I've got less than £100 in the bank and no payday this month due to being in between jobs although I do get a JSA payment of £164 next week.

I sell cosmetics on ebay just for pin money so hopefully will get some sales this weekend as I'm away visiting a friend this weekend which is a bad time to be skint, but I need to make use of the free time whilst not working.

Not sure if you know or not but eBay are changing the rules regarding declaring income made from eBay this month - you have to declare any money made from either £1000 made or 30 items sold

Bendrix · 20/01/2024 22:57

Skint AF
Having to consider selling our second home in South of France and only managed one skiing holiday this year too.
Also have had to downgrade to sainsburys from waitrose
Times are hard !!

£28.00 in my current account until pay day
£9k debt (not inc' student / mortgage)
Fridge happy until pay day.

However - big dentistry bill + 2k to overpay my solo mortgage in February in an effort to bring the LTV down before moving to new lender. I had to sell my car a few months back just to cover the month as I found myself in the first week of the month with £11.00 - It felt really crap. My family are not in a position to help and I'm used to becoming a bit of a Dell Boy when I need to (instruments, cars... gold... it all goes)

I'm considering selling the car again for the mortgage reduction as I feel that the 2-3k selling the car will be worth the inconvenience for the better interest rate in the long run.

I believe circumstances will improve - But in the UK it sometimes feels like life is a game and only a select few get to see the rules on how to win.

The stats on social mobility (and the posts from people that have gone into debt because of maternity) really makes me consider whether I should sell, pay off the debts and live in the EU for a bit to recover and actually live rather than just marginally surviving.

Not skint, I'm able to save roughly £1000 of my paycheck each month after all bills are paid, however that's only because my partner did a DRO. 6 months ago we were struggling, going into the overdraft every month, almost £40k of debt. Now have almost £5k in the bank saved up

i always consider “skint” as having nothing or very, very little left. So on that basis I’m not skint. But I’m not well off.

we have debt that we’re repaying and no savings. But we can pay all our bills, buy everything we need and some of what we want.

I’ve been completely skint before - behind on rent, not able to meet payments on credit cards, missing meals etc. I thank goodness I’m not in that place anymore.

Same here. We’ve got money on credit card but we can meet the payments and we can clear it in a few months with careful budgeting. I don’t consider that skint.

In the past I’ve had times where I literally had £10 to last me a week for food and petrol, living in a freezing house with no ability to heat it properly. The money I knew was coming in would pay my rent and utilities, and £50 for the months food and petrol. nothing else. I had no access to overdrafts or credit cards. That was skint.

Carouselfish · 20/01/2024 23:14

Had to ask for CM early this month as no wages for Jan so right at end of overdraft. Have small cc bill but also a loan. It's manageable, but like others, one bad thing happening wipes me out. We've just had a £800 electric bill for the last quarter so that has buggered February.

Ireolu · 20/01/2024 23:19

January is long yes but there are positives I try to focus on

It's the last month of council tax DD for the yr (we pay over 10 months). I know we will have more money in the joint account before we start to get battered again in April. It's also the same for some subscriptions I have to pay to work so that cheers me on.

Large tax bill for Jan is always annoying would rather pay now than be penalised later. Not skint, not loaded either but definitely grateful.

Jbrown76 · 20/01/2024 23:20

For those that asked..3.5k in savings and about £250.00 in current account. I'm not skint, but I have been and I grew up in poverty. The fear never leaves you and just reading the responses of those genuinely skint on Reddit and on here...no savings, no safety net, I can't understand how in a wealthy nation we have people struggling, it's awful, I truly hope things improve

Because capitalism will always have winners and losers.

On the whole the less fortunate are better off here than in many countries. We don’t have slums made out of sheets of tin, and we don’t have children sleeping on the streets on the whole. Everyone can access healthcare free at the point of access. There are provisions, even if they’ve been whittled down and down.

Nsky62 · 20/01/2024 23:31

I’m ok, have savings depleted a bit
only me tho

Happilyobtuse · 20/01/2024 23:35

The COL has gone up so much that everyone is feeling the pinch. We live well within our means, no debt other than mortgage, but we are down to a single income currently. My last job was a terribly toxic work environment so I quit, as it just wasn’t working for us as a family. Now home life is better with more time for kids but finding we have to be really careful with money to ensure we end the month with a bit to spare. We have no holidays planned, when usually we would do one international trip either in feb or april.

Really struggling to save anything while we used to save between 1.5-2 K per month when I was working. I am looking out for new role so hope something comes up soon. We have about 44K in savings and £800 in current account, next pay check coming in on 27th so should be ok. But it is annoying when you aren’t really doing anything but still can’t save. Next year we have a child who is going to start school so some respite in terms of nursery fees which are exorbitant.

MissersMercer · 20/01/2024 23:36

I'm skint as in I want to go on holiday and can't but I've just booked a £160 spa day.

22k in savings account which I don't want to touch

146.00 in current account to last me until Thursday

Fanlover1122 · 20/01/2024 23:40

Not a boomer nor inherited wealth.

Do have in excess of six figures saved, seven figure home (mostly paid off). Come from a council estate - grew up thinking it has to be better than this. Entirely self- made, it is possible.

ASGIRC · 20/01/2024 23:42

Not particularly, but Im not living large either..
My mortgage payments have doubled in two years, which has made me less.. flush. I have some savings, but not "enough to live a year on" savings. Maybe 3 or 4 months.

But I can afford to go out for dinner here and there, maybe buy some new clothes or shoes every once in a while.

SayNoToDoorToDoor · 20/01/2024 23:47

I’m £50 over budget already and I need to last until 8th Feb when my credit card ticks over.

Ive been a lone parent for 11 years and last year (2023) was the worse for me financially I’ve ever had as I was over my monthly budget for the first 4 months of the year.

I’m feeling sorry for myself as I can’t even afford a meal out with the DC for my milestone birthday.

For some yes.

For many no.

Very unlikely for most.

TeacherCollection · 20/01/2024 23:52

£133.69 in current account to last til payday on the 31st
£5 M&S gift voucher

Never ending bills and expenses, never any money for fun. Sometimes it feels like a never ending, pointless slog.

ChewbaccasMrs · 20/01/2024 23:52

Skint, skint as in the worst it's been in about 10 years and I hate it and I'm determined this is the last time it happens!

I get paid next week and I'm going to do a massive food shop(a months worth)put money aside for petrol for the whole month and pay the gas and electric and any I have left over is being saved and I'm not touching a penny of that money.

petermaddog · 20/01/2024 23:53

skint just enough to electic and water pay mortage after these .2. i bank
gov gives me 200 month or i would be dead

petermaddog · 20/01/2024 23:53

oops 200 for food

alwayshavebeenfemale · 20/01/2024 23:55

This thread is heartbreaking. I've spent all my life skint. Big overdrafts, credit cards, things on credit etc. But sadly my fantastic husband of over 30 years died. I was left with the mortgage paid off and a bit more life insurance with which I sorted things out and have some savings now (although only a widows pension income)
So I've had nothing when I was happy and had my darling husband to do things with and now I can afford things but have no one to do them with.
I wish everyone the best and hope you can get through the rough times and enjoy some happiness xxx

Not much I can do or say about it at the end of the day! But it would have been nice to see a little more as it'll be the only way in this day and age that I would be EVER to have money for a house deposit.

I suspect a lot are in the same position as I am. An aging population means family inheritance etc is becoming a thing of the past.

By the time I get any significant inheritance, I will likely be close to retirement age.

As horrible as this all sounds.

You might not get any inheritance if they read your post. You are not entitled to inheritance.
