Are you a pilot, Sharon?

ChristySept · 24/01/2024 21:58

@flybyinalowride If you are the Sharon of t-Rex in Asda fame then I’m one of your biggest fans….

On a more serious note though, I too have spent the last few days watching flight radar and all the diversions.

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 24/01/2024 22:08

@ChristySept I thought sharon had the wasp?

Luckingfovely · 24/01/2024 22:13

Planes should always avoid shit, storms whenever possible, Asda, and any wasp larger than the average.

Cotswoldbee · 24/01/2024 22:19

Wrong thread.

flybyinalowride · 24/01/2024 22:20

Sorry for confusion. My I pad keeps sending stuff away before I finish a sentence. point is I'm a nervous flyer at the best of times. Don't get stressed about turbulence and I quite enjoy landing and take off but its always been a means to an end for me. I'm concerned that despite all the weather warnings in place for Sunday in Scotland high winds in particular , planes destined for Scotland were still allowed to take off. Many of them had several go arounds before diverting to other airports. One from Tenerife ended up in Cologne. I guess my question is …, should planes be allowed to take off if they're flying into severe weather conditions? And caveat, should passengers be informed that flying into a shitstorm with problematic landing conditions before they board the plane

Air traffic has extremely rigid guidelines about when planes can and can't fly. It's not a matter of opinion, it's tightly regulated aviation law.

In bad weather, yes, planes sometimes have to divert - but they very very very rarely fall out of the sky.

Lastly, most people are aware of the news and weather around them and capable of making their own decisions whether to fly or not.

Gently - this is your fear of flying clouding your view of the facts.

ChristySept · 24/01/2024 22:24

@flybyinalowride ive been thinking the same. We are flying in a week or two and I wouldn’t have gotten on the plane. Some people don’t have the choice though - they need to get home/work etc.

did you see that poor man who ended up in Paris trying to get to Dublin and I think they were travelling for ten plus hours.

afkonholidaynearleek · 24/01/2024 22:29

All aircraft have limits as to what winds they can fly into at their weight (fuel, passengers etc).

If weather is bad at the destination then they need at least two back up airports to divert to in their flight plan that allows them to land without experiencing a fuel emergency.

I do think that trying to land in the storms we've just had is a bit silly.

afkonholidaynearleek · 24/01/2024 22:29

The pilot always makes the final decision - they will divert if it is unsafe.

TeabySea · 24/01/2024 22:31

It all makes sense now. I thought perhaps the pilot had been listening to too much Erasure and was T-rexing at the controls, making the flight all jerky like a wasp.

I get that and have every respect for the pilots landing in an absolute gale force wind/ storm force conditions . Who's decision was it to fly the pane tho?

Happy to oblige. What's your thoughts?

A plane defies all logic, therefore it is no more illogical to take off in gale force winds then it is on a dry sunny day.
