BBC cut Sue Barker etc from a question of sport.
Nobody watched so they axed it.
They have now axed the man who used to present Homes under the Hammer in the mornings and replaced him with Owain the weatherman.
They made loads of cuts to local radio. They axed peoples favourite presenters and upset them all. They failed to understand local radio and it's listeners. They didn't do any consultations before they cut presenters and shows etc.
It's supposed to be our BBC isn't it?

Well maybe if they were held accountable , there wouldn’t be as many “we’re sorry about what’s happened, we have learnt from our mistakes “,

serious question how long does it take to get rid of doctors or nurses, who are completely incompetent at their jobs? I know of at least one nurse who did something really wrong and who’s now a matron on an elderly care ward in a major hospital, she wasn’t punished just shunted from one hospital to another

BoohooWoohoo · 22/01/2024 18:19

If there were consultations on hiring and firing at the BBC then it would be unnecessarily costly and influenced by people on the internet campaigning for their favourite programmes and presenters. You would end up with programmes that are very samey because they are popular.

NannyGythaOgg · 22/01/2024 18:38

Not listened to Radio II during the week since they got rid of Ken Bruce (Still miss Terry Wogan but they couldn't help that).
Never watched QoS after Sue was sacked
And I can't fucking stand
Can't stand Owain or that pratt Ritchie Anderson.

Constantly reducing the possibilities of me continuing to pay my license. I couldn't even watch House of Games last week because of the screeching. Luckily this week has better guests

YANBU, I used to listen to Radio 2 but they’ve decimated that too. Luckily Greatest Hits Radio has made an excellent replacement. (With premium to avoid the adverts)

2X4B523P · 22/01/2024 18:42

@NannyGythaOgg

You can find Ken on Greatest Hits Radio Monday to Friday 1000 to 1300. Also Simon Mayo 1600 to 1900.

Most people I know don't pay the bbc tv licence and sometimes I feel we are the only ones that do. I like live tv, I player and no adverts etc.
I can imagine that this has had a big impact on their revenue, plus they need to pay the big bucks to their more popular presenters , so lots must go on wages ?
Other than that I've no idea, but I can see a time when the bbc will be similar to Netflix and won't exist in its present form

They had/ have to make huge cuts, due to their budget being slashed - hence the cuts to radio, and much else.

Toadying up to the government for 14 years not working for them then.

Pretty sure Sue Barker retired.

Not from QOS she didn't.

Not due a freshen up. If it isn't broken, don't try and fix it. Disaster.

I have been watching A question of sport ( or Question of sport as I became ) over half a century, it has changed numerous times over the years, a few different presenters and numerous team captains.

I can even remember when it was nearly all about sport.

I loved it with Sue Phil and Matt but it couldn't stay that way forever.

All TV shows need a bit of a tune up now and then.

Too much change too quickly.

Not true, there was enough money for local radio, they mismanaged it.

Hopefully they will be answerable to Ofcom.

I don’t mind Owain … but he’s a bit “flavour of the month”, not sure why he would be on HUTH, they have quite enough presenters as it is.

ohtowinthelottery · 22/01/2024 19:23

I used to love our local BBC radio station but not anymore. After 2pm it's no longer local - it's regional. I don't want to hear about things happening 100 miles away somewhere I never go - I want to hear about things happening in the county I live in.
The mispronunciation of place names by reporters/presenters who have no knowledge of our area is really annoying too.

There was nothing wrong with qos, it was when they changed it, it all went wrong. As said if something not broken, don't play around.
Same with local radio.Theyve butchered it, there's been many mistakes on air as well, like silence and people cutting out. They didn't even thank local presenters for the work they'd done for the station.
They made the presenters all reapply for their own jobs as well. It was Callous.

Haven’t watched homes under the hammer for years but it was a maternity leave staple. The music tracks that were played to reflect the type of house was always amusing. I’m actually concerned to read that they’ve ditched a presenter that has cancer.

Exactly this. There is no local radio after 2pm now and none at the weekends.
Hopefully Ofcom will investigate, there's been so many complaints.

Their funding has been repeatedly slashed every year for years. They’ve got an impossible brief on the one hand to provide an educational public service, and on the other to produce what people want to watch. They get criticised for spending too much on talent, but if they didn’t they’d be criticised for not having enough star quality.

I think it’s immeasurably important to have a high quality, impartial national broadcast/media company. The BBC does a huge amount for the country in terms of soft power. I’d never support dismantling it or making it commercial. But, having said that, it has major issues and really needs to change. I don’t know how, but too much has gone wrong in recent decades to ignore.

JewelleryCat · 22/01/2024 19:43

I liked Tommy Walsh on HUTH, seemed very knowledgeable

Yes, they already have Martin, Martel and Dion, who work well together, so why do they need anybody else?

It's not like they all go to the same property together, anyway - although they do tend to send Martel to the old houses with very low ceilings rather than Dion Grin

I too like the deliberately silly use of snippets of 'appropriate' songs - it's become an in-joke. And Martin's invisible piano that he plays all the time Grin

TiaSeeya · 22/01/2024 20:04

I watch very little BBC now it’s run by the Tories. The Kuenssberg programme is unbelievably biased.

What they have done to Chris Packham and co is appalling. Scrapping Autumnwatch and throwing £2.50 at 4 days of Winterwatch with Iolo in fucking Dorset is a national disgrace.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 22/01/2024 20:05

Are we sure that Tommy has been 'axed' per se? Might it just be that his contract came to an end and hasn't been renewed?

I agree about Ken Bruce - that was outrageous of the BBC, keeping him hanging on and not discussing his contract renewal in good time. Maybe they were wanting to slash his pay and hoped to call his bluff, but they didn't reckon on how canny he was. He even made sure that he owned the rights to Pop Master, so he wouldn't have to leave that behind with them!

LlynTegid · 22/01/2024 20:15

The Tories would be happier if there was no BBC, and would get rid of it were it not for the love there is for parts of it.

Local radio even with the limitations it has is in my opinion more important as very few places have a local daily paper. Commercial local radio is just another version of Radio 2 of sorts, often not local at all.

LlynTegid · 22/01/2024 20:16

The BBC does not help its cause by keeping Steve Wright on. And the three word best argument in favour of licence fee abolition, Mrs Browns Boys.

soupfiend · 22/01/2024 20:18

I wasnt keen on Sue Barker as a presenter although never watched the show

Love Martin on Homes under the Hammer

IMustDoMoreExercise · 22/01/2024 20:23

Really wish they would get rid of Gary linneaker.

I'm so glad they got rid of Jonathan Ross.

Also, I wish they would get rid of Naga manchetti. I stopped watching BBC breakfast because I can't stand her.

11NigelTufnel · 22/01/2024 21:44

Homes under the hammer got me through two maternity leaves, great memories. At least it's not Dion being axed, I always liked him. I haven't seen it recently enough to even know Tommy Walsh was in it. I'd still love to go to a house auction one day thanks to that show.

Also, never enjoyed Ken Bruce's pop masters quiz, what on earth is the popularity for that about? Love the BBC, but it will be increasingly tough for them I think. Or maybe people will return now all the streaming services are upping the price and adding adverts.
