What do you do/are you qualified to do?

Acapulco12 · 24/01/2024 12:29

I’m so sorry to hear it OP, that’s really rotten luck 🌺

What kind of sector/industry are you in?

Did you get given a redundancy package from those jobs, and would it be enough money to tide you over whilst you look for another role?

Have the companies offered things like job application/interview support as part of that package (as sometimes this is offered)?

DadJoke · 24/01/2024 12:30

You managed to get two jobs in six months! That's quite an achievement. Redundancy is not usually considered as a negative from employers under most circumstances. Has it been an issue in further job applications?

KreedKafer · 24/01/2024 12:32

Redundancy isn't the same as being fired, and prospective employers do know that.

It just means a company is reducing its head count. When you're made redundant, it means that the company has decided they don't need or can't afford the role you're fulfilling. It doesn't mean you were underperforming. Often, it just means you were one of the newest team members. An employer is aware that being made redundant is simply a matter of bad luck, not a matter of poor performance or misconduct.

I can’t really say, because of how it’s come about and anything being traced back to me, it’s a public company that wouldn’t want the reputational damage. But I’m a qualified and experienced person, sorry vague and unhelpful.

im at that stage where retraining would be futile because of seniority, im not mega high up (60k ish) but enough that starting from the bottom would be a huge set back

I’m just not getting anywhere now, and I’m wondering if it’s because I look like a job hopper

cant really say the industry. Barely anything due to length of service and no support , it’s been very badly done

Apologies for being a bit brusque.
As a PP said, redundancies are looked on somewhat differently to dismissals or job hopping.
Are there any specialist recruitment consultancies in your field? Might be worth approaching one or two. Again, they will understand about redundancies.

BIinkii · 24/01/2024 12:48

Were they mass redundancies? Or just you both times?

Forgottenandforlorn · 24/01/2024 12:50

Multiple individuals in both instances, one redundancy programme larger than the other but not just me in both instances

Already done it, it’s a tough time in my sector too, several big firms or a similar nature have let people go in recent months

I think it would depend on the industry and role, as to how it is interpreted by prospective employers. Some are more risky than others.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 24/01/2024 13:00

I was made redundant 3x on 14 months. And although I was very experienced with excellent track record, I just didn't have much luck with jobs after 3rd redundancy... some things seem to stick, even if it isn't your fault!
I looked at my transferable skills and changed sector. Best thing I have done! Got my relative job security back, had fun learning new skills and the wages are similar to what I had before all this redundancy malarkey started.

bonzaitree · 24/01/2024 13:11

I think if you make it clear in your CV that you were part of a company wide redundancy program with multiple redundancies being made on both occasions it should not negatively impact you.

OakElmAsh · 24/01/2024 13:11

Not sure of your sector, but if its Tech, I wouldn't worry, this is happeneing to a lot of people at the minute ..... its an absolute crapshoot when you start somewhere if there are going to be layoffs or not.
Hiring managers are fully aware of this!

Naptrappedmummy · 24/01/2024 13:11

There are so many ‘I’m fucked aren’t i’ threads. I clicked on this expecting anything from a very serious health diagnosis, to a poster who was facing a stretch of prison time. I would recommend changing the thread title so posters with helpful advice are more drawn to it.

mynewusername2023 · 24/01/2024 13:12

Are you stating that you were made redundant? If not, that might be why you're not having success. If you don't state the reason, it could look like you're a job hoper.

NewMinouMinou · 24/01/2024 13:14

Also, most companies will have a "last in, first out" policy so this may well have had some bearing on your second redundancy.

AnxietyLevelMax · 24/01/2024 13:20

OP just don’t mention the second redundancy in your cv or at the interview. I imagine you didnt work there too long then and couple/few months break wont look odd. U dont have to disclose it

Yellowwellies1 · 24/01/2024 13:23

I've been made redundant twice in the space of a few years. It did dent my confidence a bit, but as others have said, it's really nothing personal or anything to be ashamed of. I found work again fairly quickly both times (with a lot of rejections too!) It's such a numbers game, I'd suggest just applying for anything and everything that looks vaguely suitable.

Sallyh87 · 24/01/2024 13:25

January is a very slow time for recruitment. Things tend to pick up in March.

Redundancy isn’t generally seen as a negative.

Bluetrews25 · 24/01/2024 13:26

Redundancy really hurts, been there, done that. Flowers

Getting jobs IS more difficult now.

Keep on keeping on.
Good luck and best wishes.

dutysuite · 24/01/2024 13:29

I feel for you, my husband was made redundant during and then after the pandemic, his industry really suffered and still is, it's really tough because the types of industry he's in requires up to 6 interviews the so the whole recruitment process is a long one and now he's experiencing ageism too.

BagsaMunroe · 24/01/2024 13:40

You say you will appear a job hopper.

Redundancy isn't job hopping is it?
No one chooses to be redundant.

If the sector you work in is easily 'identifiable' (hence you don't want to say what it is) then won't any potential employers know this and understand why there were mass redundancies?

In other words- not your fault.

I agree.

To get more specific advice, you need to change your subject line to something about being made redundant, twice in succession, and looking for work.
