on Amazon Prime for now.

DH needs to get with the programme - there's going to be a lot of running round he needs to do!

Good luck, hope you feel better soon.

When he discovered we are also out of lactulose he relented, but it's too late now! Pharmacy closed. At least I'm not annoyed with him anymore lol

Rennies tablets peppermint flavour will change your life x

Caswallonthefox · 27/01/2024 17:56

I used gaviscon when I was pregnant.
Now I use rennies peppermint tablets. Anything else makes me want to throw up.

Get him to go to the supermarket where there will definitely have gaviscon. And probably lactulose if he goes to one with a pharmacy. Honestly he needs to get his act together, is he going to refuse to go when he's tired and the baby is out of nappies??

chopinwaltz26 · 27/01/2024 18:45

Modify what you are eating, as that is the cause.
Better for baby, too.

Not the case. When pregnant with Dd it didn’t matter what I ate, how much or how little, I had constant heartburn.

Pregnancy heartburn is caused by all your joints and ligaments softening and loosening up, and this includes the muscles that hold back stomach acid. Op could eat nothing at all and still have horrific heartburn.

holycrabsticks · 27/01/2024 18:54

Just go to another pharmacy and don't say you're pregnant.

TigerJoy · 27/01/2024 19:05

DH was on a train coming home from work, tired, and he's not v well at the moment too. He has turned up with osemeprazole and liquid gaviscon he bought at the station.

Yes, I am sure he will be doing nappy runs at 3am if necessary. He's super supportive, he just held me while I had a big cry about possibly only having one child. As I'm 11 weeks pregnant this is a bit premature one way or the other.

Nope, not the case. I have tried so many different foods, but generally eating v limited diet of very bland foods. In small quantities. I can assure you getting this sorted would be better for baby because then I'll be a eating a varied diet again.

Not true at all. I was on an ultra healthy gestational diabetes diet and was on omeprazole until the day I gave birth.

Livilalaland567 · 27/01/2024 19:44

Another one saying rennies if you haven't tried them already

zeddip · 27/01/2024 19:55

A midwife can't prescribe it for you or do anything really. Only GP can prescribe, if you know it's safe just ask someone else to go!
