Your 9-2 job

I’ve been made redundant after working 40+ hours a week FT constantly on edge from workloads and things like with evening/weekend messages from the CEO. The ship has started sinking so he can’t afford to keep me on and has made me redundant.

I’ve been coasting along and know this is the kick I probably needed to find a happier life with a better balance.

I’m hoping you can inspire me - does anyone work 4 days per week say 9-2? (School times) - if yes, what do you do?

NC as previous posts could be outing and I’ve been made redundant which hasn’t been announced yet. Shamelessly posting here for traffic.

I work for a charity, although been there for years and negotiated down to these hours when DC started school. They're v accommodating and I can work relatively flexibly so if DC is unwell, I'll just do my hours in the evening when DH is home. We do this a fair bit in the school holidays too which is a big help!

I am a music teacher employed by the local council. I choose my hours so have put them all within school time.

Welfare rights for a charity, but providing a service that is NHS funded.

I do 18 hours pw and was able to choose which days/hours I wanted. I work 8.30-2.30 Tues-Thurs.

The FTE salary is a tad over £30k for 37 hours pw, which is low for the work we do compared to other employers, but they are a great organisation to work for in every other way.

Spagb0l · 08/02/2024 08:45

I work Monday 9.30-5.30
Tues weds thurs 9.30-2.45
Friday 9.30-5.30.

I could do all school hours if I wish but I have wrap around care for Mondays be Friday.

I'm in finance, working mostly remotely with a day in the office twice a month.

I work for a large insurer and a lot of people are part time/have flexible working patterns, a couple only work term time. My employer are really good about offering flexible working patterns where possible

Greendoorsaremyfavourite · 08/02/2024 08:52

To add...I'm contacted regularly by recruiters and find the majority of companies are willing to consider flexible working patterns.

I work in IT, user and systems support and I do 9-1.30 four days a week for a charity.
The pay isn’t great, my organisation have just advertised for waiting staff to be paid the same rate as me, but part time jobs in IT are incredibly rare so I just have to cope on the low wage because my health means I wouldn’t be able to work full time.
Edited to say I get £1100 a month at the moment, we just got a big pay rise.

I laughed when reading this as I do/was doing similar and then I post on MN and see all my typos & grammatical errors!

I was considering making the freelance leap but it feels a bit scary! Thank you though - your role sounds very similar to my experience and it’s great to know that jobs like this exist

I do freelance PR copywriting/social media/reports too but what I specialise in is seasonal and I don't want to work in another field so I have a 20 hour a week job as a Parish Council Clerk. Didn't even know this job existed 18 months ago!

Hey OP, how are you getting on now? I've recently been made redundant from my school-hours term-time job, so this thread has been useful.
