Embarrassing to stand on the bus?

dottypotter · 18/01/2024 21:45

Waiting for the bus earlier. There were two women 20s I would say. When they saw the bus was quite full as it came to stop one said this.

Dosent look like there's any seats. It's embarrassing to stand.
Friend Shrugged and they got on.
I noticed they went further down the bus and did actually manage to get a seat each. Not together but they got a seat near each other.
I'd never heard that before and never heard anyone say it was embarrassing to stand.
I don't feel embarrassed do you? Just glad to get on and get to my destination?

Perhaps they are self conscious? What does it matter to you?

WolfFoxHare · 18/01/2024 21:48

Maybe she has balance issues and would be embarrassed if she fell over.

DonnaBanana · 18/01/2024 21:49

Seems a bit weird. I could understand some people being embarrassed to go on a bus at all but once you’re on what does it matter you’re all in the same boat

WashItTomorrow · 18/01/2024 21:49

Very odd. I can’t imagine what could be embarrassing about it. Perhaps they thought it was “lesser” to stand.

WinterSnowFox · 18/01/2024 21:51

Yes I find it embarrassing as I hate being in peoples way and if the pram/ wheelchair but is full so can’t stand there it means you are in everyone’s way when people come on and it can feel very awkward a few times I’ve actually got off as I hate blocking the way

DidntReallyMeanIt · 18/01/2024 21:51

Maybe they've fallen over before 🤷‍♂️

It's not really a comment I'd think about again, especially if I heard it out of context like that.

HardcoreLadyType · 18/01/2024 21:53

I hate sitting in the priority seat. I’m always a bit tense, worrying about the people getting on, and whether someone needs it. I’d rather stand than sit there.

Lots of people comment on things on here that aren't anyone's business.

This.

I have balance issues, I find it embarrassing to stand.

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 18/01/2024 21:58

Dunno. This generation baffle me at least 90% of the time!

I LOVE the busses with the huge front window, standing right at the front.

Urcheon · 18/01/2024 22:01

There are people on here who think going to the cinema alone is strange and embarrassing, or that using a loo other than your home loo is unacceptable. Some people are unfathomable.

Eh? Why sit there then? Unless you mean that you are worried that people may think that you do not need to sit there. If that is the case, then you need to work on ignoring people.

ElliesMum16 · 18/01/2024 22:05

Sometimes when buses brake suddenly you sort of lurch around and lose your balance when you're standing - maybe they don't enjoy that? Especially if they were wearing heels, short skirts etc. Maybe they find it uncomfortable when people squeeze past them to get on and off? Maybe they just don't enjoy the feeling of other people looking at them (as you're naturally more conspicuous when you're standing even when people aren't actually looking at you). Maybe they've had a bad experience when standing on a bus before (I've fainted while standing on a bus, that was embarrassing!). Maybe 'embarrassing' wasn't even quite the right word for her feelings about standing but it was what she came up with in the moment. Lots of possibilities!

I don’t. As I said, I’d rather stand than sit there. ⬆️ See?

This DD has balance issues and she won't get on a bus that she can't get a seat on because she knows she will fall over and be embarrassed the late it happened lots of people laughed at her

5128gap · 18/01/2024 22:09

I'd imagine that meant self conscious standing in the aisle in full view of everyone, especially if they were the only two standing. They're young women, they probably have experience of being stared at.

It read as if you do sit there, and hate it. If you don't do that, then why even mention itHmm.

CheesecakeandCrackers · 18/01/2024 22:34

I've not heard of this but the first time I got a bus with my mum she took the last seat and I stood. She thought it was hilarious and odd to stand. I'm from London so I'm usually stood on a bus and thought it was her view because she rarely uses public transport

Your mum thought it was odd to stand on a bus where she took the last seat so you had to stand? If that's odd what is her normal for when there are no seats? Jump on someone's lap Confused

GlitteryDirt · 18/01/2024 22:37

Maybe she had wet herself and it was going to be more obvious standing up.

Cheeesus · 18/01/2024 22:40

I can imagine my teen DD feeling this a bit. See also carrying a bag/wearing a coat and other ridiculous things.

I doubt it would stop her getting on a bus though. And she’s only 15.

bombardelli · 18/01/2024 22:42

They’re the same people who won’t eat alone, shop alone or watch a movie alone. Everything is embarrassing for them.
