To buy strawberry toothpaste?

ThreadLasso · 21/01/2024 07:49

About eight months ago I accidentally bought strawberry toothpaste for my DCs (3 and 5). Then we went back to normal mint flavour.

Recently they've been saying that they don't like the mint one, and they don't like cleaning their teeth, and they want the strawberry one.

I am happy to get the strawberry one, but DH thinks we should stick to mint as otherwise we're encouraging their sweet tooths which isn't helpful for their teeth, and that mint is just normal toothpaste and they need to get used to it.

AIBU to get them strawberry? Should I insist on mint?

I’m an adult and use strawberry toothpaste. It stems from pregnancy sickness and not being able to tolerate mint. The strawberry flavour is much nicer and my teeth are still in good condition 🤷🏻‍♀️

What toothpaste do you use please?

While I quite like it, it's not really all that sparkly and no unicorns appear when you brush. It does taste of bubble gum though! 😁

Good lord! Just buy the strawberry toothpaste if that's what they like! It's actually not that sweet at all (I accidentally used some of my DDs once)

@Heather37231 There is a make that’s really popular on TikTok and insta at the mo thats aimed at adults and all sorts of flavours. I genuinely can’t remember the name but DD really wants it, the fluoride is only about 1100 though so I refuse to buy it.

So one brand not having enough fluoride becomes “the strawberry ones tend not to have enough fluoride”?

Hi smile and it's about £11
Sainsbury's has the right amount of fluoride and is about £1...

My kids refuse anything but strawberry toothpaste, it had never occurred to me that this might be an issue. Lots of kids don't like mint, that's why the strawberry one exists. This is not worth stressing about in the least.

Also as long as it is from a reputable brand (we get the aqua fresh strawberry flavour) and you use it on the age range stated on the packet the fluoride level will be fine. And it's surprising that this needs saying, but please do not buy toothpaste off TikTok.

The problem is that a lot of the ‘flavoured’ toothpastes don’t have the ideal fluoride content. The latest advice is to forget the ones aimed for different ages and just have a ‘family’ toothpaste and go back to using different amounts for different ages.
For all those saying pick your battles please remember NHS dentistry is in crisis so it is very important to look after children’s teeth.

Presumably by "'flavoured' toothpastes" you mean "toothpastes with flavours other than the mint flavour we as a society have decided is somehow 'standard'"? Because the minty flavour of most UK toothpastes isn't down to the active ingredients, it's solely down to the flavourings added.

I agree the 'age ratings' on a lot of toothpastes are just a matter of marketing. The Aquafresh Splash one my daughter likes (strawberry and mint flavour, incidentally, so could be a compromise for the OP!) has exactly the same fluoride content of 1450 ppm as the one the adults in the house use, so there's no reason she would have to stop using it other than the possibility she won't want to use a 'babyish' toothpaste.

Why would the "latest advice" care what the toothpaste tastes like? Why wouldn't it just state that you should buy a toothpaste approved by the BDA or similar, with the right fluoride content?

We got dental care training when working in a care home- the dentist trainer said that the age range stated on the tube doesn't matter. As long as it has 1450 ppm fluoride it can be used for any age. She specifically recommended trying "child" toothpaste, eg strawberry, for our residents who weren't keen on standard mint.
She also said it is absolutely fine to use "adults" toothpaste on children.

I agree that there is a real gap in the market for "sensitive" toothpaste in non-spicy flavours! Why can't manufacturers imagine that some people with sensitive teeth might also have sensitive lips and gums?!

One option for people looking for less sweet non-mint options is Kingfisher's fennel toothpaste. Just make sure you get the red tube; the blue tube has no fluoride.

It's more important that they brush their teeth If they like the strawberry flavour, they will be happy to use it
I remember buying bubblegum flavour which was blue!
