Help with newborn

Sorry for posting it here. Need to make sure it gets seen. Not sure if my 4 week old has reflux or not. She brings up milk up after some feeds not all. She doesn't always bring wind up but is getting better. After her feed today I don't know if she over fed because she stayed on the boob for ages and had 2 let downs. So had quite a bit of milk. She literally brought it all back up. And kept on bringing it back up. It might not have been the whole feed but certainly looked like it. I've looked at the symptoms of reflux and she doesn't really have any of them apart from bringing milk back up

Any help will be much appreciated.

Ring 111.

Alwaystired2023 · 21/01/2024 13:37

Do you think she's fed at all? She's super tiny can you call the midwives or hospital where you gave birth for some advice? Don't panic mama these are the mad weeks but if you are worried best to maybe try and get checked out

OrangeSlices998 · 21/01/2024 13:40

It can look like babies are vomiting an entire feed, but if you measured out 60/90/120ml you’d see how typically it’s less than we think.

It’s really common for them to feed lots for comfort, soothe pain etc and then they’re topped out and it has to go somewhere! I’d look at feeding in more upright positions, and keep an eye on any other symptoms.

If her weight gain has been as expected and she’s having normal nappies and is otherwise well I’d just write it off as taking on lots of milk. If she continues to vomit, seems sleepy or lethargic, or you have concerns I’d get her seen. However for the moment I’d just observe.

s4usagefingers · 21/01/2024 13:40

Speak to health visitor or midwife if you’re still under them. It does sound like reflux, my son has it and it’s now managed with gaviscon. If baby’s weight is fine and also a happy baby then you might not need to medicate but you will need a professional to assess.

Hankunamatata · 21/01/2024 13:42

Mine were comfortable suckers who would stay on until they threw up and went back for more. I had to introduce a dummy

WooWooWinnie · 21/01/2024 13:42

What’s her weight like? Some babies can be quite sicky, and if they’ve fed a bit too
much, the surplus just comes back out. I’d try and speak to your HV next week, but I wouldn’t worry too much if she’s weeing and pooing as normal and her weight has been ok.

Marblessolveeverything · 21/01/2024 13:44

Is she having wet nappies that is an important indication of her getting/keeping enough milk.

I would link in with midwife/Hv for a check on her weight. After that I would look into a few different methods of getting her wind up, that is very important of they have reflux because the retained gas can interrupt their feed, or so a HV told me.

blackpanth · 21/01/2024 16:47

Her last feeds she hasn't brought any milk back up. Kept her sat up.

Reflux typically causes screaming. This sounds like normal posseting with a random bigger vomit, possibly caused by positioning?

I also used a dummy to prevent endless sucking and it definitely helped with colic as the sucking was passive and let them relax.

If you have regular wet and dirty nappies and can feel your breast draining you baby sounds fine. Obviously if you are worried get help.

Newborns are such a worry 😊

She definitely doesn't scream. Plenty of wet and dirty nappies. Yes they are 😊

She's having plenty of wet nappies.

She's a good weight. Back to her birth weight well will be more now. I think she does overfeed sometimes. She's definitely weeing and pooing okay

She doesn't have any other symptoms and never cries in pain. She does over feed on some feeds and not sicky every time. I'll see how she goes.

Normal in my experience with my two. If no signs of distress I wouldn't worry. It's annoying though - muslins on hand at all times and lots of changes of clothes and laundry! It stops after a few months I seem to remember (though my first then became a constant dribbler so still had constant outfit changes, he lived in bandana bibs (my second is 8 weeks so still to see if I need to bulk buy bibs again!)).

It hasn't happened again. If she brings any up it's only a small amount and not every feed. Her weight gain has been great. She did lose some in the beginning but no issue now. Yeah definitely going to observe atm plenty of wet and dirty nappies etc

She's definitely feeding okay. Putting weight on. Plenty of wet and dirty nappies. I'm going to observe for now. It hasn't happened again and she's not sicky with every feed. Trying not to panic haha. Newborns like to worry us.

Ring 111.

I don't think I need to ring 111 yet. She's having plenty of wet and dirty nappies. Going to observe for now.

I always thought loads of milk was coming back up until we had a proper stomach emptying vomit, then I never worried again!

Plenty of wet and dirty nappies, decent weight gain and happy baby wouldn't worry me but always best to check when they're so tiny

Definitely no signs of distress thank fully. And she's not sicky after every feed. Yes I've had to change her a few times.

Yeah it's probably not as much as it looks. Weight gain is fine and plenty of wet and dirty nappies

My first would always cluster feed on an evening for ages then cover me in it, without fail! I can’t remember how long it went on for though, sorry! X

blackpanth · 22/01/2024 19:17

She's took to a dummy so going to see if it does help, if it does she can keep it!
