To think cars should have all heated windows

I was out scraping my car at the crack of dawn. I've got a heated front windscreen, but what's the point when I've still got to scrape the side windows. I think someone should make a car that all the windows are heated!

I eventually did the truck with the ziploc bag and warm water and that was quicker, but I'd much rather press a couple of buttons while I sit in the car!

Ford have filed a patent for heated side windows so it might be coming soon! Of course they had the original (now lapsed) patent on the front windshield, which I think is the same system used by Land Rover. My mum’s VW has one but it’s not as good as the one in my LR.

I'd be in the queue to buy one! Good to know I'm not imagining the impossible!

My Ford has a heated windscreen and I was very good last night and covered the windscreen unfortunately I can't have done it right because at 5.30 this morning the bloody cover thing was frozen to the screen. I now have bits of plastic sheeting all over my garden and I was frozen and late for work. The heated screen did a good job though.

Bubbles254 · 17/01/2024 14:26

The only reason I bought my ford mondeo was due to heated front and rear windows, heated seats and best of all a heated steering wheel.

Plenty of features are technically feasible but aren't included on most cars for cost reasons. I rented a Mercedes van 20+ years ago that had a diesel heater (a heater fuelled by burning a small amount of fuel, separate from the engine and usable without starting the ignition) which could be activated using a button on the remote control. Never seen it on another vehicle since, but it was a great thing to have in the winter and not particularly high tech or difficult to implement.

the instruction manual for my 2010 diesel Ford SMax mentioned this but it wasn't one of the things I'd opted for.

You have a Ford. I still miss my Fiesta on frosty days.

I had a heated windscreen in a previous car (Ford) which was great but I remember it had wiggly lines all over it which was a bit irritating (I am easily irritated) - is this still the case with newer cars?

Yes.

@Snoopsteandcooper @Mothership4two was this post written in the last century?? some of the answers are really weird. does every car nowadays not have front and rear screen hearing built in?? what kind of car does not have a heated windscreen??

My current car is a Ford Polo that is a couple of years old and no it does not have a heated front windscreen.

Mothership4two · 17/01/2024 15:23

My current car is a Ford @WagWoofWalkMeeoow! It's a Polo and I was surprised when I bought it that there wasn't a heated windscreen. My last two cars a Ford Mondeo Estate and a VW Touran were heated and de-iced really quickly.

Other than this annoying detail, I love my Polo though!

Jovacknockowitch · 17/01/2024 15:26

Ford Polos - eh?

Must be one of those weird Chinese knockoffs that you see pictures of.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 17/01/2024 15:58

Trouble is that if Ford do bring out heated side windows you won't be able to get them in a fiesta, focus, Mondeo or any other actually good Fords that you might want to buy. My Fiesta and I have entered in to an agreement that she is simply not permitted to die.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 17/01/2024 16:01

We currently have a Quashqai and Jesus Christ I have never known a car to take as long to heat up on a cold day. Zero chance of heated windscreen actually ever getting warm enough to melt the ice.

And now the bloody key fob for the keyless ignition was plays silly fuckers with me when left in car while I scrape. I think the extreme cold measles it stop reading the signal so I get the "No Key detected " message.

Sorry to derail OP but god yes I agree and also miss my old focus at times Grin

Futb0l · 17/01/2024 11:27

I never really understand all this stuff. If you chuck a blanket or large towel over your windscreen you get zero ice. You can cover side windows too quite easily.

These things require no fuel/energy to heat the car and take less time too.....

Seriously thick question here but hey ho ... if I put a towel on my windscreen when it gets dark but there is any moisture on wind seen already will the towel stick?!!

Mothership4two · 17/01/2024 16:04

@OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea my old Ford Mondeo had a heated windscreen

Mothership4two · 17/01/2024 16:06

Towels/blankets sometimes blow off @tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz I use a cover that is weighted down with magnets and covers part of the front side windows as well - went I remember to put it on that is!

Good point
And results in sopping wet towel too

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 17/01/2024 16:11

Marvellous aren't the mothership. I was referring to the fact they don't make fiesta, Mondeo etc any more so if they bring out heated side windows it will be on all the newer electric cars and not the lovely fiestas of the world.

TinkerTiger · 17/01/2024 16:11

I wish I had a heated windscreen 😞

Although turning on the rear one does defrost the wing mirrors too, so that’s a minor blessing

Was this post written under a rock? How can you not understand that the features of a car depend on age, brand, model and price? My 13 year old Peugeot 308 does not have a heated windscreen, nor does the 3 year old Vauxhall Corsa that my friend just bought, HTH.

My 7 year old Vauxhall Corsa has a heated front window screen, heated seats and best of all, a heated steering wheel. I’m not replacing it any time soon as newer models don’t have the heated steering wheel.

I’m assuming that the PP’s getting confused between a heated windscreen and the defrost setting on the HVAC. Most new cars don’t have heated windscreens even now.

@Whatevershallidowithmylife

it's not a necessity

ignoring the impact on the environment is disgusting

not to mention it's fucking annoying.

And illegal.

Only on a road though!

Somatosensational · 17/01/2024 16:56

I love my car but it doesn’t have heated anything. I would bloody love heated seats. Didn’t even know a heated steering wheel was a thing!
