Delivery service shouldn’t get away with this!

i’m just so frustrated with companies like Deliveroo, Uber eats, Just eat etc… being allowed to rip people off.

I have a disability and mainly rely on online grocery shopping with a slot booked in advance, but every now and then I forget something on my order or need something unexpectedly and in those cases I thought a relatively quick supermarket delivery would be so helpful.

I placed a grocery order with Deliveroo and my order turned up with several missing items, I contacted customer services which is just a live chat service and was refused a refund. They said they wanted photographic proof but I said I can’t take photos of something that hasn’t arrived! I lost out on about £15 and had to do without the items.

A few weeks later I ran out of cat food unexpectedly and placed another order adding a few essentials so I didn’t have to pay for a separate grocery order, I waited and waited but 90 minutes after confirming my order it was cancelled. By the time it was cancelled (10 pm on a sunday) everywhere was closed. I did get a £5 off voucher this time and didn’t lose money but I still was inconvenienced and had to ask a friend to bring me some cat food.

I made a third order using the voucher as I was really poorly and again waited past the estimated delivery time. However when it didn’t come and the shop I ordered from had closed I gave up and placed an order direct through the supermarket and paid for it to come the next day.
I was woken up the next morning at 7.30 where a delivery driver had my previous nights order and insisted I take it. I said I wanted refunding as I’d ordered it from a more reliable source so the driver took it away.
I contacted customer service and said how late my order was and I didn’t accept it so I wanted a refund. I said some of the order was meat and fresh food that I didn’t know how it had been stored overnight.
I was refused a refund and ended up with nothing as it was my own fault apparently for not taking my order! I ended up £45 down which left things very tight financially and it was upsetting feeling I’d been ripped off.
I contacted Deliveroo head office via email but they agreed with the staff member I should have cancelled or taken the delivery- I couldn’t cancel as it had been shopped for and dispatched.

I was emailed a promo code with £10 off to try Uber eats and thought I’d see if they were any better compared to deliveroo. I used the grocery service again and more than half my items were missing much to my frustration. However with Uber eats I was refunded for the items in credit on the app.
I used it again for another grocery order to use up my credit and tracked the driver collecting my order and driving towards my house. He suddenly was unavailable for tracking so I tried to contact him, I then got a message on the app saying my order had been delivered.
No one had knocked and I hadn’t heard a car so I tracked the driver and it showed him on a nearby housing estate then he went offline.
I contacted Uber eats who refused to believe I didn’t receive my order and charged me for an order that I believe the driver stole. I have since spotted the car that I tracked that night parked outside a house in the same area of the housing estate I tracked him on.

My Friend was visiting a few months later and ordered us both some food from a takeaway on Deliveroo to be delivered, it said over an hour so we were chatting and not constantly watching the app as we thought the driver would knock on the door when he came.
we started to get hungry though and realised well over an hour had passed so checked on the app and the food said delivered. I looked outside and no sign of it and my friend couldn’t contact the driver as it was no longer a live delivery. Deliveroo insisted it had been delivered and kept giving the same response. As my friend was leaving she found our takeaway dumped on the roadside be end of my driveway. The driver obviously didn’t want to waste time looking for my door!
My friend tried to get a refund for the cold abandoned food but got sick of wasting her time and energy.

I went to complain on trust pilot to find hundreds and hundreds of people had faced the same issues and lost out on money and had missing items, their orders had been wrong, late or never arrived.

I will never use Deliveroo or Uber eats again which is a shame because in theory it’s a good idea. I have had a bit more success with just eat where my order usually arrives with no issues and on the occasion they got the order wrong it was refunded.
I noticed on the trust pilot reviews that a lot of the people who were using the grocery service were disabled like me and it makes me feel like we are being taken advantage of.
These companies are already make millions and prices are a lot higher buying on app rather then directly from the store and delivery and service charges push the prices up more. I feel the least they could do would be to compensate and apologise people for any missing orders or items or wrong or late orders.
AIBU for thinking these companies are wrong to rip people off? Was it my own fault for continuing to use them knowing the risks?

I refused to use Deliveroo after the delivery driver refused to give me my order without ID to prove I was over 18 year and could have alcohol delivered. I would have understood if I had actually ordered alcohol but I didn't! I don't drink so had ordered a bottle of coke. I told him to look in the bag to prove I didn't have alcohol but he wouldn't. I refused to show him my ID and told him that I would be complaining. He took the items away and I didn't get a refund. I've never used any of these delivery companies since. I assumed this driver was trying to get my personal details although I may be overthinking it.

YANBU.

Amazon have Morrisons same day delivery for some fresh items if they are in your area.
They don’t delivery in my area but I know my sibling has had to use them before now and was quite pleased with them. There is a minimum order but far better than losing money and not getting your goods.

Nonamesleft1 · 17/01/2024 19:27

Ocado. Never refused a refund. Price match Tesco.

i’ve tried most and Ocado have been the most reliable/easy to deal with.

Yes this. Amazon are pretty good for same-day delivery. You can also choose what your substitutions are. If you order before 11.30 am Sainsbury's also has a same-day delivery.

Fluffywabbits · 17/01/2024 19:33

I've had similarly bad service with the express service that asda offer. They use uber and £8.50 for same day delivery isn't too bad in an emergency but not when whole bags of shopping go missing.

Does anyone know if the morrisons via amazon delivery service arrives in crates or bags? I can't bend down to unpack a crate at the door at the moment but could drag a cpl of bags indoors and then unpack (on my knees!).

Grilledsquid · 17/01/2024 19:34

I mean like... You all still order even after massive fuck ups so yeah. They get away with it.
I second amazon.
They are also ripping restaurants off but no one cares

i have used Ocado forever, but they really are not as reliable as they used to be and they charge you the price of the subsititution rather than the original price ie got charged £5 for natoora aubergines which wereas the orignal ones were only under £2. Have been sent £20 steak instead of the 3 for £10 steak. . They really went downhill when they switched from waitrose to m&s

ChocHotolate · 17/01/2024 19:37

I am banned from Uber (taxi) because I refused to pay for 4 take aways which appeared as unpaid on my account despite never having ordered from them. Like the OP, I am unable to prove that I never ordered them

Rosscameasdoody · 17/01/2024 19:46

I don’t understand why you weren’t refunded for the missing items in the Deliveroo order. I have a Deliveroo account and on the odd occasion when things in the grocery order are missing I go onto the app and report what’s missing. You aren’t asked to upload photos of the missing items, you’re asked to upload either a photo of the receipt or the bags used for delivery, with the order label on them. The missing items are then refunded as a credit to your account and you can use it on your next shop. I’ve never refused an order so can’t comment on that, but I’ve never been refused a refund for a missing item.

CeeJay81 · 17/01/2024 19:46

That's really shit but I live in a rural area where these services don't exist or Ocado. So people have to manage without them.

Morrisons via Amazon is a really good service. The shopping arrives packed in sturdy paper bags and the couriers will bring them to the room of your choice.

NannyGythaOgg · 17/01/2024 20:02

Another vote for Morrison's same day delivery through Amazon.

Before Christmas I got 2 bottles of liquers refunded because they were delivered with the security tags still on. (Wire round the neck, so still usable - although had to put up with lots of banter about me nicking them)

Fluffywabbits · 17/01/2024 20:14

Thanks @Rosscameasdoody that’s really helpful to know!

Minimili · 17/01/2024 20:49

I didn’t know about Morrisons through Amazon so I’ll be checking that out, thank you to everyone who suggested it.
I’ve only really used those services out of desperation in the past, they haven’t done local restaurants any favours where I live and I don’t want to support that.
I live in a rural area but luckily not far enough from the nearest town that supermarkets deliver so I’m not sure if Amazon will do it in my area but I’ll check now.

I won’t be using any in future no matter how desperate I am because I probably wouldn’t receive my order anyway

MillicentRogers · 17/01/2024 20:56

We used Morrisons through Amazon. Once.

Never again.

It was an 'emergency' shop for an unexpected get together.

We put NO substitutions and they substituted every single vegetarian item with meat items or items not suitable for vegetarian because they contained gelatine etc.

There were other substitutions as well.

They did refund and tell us to keep all the items but that was beside the point we used them for same day delivery.

1daughterand3sons · 17/01/2024 20:57

Last time I ordered from Morrisons on Amazon the shopping come in brown paper bags. That was a few months back not sure if things changed.

Barleysugar86 · 17/01/2024 21:01

Ocado and Iceland have never let me down. Occasional missing item but always refunded without question. I found a bit of something disgusting in a can of baked beans from Ocado this week and they refunded me the whole six pack cost, even though it was probably just the one tin (can;t face opening another one just yet to see). I've never had that experience with deliveroo being left like that, thats really quite shocking!

bobomomo · 17/01/2024 21:10

Note that the express delivery services eg Morrison's by Amazon, whoosh etc are not available unless you live in major cities and fairly central. For emergencies coop is on Deliveroo and is very reliable here just super expensive. We don't have Uber eats around here. Waitrose is also on Deliveroo but I've never used them, the issues are usually with the courier, it's with the company packing

Extrasprinklesplz · 17/01/2024 22:17

I don't use deliveroo or Uber anymore because of this. I use Amazon for larger orders, or things like gopuff or getir for smaller orders or for items I've forgotten (I have referral codes too 😉)
For a takeaway I won't use any on Uber or deliveroo unless I know the restaurant themselves are reliable. Ordering directly can be better for reliability too.

NigellaAwesome · 18/01/2024 05:38

Can you do a section 75 refund on the ones you were overcharged on?

DS answered the door to a delivery person a few weeks ago. Was handed a bag which he thought was for us. It was a takeaway meal for 4 people. No paperwork to say who it was from, so we couldn't contact anyone. Someone probably lost out as a result

determinedtomakethiswork · 18/01/2024 05:46

Do you have a co-op anywhere near you they deliver within two hours and are really good for the basics.

SimplyDiana · 18/01/2024 05:48

Can you request a refund via your bank? Mine allowed me to do this via the app recently for contraceptives that didn’t arrive. I had to show evidence of the order and my attempts to resolve it with the pharmacy but they did sort it pretty quickly.

BlindurErBóklausMaður · 18/01/2024 06:03

As above, Ocado, and even Sainsbury's. Loads of offers, multibuys etc. Great customer service. Never had a problem.

Do you think the drivers have much of a choice? The app won't move forward to be able to click delivered ( and therefore driver not paid). So you are happy for the driver to get the sack when he was trying to do his job properly because you were being awkward??!

It's not just alcohol that needs ID . Paracetamol, vapes cigarettes and lucozade/ energy drinks also cause the app to require id.

I refuse to use any of them because of how they rip off restaurants, and how they treat drivers.
