To put spikes on my fence!

Next door’s cat is driving us mad. It’s using our garden constantly as it’s toilet!

We’ve tried chasing it away, when we see it. And I’ve got a spray bottle of citronella and white vinegar I’ve been spraying around the garden (and would love to spray the cat!).

So I’ve seen little plastic strips of spikes you can put on the top of the fence (it’s our fence) and I was wondering what others think about putting them up? I know it’ll look horrible but hopefully it won’t be forever and will put the cat off and then it’ll get in the habit of going somewhere else.

I've got them to stop next doors kids climbing my fence to help themselves to their footballs (endlessly kicked over in summer). They've stopped the kids climbing but my cat and neighbouring cats still merrily tootle along the top.

There’s a cheaper way to deal with that - when I had a word and they still came over I’d just pop and bin the balls.
Took about 30 to learn their lesson but not seen one for a couple of years now.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 21/01/2024 14:27

Anyone wanting a cat should be made to cat proof their garden or build a catio so they are not a nuisance to others.

OhmygodDont · 21/01/2024 14:28

The cat fencing should help the odd cat may become trapped In they don’t make the same mistake twice though. So do make sure you have a way to chase/let it out.

FofB · 21/01/2024 14:30

Our elderly rescue cat was being bullied by a younger male. We bought a motion detecting sprinkler- so when our cat went out (usually only for an hour or two and he stayed in the garden) we switched it off. Otherwise, we left it on.

Too about a week of moving it to the right position, then worked a treat. It took me a while to work out his favoured route- and as soon as he walked under out apple treat, he got a soaking.

Jesus Christ. Why didn't you contact a rescue centre FFS? I can't believe you'd rip their shelter down leaving tiny kittens motherless. Have you no compassion at all? And then you put a toxic chemical down on top. Fucking disgusting.

Sorry I should have been clearer - we didn’t know there were kittens in there till the shed was 90% down - we then took the kittens in as no rescues locally and space and we then got then seen by a vet treated etc and they were rehomed

WhoIsnt · 21/01/2024 14:54

@Princesspollyyy yeh and you'd be fully entitled to spray your neighbour if you witnessed your neighbour climbing over your fence to shit in your garden.

However, if they stayed on their own property, not so much.

So...

Absolutely.

Andbreatheee · 21/01/2024 15:25

They don't work! We used to live in a new build, so it looked like the classic patchwork of gardens behind. Next door neighbours had 5 cats - they would CONSTANTLY shit in our garden. Would dig up flowers I'd just planted and shit in those holes etc it was awful. I tried the lion poo stuff, citronella spray etc - didn't work. Our other neighbours tried the spikes and the bastarding cats would lie on them. The only thing that stopped it was when we got a dog who chased them out the garden. I'm so sorry though, it's horrendous! When we moved I was sad to leave the house but celebrating never seeing the cats again!!!

GasPanic · 21/01/2024 15:29

I used ultrasonics.

I got two of them and I got an ultrasound transducer so I could focus them together on the area where the cats came into the garden.

No more cats in the garden pretty quickly. In fact I removed the edit devices and they have never come back.

Oh well shame it's perfectly legal for cats to shit anywhere they please then isn't it, and people like you just have to put up with it.

MassageForLife · 21/01/2024 16:46

Flossflower · 21/01/2024 11:08

Why not citronella it works. Cats hate it. It won’t harm the cat.

Won't it? Given that it's toxic to cats, that's a surprising comment.

CharlotteMakepeace · 21/01/2024 17:19

Why don't you write a stern letter to the cat?

Can i just say to any posters reading this and thinking "fucking cat owners..."

We are not all like this. Most of us are reasonable, responsible people who fully understand our pet is our responsibility and that includes their shit!

Tellmesomethingidontknow · 21/01/2024 17:38

I've used the cheap version of Vics , big dollop left on flat stones by the ' toilet area ' It doesn't wash away in the rain and cats hate the intense eucalyptus smell

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 21/01/2024 17:38

SparkieTheSpaniel · 21/01/2024 12:33

I put carpet gripper strips all along the tops of my fence. Cats and burglars dislike it.

@SparkieTheSpaniel

how cruel. How would you like that done to one of your pets? Maybe under the edge of a lawn?

JennyJenny8675309 · 21/01/2024 17:52

Blahblahblahblahblahurgh · 21/01/2024 10:19

Imagine your toddler eating cat shit in their own garden. Is that not also cruel and dangerous?!

I would find an alternative that didn’t cause an animal to suffer.

tiggergoesbounce · 21/01/2024 18:06

Yes, i would do whatever it took to keep the cat out. Why cat owners harp on about cruelty to their animals but don't stop them causing the problem is beyond me.

Of course they shouldnt be pooing in anyones garden, its just so disgusting.

Start with the peppery spray and albas oil, but if that doesn't work carpet grips might be the answer.

Wouldn't be scaring your cat off before letting my dog out if you were my neighbour 🙄

hannahre · 21/01/2024 18:45

SparkieTheSpaniel · 21/01/2024 13:59

@IgnoranceNotOk no, they would have got a negative response even if the had.

@hannahre they've been there years and still going strong. Don't want to cut your hands to ribbons? Don't try climbing on my fence then.

It's plain stupidity to use something like metal pointed spikes (which rust) which could cause serious injury to wildlife or pets.

Not the normal sort of thing people use to keep cats out either, it's in the realm of barbed wire or broken glass.

I agree, and for the safety of the cat as so many are killed on the roads.

OhmygodDont · 21/01/2024 18:54

We have a catio. I dot cat proof my garden though because it would involve removing trees, swapping hedges for wooden fences and all sorts that would actually be bad for wildlife.

my cats only go into the land on harnesses and leads otherwise it’s house and catio.

SplendidUtterly · 21/01/2024 18:56

Houseplantmad · 21/01/2024 09:34

Sprinkle cayenne pepper around. It does the trick.

This.
But i do it a bit differently.
I add it to water and spray it around areas i don't want the cats near.
Since doing this not one kitty has used my little lemon tree's pot as a litter tray.

Coincidentally · 21/01/2024 18:58

Carpet gripper is an excellent idea! Cheap and just nail in with a hammer.

CoffeeMachineNewbie · 21/01/2024 18:59

Try making friends with it. They tend not to shit in their own space and it might get territorial and stop other cats.

Terrrence · 21/01/2024 19:00

Wild animals, foxes, birds, badgers, cats don't recognise ownership of land. They don't realise you think the land is yours. Just clean it up.
