To ring 111 or is it ridiculous?

34 weeks pregnant and feeling completely fine until about half an hour ago when I was watching TV and my eye slight suddenly went really funny. All I can explain it as is a coloured flashing zigzag in my left eye. I've no other symptoms except this. I wear glasses anyway, but my eyesight really doesn't feel right. Kind of like double vision but not extreme.

I don't know how to explain it other than that.

Am I being ridiculous? Is this just a type of migraine?

Visual disturbances can be a symptom of preeclampsia, so it's best to get checked out. Call 111.

TuxedoChimp · 22/01/2024 21:01

This sound like a migraine aura. They usually pass within 30 mins or so.

TheWonderhorse · 22/01/2024 21:01

Ring 111. You need a blood pressure check I think.

handmademitlove · 22/01/2024 21:02

Call - it can be a sign of pre-eclampsia...

Got2getout · 22/01/2024 21:02

Get checked just in case.

plugin12 · 22/01/2024 21:02

Do you not have the triage number to call? There is normally a number available 24/7, should be on your notes

Merryoldgoat · 22/01/2024 21:03

I get migraines like this - the zig zags and wavy lines are an aura.

However being pregnant means I’d call the triage line as it could be the start of blood pressure problems.

Do you have a home BP monitor?

LittleMG · 22/01/2024 21:03

Sounds like migraine but also can be a symptom of preeclampsia. I would definitely get checked out the stakes are too
high. I’d ring the maternity ward not 111 and get them to get u in and monitor. Are your feet swollen at all?

Amba1998 · 22/01/2024 21:04

Don’t bother with 111

call your mat ward triage number

SnowSnow · 22/01/2024 21:04

Absolutely call. This is a red flag for pre eclampsia. Hopefully all ok but please do call maternity assessment ward

mynameiscalypso · 22/01/2024 21:05

I agree it sounds like a migraine but I'd absolutely be getting it checked out if I was heavily pregnant especially if you've never had them before

WolfFoxHare · 22/01/2024 21:07

It does sound like migraine aura but visual disturbances can be a sign of pre eclampsia. I have migraine aura without headache, I had a couple of these in quick succession when pregnant and it turned out I had developed high blood pressure - I was then monitored very carefully and did eventually develop pre-eclampsia. Call your midwife unit, they’ll want you to come in.

beigelamp · 22/01/2024 21:11

The aura has gone now but I've now got a terrible headache

Toddlerteaplease · 22/01/2024 21:14

Contact Maternity triage now!

Rosiiee · 22/01/2024 21:14

Can you not show up at your maternity hospital for a bp check? Or go into a pharmacy tomorrow for a check. I wouldn’t leave it too long.

Starsnspikes · 22/01/2024 21:17

The fact the aura disappeared and a headache came on makes it seem very likely to be a migraine BUT at your stage of pregnancy, if you've never had a migraine before, I'd 100% be getting that checked. Agree with others to ring the maternity assessment unit rather than 111, I imagine they'd get you straight in.

RadioGaGaRadioGooGoo · 22/01/2024 21:17

Maternity assessment unit asap - you need your blood pressure and urine checked

Thelnebriati · 22/01/2024 21:17

If you had an aura and now have a terrible headache, go straight to the maternity ward. Good luck.

Caerulea · 22/01/2024 21:22

Migraine aura. I got it the first time when pregnant myself, the middle of my vision disappeared, looked at my cat & could only see half of her.

When I tell you I shit myself!! Had no idea what was happening.

Google migraine aura & you'll see the rainbow zigzags, it starts in the middle (usually one eye) then moves to the outer edge & disappears. Looks like light thru cut glass crystal.

I've occasionally still get them if I'm really run down. No headache, just an overwhelming urge to sleep. No high blood pressure.

Always worth checking it out though! Ring midwife/maternity centre & they'll check you over.

blackpanth · 22/01/2024 21:23

Get checked

Rubyupbeat · 22/01/2024 21:23

Please just go and get checked, it could be anything.

duckpancakes · 22/01/2024 21:24

Amba1998 · 22/01/2024 21:04

Don’t bother with 111

call your mat ward triage number

This. Presumably they have you a number to call if you feel you need to be seen. So call it or get to the unit whatever they told you to do. Don't mess around waiting and asking people online if you need to be seen just get seen.

beigelamp · 22/01/2024 21:24

My mum also suffers from migraine auras, has done for years. I've never experienced it before, it was the strangest thing. I feel fine and the headache isn't severe, probably nothing a paracetamol won't sort.

I've had a midwife appointment today actually and my BP was fine and there were no concerns whatsoever. I have had no other symptoms and felt okay all day, it completely came out of nowhere!

Just go and get seen. Stop talking yourself out of it.

Migraines are hereditary so the fact your mum suffers too does fit, it could be that pregnancy has triggered your first one.

The advice for migraines that start in adulthood is to get checked by a GP though, just to be sure. In your situation I'd still say ring MAC for advice, they'll tell you whether they think you need to be seen. Nothing to be lost from making that call! Good news that your BP was normal earlier though.
