Dumped Neighbour's Waste At Their Front Door

headshots · 22/01/2024 13:44

I've been unlucky with the kinds of neighbours life has given me.
A month ago, neighbour a few doors away came to take my bin from my front garden, placed it in theirs and filled it with their waste.
I went to pick up my bin from theirs and emptied their waste back into their own bin. I knocked on their door and asked politely that they stopped taking my bin (this was the second time) as that leaves me with no where to put my own waste. I made my point and walked away.
To my surprise, my neighbour has done this again today, making it the third time.
They filled my bin to the brim while theirs remained empty. They seem to be producing a higher level of waste as a family and think they have a right to take my bin. What they do is fill mine up first before considering filling theirs.
This time, I emptied their bin bags right in front of their door and took my bin away.
AIBU?
What else could I do to make my neighbours stop disregarding my boundaries. They skip their next door neighbours but come to my bin perhaps because I live alone, look familiar and can be disregarded?

Good for you! Can you get a lid lock? Chain it to your property somehow?

LakieLady · 22/01/2024 13:48

YANBU, OP.

Your neighbour is a cheeky fucker!

curlysue1991 · 22/01/2024 13:48

That is crazy and just so bizarre, maybe consider getting a lock for your bin? Is there anyway you can put the bin somewhere else? We have to put our bin out our back yard for this very reason, have to drag the bin through the house every week to get collected out front, the joys of having 'unique' neighbours, I feel your pain and sympathise with you 😞

Sawitch · 22/01/2024 13:48

There are bin locks for all types of bin on Amazon. That would stop your rather antisocial neighbours!

MeMyBooksAndMyCats · 22/01/2024 13:50

Can you take your bin into your back garden? Put a lock on it?

That's really weird, they can just pay the council for a extra bin!

9outof10cats · 22/01/2024 13:53

Good grief, what kind of person would do this?
What did they say the first time you asked them not to?

Hiddenvoice · 22/01/2024 13:55

I used to live in a block of flats where each flat had their own bin. People would fill mine the day before collection so we put a lock on it and clearly painted the door number on it.
Id suggest a lock and if possible move it out of sight

Yes I'd like to know too. What was their response ?

BashfulClam · 22/01/2024 13:58

Gravity lock and I’d be tempted to booby trap it!

FUBAR77 · 22/01/2024 13:59

CFuckery of the highest order.

  1. get a bin lock
  2. ring doorbell if funds allow
  3. keep MN updated as you know we live for these CF’s getting their comeuppance

SClubParty · 22/01/2024 14:01

I did this with neighbours. They were a house share of early twenties lads. Filling our recycling bin with their cheap beer cans. I don’t even drink 🤬

After knocking and asking politely if they could stop doing it, they kept doing it so I dumped the cans on their doorstep, rang the bell and ran away 😂 I was a bit scared tbh, but they never did it again.

LakeTiticaca · 22/01/2024 14:18

Do you have your number painted on it? Definitely get a bin lock and if possible could you chain and padlock it to a drainpipe or something? That would stop them

ActDottie · 22/01/2024 14:54

Good for you OP! They are so entitled doing this. Is there anywhere you can store your bin where they won’t be able to get to it like back garden? Or garage? It’s wrong you have to but they just don’t seem to get the message.

headshots · 22/01/2024 15:08

Thank you all.
I've been feeling awful for dumping their waste, but everyone seems to agree my neighbours are taking the piss.
I didn't realise one can get a bin lock. I'll order on Amazon now, but will take the bin into the back garden for now. I have a massive printed sign on my bin which spells out my address - I had it made by a printing company online. So, my neighbours know this is not their bin.
I will need to get a chain as what my neighbours do is that they hold my bin captive until it is full. When bin men empty bins on collection day, they tend to not return my bin close to my house. As I am mostly away (read to the end for context), my neighbours then get to my bin before me, hide it away for use for sometimes weeks. There are a few houses between us but this particular family comes all the way, skips all the local English households and come to my front garden to get my bin.
I only happen to find my bin next to their house this morning because it's gotten full and they've brought it out for collection. The last time they did this, I had to open the bin and use the address on some of the waste to trace it back to them. It was then that I went to find their own bin and empty mine into theirs and then knock on their door for a pep talk.
When I told them to kindly not use my bin anymore, they did not say a word. They looked at me as though I'm unreasonable crazy. There are a group of neighbours who belong to the same community (which I am also originally from) and get together to agree that I am crazy (one of them has called me this to my face) when in fact I just want boundaries and feel that because I am slightly different, they can't stand me and find little ways to disrespect me.
So, for context, things with my neighbours (5 families) around me got so fraught that I became mentally impacted and left to go rent outside and only come to my house once a fortnight to stay for a few days (it is when I come that I often find my bin has disappeared or been in use). They just made things so unbearable for me - noise, not allowing me to park (they said a renter like me shouldn't be able to park because they'd worked hard to buy their homes - when I made them know that I own my house too, they didn't have a comeback), verbal abuse, threat to vandalise my car etc.
So, now my property has been empty for so long. I've been unable to find a lodger because they keep telling people I find that I am crazy and they need to leave before they see the true me (a previous lodger told me this). Also, when I had lodgers previously, they'd befriend them and then encourage them to turn on me by doing things such as not paying rent, or not allowing me into my property etc.
This is my home that I bought through hard work. 3 of 5 of these neighbours are renters. I do not know how long I'd have to look forward to for them to move away. They are families. I am a single young person. I don't know why they detest me.

oh dear God. this sounds awful. is selling the house an option?

I assume you have tried the usual council complaints route?

sounds like the bin issue is the least of your troubles

readingmakesmehappy · 22/01/2024 15:22

If some of these neighbours are renters, I would suggest:

  • keep a diary of every single interaction (if you can piece together retrospectively from emails/texts etc, worth doing)
  • find out who their landlords are and get contact details
  • share the diary with their landlords and every single time they treat you like shit get in touch
twnety · 22/01/2024 15:35

I'd sell up and move

Life is too short for this kind of daily shit - where you cannot even live in your own fucking house

headshots · 22/01/2024 15:38

I'm considering selling. The house just hasn't sold.
I haven't complained to the council. I doubt the council cares.
The council planted trees in my street. One of my neighbours uprooted the tree in front of my house and replanted it in their garden. I reported to the council. It's been two years and nothing was ever done. The tree is still growing in their garden while I have no tree in front of my house. When I went over the ask why they'd removed 'my' tree, they said it's because it'd become a nuisance in a few years obstructing day light and nesting insects...

Good idea. Thanks for the advice. I'll keep a log of events. I'm being careful to avoid another mental breakdown.

Good advice here about bin locks and hiding the bin away. Personally I'd also put up CCTV and gate locks as well. I hope you manage to sell soon, hell is bad neighbours.

Ee872100 · 22/01/2024 15:49

I've had this with neighbors before, its very annoying. I second getting a bin lock and storing the bin in a back garden or getting a lock and chain, so it can't be taken away. Also, I'd report it to the council. It's illegal and classed as fly tipping, they can issue a fine. I'd also mention the harassment to them. Getting the authorities involved may deter them from their bullying behavior

Can you look into the possibility of selling your house to the local council?
Or, consider letting your property to the council so it is rented out to local people who are looking for a home and who have approached the local council for assistance. If you insist on the rent being paid directly to you (if they are in receipt of benefits) then you are guaranteed rent.

Plus wouldn't the council then be your tenants official 'landlord' or contact? (So they wwill technically have to be involved in any resolution with neighbour disputes.)

Sorry you are going through this.

DidntReallyMeanIt · 22/01/2024 16:23

Your bin stealing neighbour and all the others sound horrible.

But you shouldn't have emptied the rubbish out of the bin bags onto their doorstep, as it's windy so the flying rubbish is going to affect everyone and if you've been caught on anyone's doorbell cam, you could receive a fine.

purpleme12 · 22/01/2024 16:28

It it's this bad you need to get CCTV with sound and start reporting to the police

mathanxiety · 22/01/2024 16:44

Get a ring doorbell to record anyone touching your bin when it's out front.
Get a lock for your bin.
Bring the bin to the back garden.
Keep a log for your own MH.

Don't go to the Council to make an official complaint. That might affect your house sale.

Plan on selling.
