To ask if you feel safe as a woman to walk outside alone after dark

I've been stuck indoors sick for a few days where I've been ill. I'm quite over weight and feel as though I need to go for a walk. I feel like I need to walk off the first meal I've had for a few days, as I feel quite uncomfortable. But I can't. Because I'm a woman and I don't feel safe enough to go out walking alone after dark. It's a shame that I don't feel safe enough to go out and get fresh air and exercise as a woman. Am I overly anxious, or is it just sensible to not go out alone at night? How do other women feel about this?

Thanks

No. But I live near the centre of a small town with a low crime rate.

Comedycook · 22/01/2024 19:11

I mean after dark can mean many things. It's dark at 4pm in the depths of winter. I would go out though. I wouldn't walk alone at 3am though unless it was a very busy place. Really depends on the area and the time I think.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 22/01/2024 19:11

Where I live, yes. But that's not to say I am actually safe!

Numbersarefun · 22/01/2024 19:12

I feel quite safe.

catelynjane · 22/01/2024 19:12

It doesn't bother me.

Do you really not go anywhere alone in winter after 4pm?

Same as this. It depends where you live. I live in small town no where, nothing ever happens there. I've never once even felt slightly uncomfortable. I've been travelling all day so am considering going out when I get home in half an hour to stretch my legs. Rain is my concern not safety.

Drosera · 22/01/2024 19:12

Unless it was a dodgy area then I'd probs not worry. Vast majority of stranger violence is man on man.

Shodan · 22/01/2024 19:13

Around the streets in my small town, yes. Not around the lake or down by the river though. And there are a couple of alleyways I'd avoid.

CharlotteBog · 22/01/2024 19:13

Where do live OP?
I feel safe where I live and frequently go out alone when it's dark.

Shadowsindarkplaces · 22/01/2024 19:13

I have a large dog, I can walk anywhere at anytime. Would I if I didn't have her? I'd be more choosy on route taken.

0rangeCrush · 22/01/2024 19:13

If I didn’t walk outside when it’s dark; I wouldn’t be able to go to or from work for half the year.

I am not scared when in familiar places; the last time I remember being scared was when walking through brownfield inner city areas when I didn’t know where I was going.

Midnlghtrain · 22/01/2024 19:14

I feel safe, both in the local town and more rural walks.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/01/2024 19:14

Not anymore.

RedToothBrush · 22/01/2024 19:14

I happily walk around on my own as a matter of principle.

I refuse to be a prisoner after dark.

Evaka · 22/01/2024 19:14

I can only speak for myself but feel completely safe at all hours in all parts of London. Been here 12 years and have had one or two uncomfortable encounters with creepy men but nothing that would deter me from doing whatever the fuck I want at any hour.

Snowpaw · 22/01/2024 19:14

I go out walking most nights around 7pm. Wouldn't occur to me not to.

Trisolaris · 22/01/2024 19:14

I work in London so often don’t get home til past 7 or later if I have a work event. It would cost me a fortune if I refused to walk to and from the train station on either end.

PicklesAndTequila · 22/01/2024 19:15

I do go out after dark, but I'm very aware of my surroundings

DillDanding · 22/01/2024 19:15

Yes, I wouldn’t think twice. We live very rurally and the only issue is it’s as black as pitch at night and you can’t really see where you’re walking.

I guess it depends on where you live.

bobomomo · 22/01/2024 19:16

I've always gone out alone, never second guess it. I've lived in cities, towns and villages, no different

SouthEastCoast · 22/01/2024 19:18

Yes. I have always done it. There are times I’ve felt unsafe of course but I don’t think k I should limit my life because of others

Michiamo · 22/01/2024 19:18

I live in London and work evenings.
I never walk home on my own from work (11:30pm ish) as it’s deserted where my station is (industrial estate).
If the station was on the high road I’d be fine with it.

chocopop123 · 22/01/2024 19:19

I live in a city and usually feel safe if it's a residential place or a busy place. I wouldn't want to walk through the park late at night, or anywhere remote.

HereWeGoRoundAgain · 22/01/2024 19:19

I feel safe in my town yes.

Fionaville · 22/01/2024 19:19

I feel vulnerable, but not necessarily scared. More hyper aware. I wouldn't let a fear of men stop me.
