Sorry to hear. It doesn’t seem like it would, but being made redundant really does give you a loss of confidence even though it really shouldn’t. I’ve been made redundant twice in my time, the second time being after about 3 years after being made redundant from the first place.

I used to joke to myself that I was bad luck and every business goes bust after I join (in reality I was just a number on a desk).

Remember it’s not YOU that has been made redundant, it’s your role in that company that has been made redundant. You’ll no doubt find something, it just feels like you won’t right now, I promise you.

I can’t really say, because of how it’s come about and anything being traced back to me, it’s a public company that wouldn’t want the reputational damage. But I’m a qualified and experienced person, sorry vague and unhelpful.

im at that stage where retraining would be futile because of seniority, im not mega high up (60k ish) but enough that starting from the bottom would be a huge set back

Are you Rishi Sunak?

LittleOwl153 · 24/01/2024 13:56

2 big redundancy programmes in 6 months is going to lead to a lot of floating staff in the industry - which is going to be more of the issue I suspect.

You might need to look at your skills and consider side stepping if you can't get back I to where you were.

Are you Rishi Sunak?

LOL!!!

Perhaps a career in ballet might be on the cards if it is Rishi 😆

I think your previous employer is the one who should be embarrassed. I know I would be if I hired someone for a role that turned out not to exist six months later. But redundancy is usually a cover for some higher up fuckwit's poor decision making and forward planning.

I don't think you're fucked although I understand it feels like it. Redundancy, as people have said, is nothing to do with your performance; as before, it's usually to cover up some senior fuckwit and it usually just means you were expensive or new so you effectively had no rights to fight it. If your industry is in trouble then recruiters will know that's the reason, and you can make it clear you left the last job due to redundancy.

I'm sure you will get there. You have my sympathy, it's a horrible position to be in, but no, you aren't fucked.

NeedToChangeName · 24/01/2024 14:24

Perhaps worth highlighting to recruiters that multiple people were made redundant at the same time

You managed to get two jobs in six months! That's quite an achievement. Redundancy is not usually considered as a negative from employers under most circumstances. Has it been an issue in further job applications?

^ This.
We’ve hired some workers (the best in fact) that have made a career out of being made redundant (admittedly with pay offs, so have worked at the businesses longer).
You haven’t been sacked! Redundancy is not your fault and you’ve done nothing wrong at all.

There are so many ‘I’m fucked aren’t i’ threads. I clicked on this expecting anything from a very serious health diagnosis, to a poster who was facing a stretch of prison time. I would recommend changing the thread title so posters with helpful advice are more drawn to it.

no obviously it is no where near in the same league as a devastating health diagnosis but I do very much feel like my world is crumbling around me. I have huge nurseries costs, likely won’t get much notice it will be bam… todays your last day surprise. I’ve cast my net far and wide and even have on my cv redundancy for both roles and nothing. My mortgage just shot up and we need some income, I’ll likely get 1 week pay and that’s it. I’m a single mum in receipt of no benefits. So right now I very much do feel fucked

OP, job loss can be really devastating and so are money worries. Yes, it's true it could be worse but you are allowed to be worried and upset about this (although I really, truly don't think you're fucked) and I don't think there was anything wrong with your title either, although it's true that putting redundancy in there might draw people with more specific knowledge.

Perhaps you can start a thread in the Money section to get some advice on how to weather the storm financially until you get another position, which I'm very sure you will.

BagsaMunroe · 24/01/2024 15:21

I know this might not be the case, but were your previous jobs in an industry that was always going to contract (ie at risk of closing, downsizing, etc.)?

I am sure you have thought of this, but if you lasted 3 months in a company they must have been sailing pretty close to the wind at the time they recruited you. Obviously, there are lots of companies folding or contracting post-pandemic as people's habits have changed (eg the catering industry.)

Are your skills transferable to other types of organisations?
Or are you limited to only certain ones?

BagsaMunroe · 24/01/2024 15:23

Do your skills lend themselves to being self-employed in any way?

It might not be what you want long term, but sometimes it can be a stop-gap to earn something.

JubileeJumps · 24/01/2024 15:23

That's crap.
It's bad luck and you will get an amazing job I'm sure.
Liz Truss was useless and PM for about 15 minutes. You're miles better than her.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 24/01/2024 15:40

Hold on a second. You are far from fucked.
You are clearly employable and succeed at interviews.

You were also part of mass redundancy programmes outside of your control and it's unsurprising that you were included given you were only in the door.

At interview you can talk about how you wish to be part of a team where there is longevity, opportunities to progress over time. How you would love to get stuck into a roll as you were really only getting started in the other rolls. How much you lived working there and disappointed that there was no warning signs before accepting the role etc.

I’m not doubting that (and best of luck to you) I’m suggesting you would have more success on here without such a vague thread title. This exact title crops up at least a few times a week and it’s rather pointless because it won’t attract the right responses.
