Parking on hatch markings if not leaving car

BookieLookie · 25/01/2024 15:18

Car park by DC school is always full and it contains the delivery access to a shop. There are two sections of yellow hatch markings which are there to allow the turning circle of the delivery lorries. Parking in these hatch markings does not affect the use of the car park by cars.

my DC walks to the car park so I park on the hatch markings if the car park is full as I’m not leaving the car so if the lorry comes I can move out of its way. The layout means I would see the lorry coming and could move before it got to me.

i’ve just been ‘told off’ by another parent for parking there. I absolutely would not park and leave the car so I can’t really see the problem (the parents who do park and leave on the hatches and in the disabled spaces are another matter)

so AIBU to sit in my car on hatch markings when it doesn’t effect other cars’ use and I can move straight away if needed?

What is it with school mum’s thinking parking rules don’t apply to them?! 🤦🏼‍♀️

dawnc27 · 25/01/2024 15:21

just park further away and walk your child in

BoilingHotand50something · 25/01/2024 15:21

You know YABU. Otherwise you wouldn’t have written a long story about it to try and justify it.

BigBoysDontCry · 25/01/2024 15:22

If they are yellow you aren't supposed to stop on them, if they are white I think you can?

As long as you aren't blocking the view for DC crossing the road (doesn't sound like it) and you are ready to move if required then I don't see the issue to be honest.

What was her point?

minipie · 25/01/2024 15:23

YABU the hatch marks mean no parking. That space could be needed for all sorts - a turning space for example for others using the car park.

Also if the car park is full, and you see the lorry coming, where are you going to move to that isn’t causing a problem for someone else??

Wooloohooloo · 25/01/2024 15:25

Stop making excuses. You're not an emergency vehicle- you aren't allowed to park there.

zurala · 25/01/2024 15:28

YABU for three things:
Parking where you shouldn't
Calling them "hatch" markings when they are hatched markings
Using effect when you meant affect

Back to school for you OP! Learn your highway code https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code

The Highway Code

The Highway Code is essential reading for all road users, including pedestrians, mobility scooter users, cyclists, horse riders, drivers and motorcyclists.

Things like this have a knock on effect. More people start doing it. Then people start leaving their cars there, just fir 5 minutes. Then for assembly etc.

Frankly, school parents should have childrens safety as their upmost concern but they are the worst drivers and parkers.

catelynjane · 25/01/2024 15:29

If the car park is full, park further away and walk to meet your child. It's not difficult.

What is it with school mum’s thinking parking rules don’t apply to them?! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Because in their eyes they're only going to be...........(insert what ever reason you will)

But never in the wrong...

Normandy144 · 25/01/2024 15:36

I would park elsewhere. It doesn't matter that you're not getting out of the car. You shouldn't park or stop on the hatching. If there's no space in the car park then park further away and walk in.

NoTouch · 25/01/2024 15:42

The markings are there for a reason, their meaning is clear. They are perhaps there for more reasons than you believe.

Regardless, just follow the same highway code as everyone else does, it is not open for negotiation just because a driver is lazy.

brunettemic · 25/01/2024 15:42

Do you and your DC have fully functioning legs?
If yes -> YABU, arrogant and entitled, just park somewhere else.
If no -> pretty important info you’ve missed so you’re still BU.

TerrysOrangeScot · 25/01/2024 15:45

Hatch markings at our school are not for deliveries but to ensure the safety of the children. Sometimes markings are made after a review and shows parking in these areas can cause safety issues such as visibility issues for kids.

KirstenBlest · 25/01/2024 15:48

It's a special place in the car park marked especially for you OP. The other parent was just jealous.

Dotjones · 25/01/2024 15:49

It's a bit stupid but I think the OP is technically OK. The Highway Code says you can't enter a yellow box unless your exit is clear. It doesn't specifically say you can't stop in it - though that's bloody common sense - the rule is not entering when your exit is blocked.

An example of when it would be legitimate to stop in a yellow box would be if you entered it when the exit was clear then someone illegally barged in front of you and forced you to stop. You wouldn't be in breach of the Highway Code because your exit was clear when you entered.

EDIT: Unless you mean the zigzag things that you get by crossings and schools, if these you can't stop on them under any circumstances.

Interesting. I never park and leave on hatched markings or double yellow etc. Answers to questions: I’m 100% sure these are just for the delivery lorry. It’s in a corner of the car park so in no way impacts child safety in any way. If lorry comes in I can just drive straight out, it’s two lanes coming in and I’m facing forwards. It is already a 5 min walk from school. No I don’t have fully functioning legs, I have a hip injury but didn’t think that relevant.

No I don’t have fully functioning legs, I have a hip injury but didn’t think that relevant.

So what relevance does your last statement have to do with your DC?
You don't leave the car so your hip injury isn't relevant.

QueenBean22 · 25/01/2024 15:59

Have you applied for a blue badge?

BookieLookie · 25/01/2024 16:02

I’m not bad enough for a blue badge.

Crumpleton - exactly why I didn’t mention it, another poster asked.

But if you're not leaving the car, then you just need to park further away and your child can walk the 6-7 minutes instead of the 5 to get to you.

Wooloohooloo · 25/01/2024 19:06

You can't park there- stop making excuses. If you need to be that close, arrive sooner. The rules are clear.

GreyhpundGirl · 25/01/2024 19:21

You do understand what hatch markings mean don't you? YABU
