Bloody frozen spinach!

scorpiogirly · 21/01/2024 16:33

I made a creamy bacon and mushroom pasta a few weeks ago which tastes weirdly of fish. I thought it must have been the bacon, and that it was off or something so I slung it.

Today, whilst cooking a roast, I thought I would use up leftover leeks and potatoes to make a soup. I put some frozen spinach in it and straight away the smell of fish hit me. Mystery solved, it wasn't the bacon, but the bloody spinach.

Has anyone ever experienced this? It's the frozen cube spinach and is still in date etc.

Never store it next to frozen fish

DancefloorAcrobatics · 21/01/2024 16:36

I had this with frozen broccoli ... never understood why and now staying well clear of the suff.

andHelenknowsimmiserablenow · 21/01/2024 16:37

Yes! I found the same. Totally ruined my omelette. I do have frozen fish in my freezer as well, but how could the fish smell affect the spinach when both are frozen?

scorpiogirly · 21/01/2024 16:40

I always keep the fish in the bottom drawer. I've had it before and haven't had this problem as far as I can remember. I'm glad it's not just me. I thought I was going mad.

I use frozen spinach regularly and have never come across this. Maybe you just had a rogue pack?

DancefloorAcrobatics · 21/01/2024 16:41

PS hoping for some answers as Dr Google is very fishy on the subject.

ThinWomansBrain · 21/01/2024 16:43

Do you keep the packs well sealed in the freezer?

Marmite27 · 21/01/2024 16:45

I find if I leave fresh spinach in the fridge too long it smells like a pond Envy

why do they sell such huge bags?

Because when you cook it, one of those bags is barely enough as a side for one person who isn't very hungry and doesn't like vegetables much.

I used to use frozen cubes of spinach all the time in soups, stir fries etc until one day I put some in a stir fry and wondered why there was what I thought were tiny bits of elastic bands. I thought it was where that perhaps the spinach had been clumped together and tied with small elastic bands or something and the bands had partially disintegrated or something. Until they defrosted a bit and then I noticed they were little worms or weevils. Obviously dead but it took me years to be able to use frozen spinach again.

Broop · 21/01/2024 17:12

Im not a fish eater so I definitely don’t have any in the freezer, but I’ve also noticed frozen spinach can have a fishy taste/smell to it 😐

I always wonder why they sell such small bags. Once you steam it, it disappears to nothing.

I remember a vegan friend, years ago, sniffing tomatoes because he could tell if they'd used fish bones fertiliser. Maybe something like that? Mind you, we've had fishy smelling coffee if the cafetière hasn't been cleaned properly. So maybe fish smell is a thing when things are slightly off?

Noooo. I'm itching all over reading that. I was going to buy another bag to try but I think I'll skip it and get fresh from now on!

I used tinned spinach for dahl, but they're absolutely massive so I portion and freeze the extra. Never noticed anything fishy going on.

Snowpatrolling · 21/01/2024 17:31

I have had this before! Was grim!
I now defrost a block before using it just in case!!

BatteryPowerGnat · 21/01/2024 17:32

The only frozen veg I buy - peas and soya beans. All other veg goes watery and horrible. No wonder kids don't like veg if they are given frozen cabbage, sprouts, broccoli and not the fresh versions. I know it saves waste but I'd rather not bother.

NewName24 · 21/01/2024 17:53

I use frozen spinach blocks all the time and have never had any fish smells.
Don't think it is a 'thing', more some sort of rogue bag.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 21/01/2024 17:58

@BatteryPowerGnat I usually use frozen veg for stews, casseroles, soups and the odd veggie bake. It's absolutely fine. And quite cheap

But it's a big NO as a simple side with meat. Fresh all the way!

A 250g bag is only three serves!

BobbyBiscuits · 21/01/2024 18:06

I have never experienced that before. I always think frozen spinach is great but now I don't want to get it anymore, haha. I only ever keep fish in the freezer for about a week, I find after that it stinks and doesn't taste right when cooked.

Frozen veg is nutritionally more beneficial than fresh - unless the dress has just been picked from your own garden!
I use frozen peas, sweetcorn, broccoli, spinach, carrots. When I cook them they’re delicious!

pictoosh · 21/01/2024 18:10

I think frozen veg is really watery and soft.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/01/2024 18:14

I use frozen spinach all the time and I've never had a problem with the taste or smell.

I’ve never used frozen spinach since the time I made a spinach quiche, (using half a bag) and then found a cockroach head in the remainder, 😱
