To put spikes on my fence!

Next door’s cat is driving us mad. It’s using our garden constantly as it’s toilet!

We’ve tried chasing it away, when we see it. And I’ve got a spray bottle of citronella and white vinegar I’ve been spraying around the garden (and would love to spray the cat!).

So I’ve seen little plastic strips of spikes you can put on the top of the fence (it’s our fence) and I was wondering what others think about putting them up? I know it’ll look horrible but hopefully it won’t be forever and will put the cat off and then it’ll get in the habit of going somewhere else.

Try putting olbas oil on a used teabag and putting in the garden. That's a tip from gardeners question time!

My friend wanted to keep her own cat in her own garden so swore by cat fence rollers. Google that and see what you think.

CuntRYMusicStar · 21/01/2024 10:03

We got these for my parents who were having the same issue with the neighbours cats. They haven't seen them since! They also told me that a cold caller knocking on their door selling stuff said they were 'annoying' so dual purpose. My mum did tell him that if he didn't like them he could feel free to never visit again 😆

BlueMoanday · 21/01/2024 10:07

You can buy movement activated cat repellers. I bought mine on Amazon. They beep in a high pitched sequeal that deters cats. Really work.
I also put coffee grounds where they were peeing. The strong coffee smell and the gritty stuff seems to stop them.
It is infuriating.... Any bare patch of soil is an instant cat litter in our garden. If we plant seedlings they are instantly dug up and shat on.
Rose and hawthorn branches, coffee and sonic repellers seem to help.

RitzyMcFee · 21/01/2024 10:08

Get some of that expandable willow trellis and put it along the tops. If you expand it so it's long and thin it goes quite far.

My cats were using neighbours garden and after trying all sorts, we took a tip of sprinkling dreamies around her garden

Cats then ate the dreamies and apparently don't like to 💩 where they eat

It worked with ours, might be worth a try for £2-£3

Barbed wire? Pyrancantha?

Snazzysausage · 21/01/2024 10:10

We've put spikes up,we had two unneutered tom cats coming into the garden who were competing with each other and unfortunately spraying not far from the back door. I agree the smaller spiked strips don't work so we bought the long spiked version, still plastic but longer spikes.Between those and 2 sonic deterrents its worked so far 🤞 the other thing which is supposed to work is clear plastic bottles half filled with water and laid down. Apparently the reflections put them off.

Curtainpoles · 21/01/2024 10:16

The little plastic spikes have worked perfectly in our garden, but we had all the fencing redone (not because of the cats! Because it was crappy and falling down) and so everything was held together well without gaps and the plastic spikes create a border all the way round. The wooden gate out to the driveway reaches the floor and we put spikes on the top too.
Since then, no poo in our garden. But I think it's the fact that it really does surround the garden, I can see that if you have any gaps then an animal will still squeeze through.

We did try peppermint oil and a sonic cat deterrent machine, which worked well for my parents but didn't work at all in our garden for some reason.

LadyEloise1 · 21/01/2024 10:17

The high pitched sonar fox deterrent we got didn't work- we bought 3 for the garden. Total waste of money.
A fox lies beside one of them sunning himself. Angry

Please don’t use cayenne pepper. It’s a cruel thing to do to an animal. Imagine getting that in your eyes or up your nose.

Imagine your toddler eating cat shit in their own garden. Is that not also cruel and dangerous?!

Syndulla · 21/01/2024 10:22

Go with Bamboo skewers OP. You will need 100s but you can get large packs on Amazon.

It's what I had to do because my neighbour's cat was wrecking all the new flowerbeds I dug out and planted. So much money wasted on plants they destroyed.

I put the skewers in every few cm across the entire patch so it was impossible for them to walk across it.

It worked brilliantly. It's annoying when you have to remove them for weeding etc but worth the hassle to have a healthy, shit free garden!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 21/01/2024 10:27

I do sympathise. I had the cat from neighbours opposite using my front garden as a toilet and cats from next door using my back garden as a toilet and playground.

I used a water pistol and went out every time I saw the cats. Obviously couldn't do it all the time but it did help. Both neighbours have now moved away and taken their cats with them. The new neighbours have no pets. Thank goodness!

rockstarshoes · 21/01/2024 10:31

Please don't use bamboo poles you're likely to find a cat impaled on one!

Hazeleyebrowneye · 21/01/2024 10:50

We had multiple strays in/around our garden. Shitting everywhere and the dc couldn’t play in their own garden . We ripped down the shed they were sheltering in last year then found 4 week old kittens in there but the mum had run off 🤦‍♀️

Once we sorted that issue out we then took up all the gravel , put spikes on the fence ,got rid of flowerbeds and just had grass and on all paved areas put lots and lots of jeyes fluid every few days. After 3 weeks no more cat poo and didn’t see any more cats. A year later and I think I’ve seen one cat !

AlanThePig · 21/01/2024 10:57

As others have said, they rarely work. I tried them to discourage a cat from eating our wild ducklings but they didn’t work.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 21/01/2024 09:10

No I wouldn't.

Keep trying to spray the bloody cat, the spikes might hurt the foxes as well.

Double benefit.

Namechange666 · 21/01/2024 10:59

If you throw chilli powder down, they won't go near it.

Also put large lollypop sticks pointing upwards around your plants.

Also a motion activated water sprinkler could help.

I'm a cat owner and I have read those are good deterrents.

Princesspollyyy · 21/01/2024 11:05

If any of my neighbours sprayed my cat with water, I would be doing the same to them.

Oh then I’m sure you’d happily poop a scoop their garden to prevent it!

A combination of spikes, sprinkling chilli powder around my veg beds and spraying the cat with water when I saw it eventually worked at keeping it away.

MassageForLife · 21/01/2024 09:50

If you do spray the cat, don't spray it with your citronella mix - spray it with plain water.

Why not citronella it works. Cats hate it. It won’t harm the cat.

Birchtree1 · 21/01/2024 11:12

I have 1 cat that annoys my neighbours. More bird chasing than pooing (we live very rural so plenty of spaces in fields for poo)
I completely get my neighbours feelings. Collars with bells don't work, I have offered to by a water pistol so they can spray cat everything it goes into their gardens.
They declined but I'd be happy with it, it would just scare, not hurt.
They are too clever to be deterred by little spikes on fence and would probably fairly easily get around them.

rainymays · 21/01/2024 11:28

Borrow a greyhound or a terrier!

Joking, ofcourse. I have cat rollers on my fence to keep them out, worth not having my children playing in cat shit or maimed birds all over. The birds love my garden now.
