To think cars should have all heated windows

I was out scraping my car at the crack of dawn. I've got a heated front windscreen, but what's the point when I've still got to scrape the side windows. I think someone should make a car that all the windows are heated!

I eventually did the truck with the ziploc bag and warm water and that was quicker, but I'd much rather press a couple of buttons while I sit in the car!

Only on a road though!

A driveway can be classed as a road.

I love my car but it doesn’t have heated anything. I would bloody love heated seats. Didn’t even know a heated steering wheel was a thing!

I was dismissive about heated steering wheels until I got one. Heaven!

Cotswoldbee · 17/01/2024 16:58

OH has had a heated windscreen on his Land Rover for well over 20yrs, was a (rarely specified) option which he (sensibly) took up.
In fact, Land Rover offered heated front windscreens from the 1960's onwards for cold weather environments so nothing new under the sun.

Side windows can be heated (and it has been done) but like everything, it is cost, complexity and having a sufficient power supply for all those heating elements.
Also, there is no getting away from it that the elements are visible (depending on lighting conditions) and there will always be those that don't get on with them.

And illegal.

@OneMoreTime23

yrah, but she'd said she knew that, so I ignored that point. Her risk. If I was her neighbour & she was waking me up everyday with her selfish & illegal idling I'd report her to the council/police.

Happy to report I have bought heated seats (well, seat covers Grin) from Lidl. I think they cost £20 and are very effective!

Potato up the exhaust under cover of darkness. ;)

I never really understand all this stuff. If you chuck a blanket or large towel over your windscreen you get zero ice. You can cover side windows too quite easily.

These things require no fuel/energy to heat the car and take less time too.....

That requires carrying at least one clean and dry car cover with you at all times, today I would have needed four.

Jovacknockowitch · 17/01/2024 17:27

You can buy a heated cover for your steering wheel ......

JemimaTiggywinkles · 17/01/2024 17:33

From the highway code:

You MUST NOT leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running or leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road.

Running the engine to clear a windscreen is not in any way "unnecessary". In fact, driving off while the windscreen is covered in ice or mist is (rightly) illegal. Whilst ice can be cleared with a scraper, the engine needs to be warm enough to keep mist from forming while you are driving. That takes a couple of minutes.

Yes, but a normal house driveway is never classed as a road. I’ll idle my car on my drive all day long if choose.

Also note that your post refers to the Highway Code and not the law itself.

Miss my Ford and its heated windscreen, was 20 years ago I had it. It also meant it didn’t mist up once the ice came off. Jump in, turn on the melty buttons and then the wipers and off you go. The only bad feature was the aluminium gear stick ball, it was painful to touch due to how cold my car could be. When they gave me a demo Mondeo ST 220 it had heated leather seats too….sigh!

Caspianberg · 17/01/2024 18:03

An electric car engine isn’t even on to heat the car. You can just turn the heating on to thaw car from app remotely. It doesn’t start the engine, and the car remains locked. There’s no noise and no fumes.
Ours is kept in our open garage so windscreen fine , but I still pre warm in this weather. It’s -14 outside where I live and I have toddler in putting in car ( without coat obviously), so it makes sense. The car pre warm doesn’t drain battery at all.

My 7 year old Vauxhall Corsa has a heated front window screen, heated seats and best of all, a heated steering wheel. I’m not replacing it any time soon as newer models don’t have the heated steering wheel.

Ooh this is good to know. I'm on the hunt for a 'new' car but heated seats and steering are a must for me. I'll make sure I extend the age of car as I've noticed this about the newer corsas as well

Mothership4two · 17/01/2024 19:30

My lovely Polo is not a weird Chinese knockoff you cheeky monkey

Just looked up Polo specs and they don't have heated windscreens not even in the brand new models.

My Dad had heated seats in his Volvo back in the 80s

@Mothership4two i think the point was more that your Polo isn’t a Ford 🙂 (polos are Volkswagen)

For all those who want/miss heated car seats

Aldi and Lidl have had them in too, and I saw a link to B&M. But... heated steering wheel cover?? Don't they have to fit perfectly otherwise you end up spinning the wheel around like on a bank vault door?

EDIT - nvm, you warm it up, take it off. Makes more sense 😂 Thought it was like the seat covers.

Ford have filed a patent for heated side windows so it might be coming soon! Of course they had the original (now lapsed) patent on the front windshield, which I think is the same system used by Land Rover. My mum’s VW has one but it’s not as good as the one in my LR.

I looked the new Ford patent up. It's for EVs and not only for heated side windows, using infrared, but heated windscreen wipers. Genius!

Heated windscreen wipers are already available. You don’t have to wait for Ford to offer them. I know some Volvos have them.

You really should let the engine do the work and get warm to defrost the screen (EV owners can just watch their battery flatten). That way when you set off you stay clear and safe.

Quite depressing the number of cars I see that have cleared scraped the ice off and then immediately set off and the screen is refreezing.

To answer the OP, there are lots of features cars "could" have, if the market is willing to pay for them. But a feature that might only see use 10 days in a year is unlikely to be one of them. Well, not until they can find a way of getting you to pay a subscription for it.

My EV might go down 1% defrosting the car, barely noticed.
