To buy strawberry toothpaste?

About eight months ago I accidentally bought strawberry toothpaste for my DCs (3 and 5). Then we went back to normal mint flavour.

Recently they've been saying that they don't like the mint one, and they don't like cleaning their teeth, and they want the strawberry one.

I am happy to get the strawberry one, but DH thinks we should stick to mint as otherwise we're encouraging their sweet tooths which isn't helpful for their teeth, and that mint is just normal toothpaste and they need to get used to it.

AIBU to get them strawberry? Should I insist on mint?

I don't have mint toothpaste.

I had an infection on my tongue about 6 years ago, and since then, I've been unable to tolerate mint. It genuinely feels like my whole mouth is on fire.
I now use a toothpaste called Oranurse, which is flavourless and non-foaming. It was actually designed for people with textural and taste sensitivites due to Autism. It has the required level of fluoride, which some of the non-mint flavoured toothpastes don't.

lionseggs · 21/01/2024 10:22

As long as it has the right amount of fluoride it dosent matter

spottydinosaur · 21/01/2024 11:09

I asked the dentist this and she said the strawberry one was fine to use!

ManateeFair · 21/01/2024 11:30

Provided it’s got fluoride in it, it’s fine. I dislike the flavour of mint and as a result, brushing my teeth is an annoying chore. If there were adult toothpastes that were a) easy to get hold of, b) had the same fluoride content and c) tasted of something nice, I would buy them. So I say crack on with the strawberry one.

By the way, the ‘sweet tooth’ thing makes no sense here - mint in toothpaste is also sweet. It’s no less sweet than strawberry. Does your DH think, eg, Polos or Mint Imperials are somehow savoury?

Dilbertian · 21/01/2024 11:38

Try Punch and Judy, @ManateeFair. That's the one my adult dc uses. They say it's not sickly like the supermarket ones.

Paw2024 · 21/01/2024 12:39

I use Sainsbury's berry one
Mint burns my mouth. Dentist said as long as it had correct fluoride levels it was fine "you can brush your teeth with unicorn flavour for all I care"

MissRainbowBrite · 21/01/2024 12:57

My daughter really dislikes the minty ones but has been tolerating them until recently when she started having a brace fitting and the orthodontist recommended Oranurse. It has no flavour and doesn't foam so she now happily brushes her teeth with no complaints and it's the same fluoride level as minty toothpaste. So a winner all round.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 21/01/2024 13:11

Superdrug do a coconut one with adult fluoride levels. Still struggling to find a decent mouthwash other than berry.

MissusKay · 21/01/2024 13:15

The flavor is there to make brushing tolerable. There's no other reason for it. As long as the fluoride is there it really doesn't matter.

Do what works! It's not worth the battle. 🪥

Thelnebriati · 21/01/2024 13:44

Your DH is being weirdly controlling. The strawberry children's toothpaste isn't sweeter than any other brand - ask me how I know! There's a tasty orange one as well.
We get different flavours from the international store, I like the clove, and the lemon and ginseng.

ThreadLasso · 21/01/2024 22:36

Thanks all! Sounds like there's nothing wrong with strawberry then but I will check the fluoride levels. And maybe make DH finish the rest of the mint one!

morrisons berry gel has the recommended fluoride content (1450? if i remember correctly)

I’m an adult and use strawberry toothpaste. It stems from pregnancy sickness and not being able to tolerate mint. The strawberry flavour is much nicer and my teeth are still in good condition 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yep strawberry toothpaste was the only way I could brush my teeth whilst pregnant. Mint toothpaste just made me wanna vom

jackles · 22/01/2024 01:40

I've always loathed mint flavour. Sadly most other toothpaste flavours are pretty disgusting too. For a while there was one called "Close-up" which was clove flavour - quite nice but it gave me mouth ulcers 🙁
I hadn't heard of Oranurse, I must try it!
Would love a tomato or gin-and-tonic flavoured one...

Dorriethelittlewitch · 22/01/2024 01:43

I use a lemon one, dc1 likes strawberry, dc2 and dh use mint. All have the same amount of fluoride.

Dc1 is 8, hates the taste of mint and doesn't have a sweet tooth.

After years of fighting with a child over toothpaste flavours her new dentist recommended this one. We have no issues with it at all now

The problem is that a lot of the ‘flavoured’ toothpastes don’t have the ideal fluoride content. The latest advice is to forget the ones aimed for different ages and just have a ‘family’ toothpaste and go back to using different amounts for different ages.
For all those saying pick your battles please remember NHS dentistry is in crisis so it is very important to look after children’s teeth.

What’s your evidence for flavoured toothpastes not having the right fluoride content? All the ones I have seen are made by the same manufacturers as the mint ones and have the same fluoride content.

Heather37231 · 22/01/2024 01:54

What teeth are concerned, the most important thing is to make sure you child doesn’t rinse their mouth out with water afterwards. The toothpaste needs to stay on the teeth. I had to stop my MIL from well-meaningly offering DS a tumbler of water to swill round his mouth after brushing. Lots of us were brought up that way but it’s against current guidance.

Swoopingfantails · 22/01/2024 01:55

My eldest as a child loathed the taste of mint. We used some other strawberry toothpaste with the same fluoride level. You realise that it's not actually sugar but artificial sweetener. They eventually moved to adult toothpaste. They turned out vegetarian and don't have much of a sweet tooth. I don't think the toothpaste made any difference.

NoMoreFalafelsForYou · 22/01/2024 01:58

I'd be worried about the fluoride content, not the flavour. The strawberry flavour ones usually tend to have less

WolvesDiscoandBoogaloo · 22/01/2024 02:08

I might get some strawberry toothpaste myself. I can't stand mint. I have to brush and rinse with hot water otherwise it burns my mouth.

steff13 · 22/01/2024 02:12

My mouth doesn't feel clean unless I've used mint. But other people don't feel that same way and ultimately it is cleaning their teeth so who cares what flavor it is? Is he aware that mint toothpaste is also sweet?

Wibblebits · 22/01/2024 02:41

They've had bubblegum flavour with glitter toothpaste forever ask your dentist or chemist to recommend the best one.

LuciaPillson · 22/01/2024 04:57

Since starting chemo, mint is actually painful to use. It's like brushing with needles! I like an enamel building, sensitive teeth toothpaste and haven't found any (I'm not in the UK) without mint. Did find one enamel building kids' toothpaste in strawberry, which is my current favourite. I also have the unicorn bubblegum one and a couple of other strawberries. I hate the fact that all adult toothpastes you can find in the shops seemingly have to be mint flavoured. And you don't get kids' toothpastes specifically formulated for sensitive teeth.

Off topic but I'm also hypersensitive to anything spicy. Sauces etc that I never thought were at all spicy are on the verge of being painful now. Ginger can be a problem too. I have more sympathy now for people who can't tolerate any hot spice since I have become one of them! Miss my sriracha though. I'm ok so far with things like cumin thank goodness.

Toddlerteaplease · 22/01/2024 05:15

I used to love the strawberry toothpaste when I was little.
