Delivery service shouldn’t get away with this!

i’m just so frustrated with companies like Deliveroo, Uber eats, Just eat etc… being allowed to rip people off.

I have a disability and mainly rely on online grocery shopping with a slot booked in advance, but every now and then I forget something on my order or need something unexpectedly and in those cases I thought a relatively quick supermarket delivery would be so helpful.

I placed a grocery order with Deliveroo and my order turned up with several missing items, I contacted customer services which is just a live chat service and was refused a refund. They said they wanted photographic proof but I said I can’t take photos of something that hasn’t arrived! I lost out on about £15 and had to do without the items.

A few weeks later I ran out of cat food unexpectedly and placed another order adding a few essentials so I didn’t have to pay for a separate grocery order, I waited and waited but 90 minutes after confirming my order it was cancelled. By the time it was cancelled (10 pm on a sunday) everywhere was closed. I did get a £5 off voucher this time and didn’t lose money but I still was inconvenienced and had to ask a friend to bring me some cat food.

I made a third order using the voucher as I was really poorly and again waited past the estimated delivery time. However when it didn’t come and the shop I ordered from had closed I gave up and placed an order direct through the supermarket and paid for it to come the next day.
I was woken up the next morning at 7.30 where a delivery driver had my previous nights order and insisted I take it. I said I wanted refunding as I’d ordered it from a more reliable source so the driver took it away.
I contacted customer service and said how late my order was and I didn’t accept it so I wanted a refund. I said some of the order was meat and fresh food that I didn’t know how it had been stored overnight.
I was refused a refund and ended up with nothing as it was my own fault apparently for not taking my order! I ended up £45 down which left things very tight financially and it was upsetting feeling I’d been ripped off.
I contacted Deliveroo head office via email but they agreed with the staff member I should have cancelled or taken the delivery- I couldn’t cancel as it had been shopped for and dispatched.

I was emailed a promo code with £10 off to try Uber eats and thought I’d see if they were any better compared to deliveroo. I used the grocery service again and more than half my items were missing much to my frustration. However with Uber eats I was refunded for the items in credit on the app.
I used it again for another grocery order to use up my credit and tracked the driver collecting my order and driving towards my house. He suddenly was unavailable for tracking so I tried to contact him, I then got a message on the app saying my order had been delivered.
No one had knocked and I hadn’t heard a car so I tracked the driver and it showed him on a nearby housing estate then he went offline.
I contacted Uber eats who refused to believe I didn’t receive my order and charged me for an order that I believe the driver stole. I have since spotted the car that I tracked that night parked outside a house in the same area of the housing estate I tracked him on.

My Friend was visiting a few months later and ordered us both some food from a takeaway on Deliveroo to be delivered, it said over an hour so we were chatting and not constantly watching the app as we thought the driver would knock on the door when he came.
we started to get hungry though and realised well over an hour had passed so checked on the app and the food said delivered. I looked outside and no sign of it and my friend couldn’t contact the driver as it was no longer a live delivery. Deliveroo insisted it had been delivered and kept giving the same response. As my friend was leaving she found our takeaway dumped on the roadside be end of my driveway. The driver obviously didn’t want to waste time looking for my door!
My friend tried to get a refund for the cold abandoned food but got sick of wasting her time and energy.

I went to complain on trust pilot to find hundreds and hundreds of people had faced the same issues and lost out on money and had missing items, their orders had been wrong, late or never arrived.

I will never use Deliveroo or Uber eats again which is a shame because in theory it’s a good idea. I have had a bit more success with just eat where my order usually arrives with no issues and on the occasion they got the order wrong it was refunded.
I noticed on the trust pilot reviews that a lot of the people who were using the grocery service were disabled like me and it makes me feel like we are being taken advantage of.
These companies are already make millions and prices are a lot higher buying on app rather then directly from the store and delivery and service charges push the prices up more. I feel the least they could do would be to compensate and apologise people for any missing orders or items or wrong or late orders.
AIBU for thinking these companies are wrong to rip people off? Was it my own fault for continuing to use them knowing the risks?

Op is there a reason why you can't use eg Ocado or Waitrose? There's the occasional substitution or item missing but customer service always very good.

My DH has used Morrison at Amazon a few times with no issues.

Citrusandginger · 25/03/2024 08:44

I live in a rural area but luckily not far enough from the nearest town that supermarkets deliver so I’m not sure if Amazon will do it in my area but I’ll check now.

I'm not sure that I've understood what you mean here, but I live rurally and all of the major supermarkets deliver. Are you sure there are no options?

You sound like you have a lot to manage OP and that the mental load is making it harder. Could you set up regular deliveries for pet food through Amazon or pets at home so that you don't run out?

Rosscameasdoody · 25/03/2024 09:38

OP, have you got the Deliveroo app ? Like you I’m disabled and usually do a weekly delivery shop with one of the major supermarkets, but I can’t just pop out for something I’ve forgotten or need before the weekly shop, so I’ve found Deliveroo really convenient. It’s more expensive, but Sainsbury’s in particular have a section you can shop from and pay in store prices. Do you have Amazon Prime - if so, you can get free delivery on Deliveroo.

I have had the same issues with Deliveroo in terms of items not being delivered and have always had a refund. You need to download the app. You take a photo of the receipt and the delivery bags, go on the app and click on the order - you then have the option to report problems. Click on the missing items and upload the photos to Deliveroo - the refund comes through in a couple of minutes and shows as a credit on your account. Uber Eats are the same. I’ve also had issues with Deliveroo delivering cheaper items than the ones paid for - a couple of weeks ago I ordered pint cans of beer and they delivered the standard size, and they delivered cheaper thin cut ‘sandwich steaks’ instead of the ones I’d paid for. I reported those via the app and was refunded for the whole item, not just the difference. That said, if I had had the experience you have, I wouldn’t use them again either.

As an alternative can I suggest that if you have an online Amazon account, you can order same day groceries from Morrisons via that - they offer two hour delivery slots throughout the day. Also Iceland offer same day delivery, and it’s often free. I use them quite a lot for my main shop because they always seem to have good offers on things I use. Asda also offer a quickie delivery service but I wouldn’t really recommend it as my experience with them hasn’t been that good. They use Uber drivers and tend to cancel orders at very short notice if they can’t find anyone to deliver. Their delivery charge is also extortionate IMO - £8.50. Have a look online at your options, and if it were me, I would try to find the email address for Deliveroo corporate and make a complaint via that - mention that you are disabled and feel as though the way you have been treated is unfair.

I've had similarly bad service with the express service that asda offer. They use uber and £8.50 for same day delivery isn't too bad in an emergency but not when whole bags of shopping go missing.

Does anyone know if the morrisons via amazon delivery service arrives in crates or bags? I can't bend down to unpack a crate at the door at the moment but could drag a cpl of bags indoors and then unpack (on my knees!).

The Morrisons shop via Amazon arrives in strong paper sacks. There are no handles on them so you need to grip the tops to lift. They tend to use a lot of bags and don’t overpack them, so you should be fine.

Ariela · 25/03/2024 09:43

Do you have a local WhatsApp group you can shout out for assistance with things you missed? We're a few miles from the supermarket but our group (about 20 houses or thereabouts, also includes now grown up moved away kids who are very helpful as they seem to always be popping back via the shops anyway) is great for 'anyone going to the village can pick me up xyz or anyone got any sugar they can let me have till I get my order from Sainsburys' type questions. Almost always is someone able to help.

DyslexicPoster · 25/03/2024 14:24

Could you not do multiple main supermarket deliveries in the week? So book two slots and just cancel if you don't need them? I do tesco flexi saver for £1.50 a slot. I'm semi rural too so can't get delivered, ubet eats etc at all bit they dodgy AF. I always order more than I need then readjust as needed on the next order

It's nothing to do with Deliveroo the items that are packed. The shop workers do that. Drivers pick up the order ready bagged so hardly can be blamed for the substitute items

At no point did I say the drivers are responsible for the errors but Deliveroo, as the agent, most certainly are. There is no direct contact between the Deliveroo customer and the supermarket - everything is done via the app/website, including the reporting of errors/missing items and any refunds.

But the things like the wrong sized cans are a sho issue. If you put an order in for a certain size then that's what should be packed. If the order shows what you ordered then the shop gets same list. If they then choose to deliver something different then you can't blame the app lol

Only just picked up on this from ages ago. And you absolutely can blame Deliveroo for wrong items delivered. Not the drivers fault- I agree they are just the delivery agents but the contract is between the customer and Deliveroo, not the customer and the supermarket.

Tried iceland recently and was impressed. One in my area seems to have delivery slots for same day or next morning regularly

BethBynnag86 · 17/08/2025 22:10

With Morrisons through Amazon Fresh they'll tell you when the shopper has started on your order and you'll sometimes get a text if something is out of stock, offering an alternative .The shopping bags are sturdy and everything is delivered by a courier in a private car.I've had absolutely no issues with them.

Amazon Fresh is also very good and chilled/frozen goods come in similar heavy, lined paper bags with cool packs for chilled and frozen items.I keep the cool packs for packing the chest freezer and use them again in picnic cool bags

PullTheBricksDown · 17/08/2025 22:12

If Morrisons deliver in your area, I would consider a delivery pass. They are I think £8 a month for as many deliveries as you want, and you can almost always book one for the next day if you can be flexible about the slot. You do need to order £25 minimum but if you could make it up with long lasting things you'll always use like washing powder, drinks etc then it would work out OK. Their deliveries are very reliable.
