Help with newborn

Sorry for posting it here. Need to make sure it gets seen. Not sure if my 4 week old has reflux or not. She brings up milk up after some feeds not all. She doesn't always bring wind up but is getting better. After her feed today I don't know if she over fed because she stayed on the boob for ages and had 2 let downs. So had quite a bit of milk. She literally brought it all back up. And kept on bringing it back up. It might not have been the whole feed but certainly looked like it. I've looked at the symptoms of reflux and she doesn't really have any of them apart from bringing milk back up

Any help will be much appreciated.

My first would always cluster feed on an evening for ages then cover me in it, without fail! I can’t remember how long it went on for though, sorry! X

She hasn't been that sicky today thank fully! X

Great to read that she’s taken to the dummy. I was determined never to use one - until the HV persuaded me. Great advice.

Some just suck for comfort and over feed. Definitely the case with bottle fed babies and it sounds like it can happen with ones on the breast as well.

I know same here. The urge to take it off her is insane 😆 but if it stops the overfeeding and settles her then I'm happy!

This just sounds like normal possetting, nothing to worry about. Babies just have very underdeveloped digestive systems. If she’s not in distress, is having plenty of wet and dirty nappies and putting on weight, don’t worry about it. It’s a laundry problem not a medical one. My DS threw up constantly for about 5 months. Just have a lot of muslins around.

Comfort sucking is also totally normal, baby knows what they need and it’s often just being at the breast. You can’t overfeed a breastfed baby, if they’ve had enough they’ll stop. You don’t need a dummy, they’re just replacement boobs.

BuffaloCauliflower · 22/01/2024 19:38

@Maray1967 no, babies breastfed from the breast (not pumped milk in a bottle) cannot overfeed. They regulate themselves just fine, and they need to feed a lot anyway.

BuffaloCauliflower · 22/01/2024 19:41

Dummies can also interfere with normal breastfeeding behaviour and make you miss cues. It’s ok to just feed and feed, most 4 week olds will feed all day if they can. Just get snacks and lean into it.

I'm just going to see how she goes with it tonight. She does seem more settled with it.

My second was like this, I used to take him to the kitchen (hard floor) & hold him high on my shoulder & try to bend back slightly as he upchucked to avoid getting covered 😂 works well until the splash gets your trousers...

He's a strapping teen now.

So long as nappies are ok & baby isn't distressed it's just a washing problem. (& crazy as it sounds it's worth spilling a small glass of (cow's!) milk on the floor so you can see how it looks like so much more liquid than it is!)

Personally I would be wary of a dummy prior to 6 weeks to ensure supply is well established (& allow baby to prime you for growth spurts).

Hang in there & keep sniffing the top of baby's head💐

She's still letting me know she's hungry

My eldest had acid reflux (dairy and soya allergy it turns out). She was the baby from hell. Didn't sleep for an hour together for days at a time and just screamed and screamed and screamed. She had a breath holding attack at 8 weeks because she screamed so much because she was in so much pain, it was really scary. And the vomit was honestly like something from the exorcist. I got properly sprayed from head to toe on several occasions, it just went everywhere. And it properly stank, really nasty acidic smell.

Not trying to compete, just thought having the information for comparison might be helpful. If your baby is not distressed and is gaining wait then it's probably okay. It's just so infuriating when you're trying so hard with the breastfeeding and then it gets wasted. Keeping her upright is a good idea. Do talk to your HV about it. You've got a newborn, you're allowed to worry. They're so small and fragile and so very precious. Congratulations on your baby. It's exhausting but so totally worth it!

Haha oh dear! 🤣🤣 aw good.
Yeah everything is good. So not too worried. I'm going to see how she goes tonight. Seems more settled and still letting me know when she's hungry.

I love the newborn smell ❤

Aww I'm so sorry you went through that. Must of been so scary. She's definitely not like that. Oh definitely is infuriating. Thank fully hasn't been so sickly today. Just making sure to keep her upright. I will do. They really are. Thank you so much 😊 oh totally worth it! 💕

Yes, I didn’t bf but a friend did who certainly used the dummy as hers was on all the time and bringing up a lot of milk. I don’t understand why some are saying you can’t over feed a bf baby. Surely if they’re sucking, they’re taking in milk??

I’m prepared to be corrected but can someone explain what the baby is doing if they’re sucking all the time - but not overfeeding?

MamaBearsss · 22/01/2024 20:19

Sounds normal, not sure why you’d call 111?!

I didn't. Someone suggested it but I know I don't need to call them

Like why bring some milk up after feed if she hasn't took too much? It's obviously too much for her tummy. It's not sick all the time. Sometimes it's just milk.

Honestly this was totally normal for me, some babies are way sickier than others. The wet nappies are a great sign.

That's sweet of you to say, thank you. I did go slightly insane at the time. She's 13 now and that comes with a whole different set of problems 😂

I'm glad your little one is doing better. You do end up second guessing yourself a lot when they're small. There's so much contradictory advice out there.

Rowen32 · 22/01/2024 20:36

In my own experience it's totally normal, my heart would be broken seeing the milk on the floor but they were grand, it wasn't reflux..

Yeah mine breaks when she brings some back up. I don't think it is reflux tbf. She doesn't have any other symptoms

Because our babies are born at least 9-12 months too early and they’re very underdeveloped. It’s not because they’ve had too much, it can happen after small feeds too.

Fair enough. She hasn't brought up much today thank fully. I imagine tho not all babas are the same tho
