To ask if Donald Trump could actually be president again?

I've just seen a headline about him now being the front runner for the Republican nomination. Which I assume means it's entirely a possibility that he could then win.

I'm British (English) so I know our current government is a complete embarrassment. But I will never get my head around DT having been president once never mind possibly twice.

How could this happen??

Your absolutely right @LifeExperience but the Russian presidency is also limited to no more than two consecutive six year terms in their constitution!

Trump had a relationship with Putin and he was also strong enough to stand up to him (he is on record saying he would nuke Russia if they invaded). Ukraine was invaded around a year after Biden's inauguration. In my view this is no conincidence - Putin viewed Biden as weak. Biden's response to the growing threat in Ukraine then really was weak (he ignored it when he should have been acting as a diplomat and then committed to bringing ukraine into nato which was effectively the spark that started the current conflict). The US / Russian diplomatic relationship was much stronger when Trump was in power and I don't think he would have allowed that to happen (not the joining nato - all of the west is in support of that I think including Trump, but they way in which it was dealt with) also his relationship with kim jong un shows he is able to forge relationships.

The Russian situation is very frightening and needs real diplomatic intervention. I agree with sanctions but in the background the west (and predominantly america) should be seeking to resolve this conflict by diplomatic means. That is not going to be Biden - he doesn't know what day it is.

Im genuinely not a supporter of trump overall but i believe that there would have been no war in Ukraine if he had been potus and that ukraine would now be a member of nato or on the way to be without conflict.

Trump certainly had a 'relationship with Putin' which has previously led to him praising and supporting the man and his methods.

Yank here. It's very early days in the election. In 2016, a bloke named Ted Cruise won the Republican Iowa primary. You've probably never heard of him because he went on to lose everywhere else.

Was it a similar landslide?

I guess we’ll see what the other states bring

I keep seeing this ridiculous extreme left trope all over the place - it’s ridiculous both in the US and UK contexts - in both nations the Overton window has shifted waaaaay to the right in the last 30 years

Biden and Starmer are very moderate and centrist.

Sanders and Corbyn were actually left wing and the Dems and Labour hated them for it.

LifeExperience · 16/01/2024 13:39

@Mothership4two The US is not Russia. Read about the process for changing the Constitution. It will not happen.

Mothership4two · 16/01/2024 13:40

Except it isn't, it is/will be a global problem.

A more powerful "enemy" allied with China another US "enemy" would have quite a meaningful effect on the US.

FrannieSaid · 16/01/2024 13:42

Trump won't win.

I'm in the US - the SOUTH, no less, and a lot of UK posters have absolutely no idea how reviled he is.

Mainstream media gets hits covering everything Trump, and leaves out a lot of Biden wins, so that's what y'all see - especially in rags like the Daily Mail.

Biden's a seasoned and savvy politician who has accomplished a TON. He waded into an absolute Augean stable of crap left by Trump, and still managed the best pandemic economy recovery in the world, some student loan forgiveness, the most aggressive climate and environmental act in our history, infrastructure and small business acts, low unemployment, better care for veterans, and there are fewer border crossing than there were under Trump. And this is with a Republican House full of literal idiots and fascists. For anyone inclined to question his mental acuity, because of his stutter, I'd like to see you take on the level of global responsibility this man bears for five minutes. Y'all are in knots over "domestic admin" half the time.

You may not see it, but the American people do. You just get to see the loud, dumb MAGA jerks in the news. We're not all like that, and the GOTV movement is RAMPED UP.

Trump won't win.

I just can't belive that there is nobody else other than Trump and Biden.

Actually there are plenty, but few of those with sense and integrity are prepared to go anywhere near politics and it's hard to blame them

I have numerous friends in the US - democrats included - sending links about exactly what kind of a banana republic it turned itself into trying to keep Trump out last time, and now they're trying it again when the sensible thing to have done would be to pick a candidate with a major chance of beating him

I agreed with you. I DID say you were right! But was just showing that things can be bent. Several years ago the Russian people probably said that no-one could go on for more than two terms in their country either.

How could this happen??

Because enough people want to vote for him?

So many insane people in one place.

tinkertee · 16/01/2024 13:33

Well they had Regan and Ukraine has Zelenskyy so it's not out of the bounds of possibility!

Kiefer is Canadian and was born in the UK so it's not possible since you have to be a natural born citizen to be the president.

thenicelist · 16/01/2024 13:45

Why?? He's very isolationist. He very likely won't get involved in wars or foreign affairs in any real way. He'll likely say and do things which offend a great many people and that's about it.

What are you scared of?

@Golden407 yes - Trump refuses to get involved and the US drops out of NATO and suddenly Putin and Xi JinPing can act with impunity. Trump will tell Zelenskyy to do a deal with Putin. Kiev will fall, the nation of Ukraine will be destroyed and next Putin will turn to the other Baltic states of Europe to invade next. Watch out Moldova, Poland, Finland.. Without the US upholding democracy China will invade Taiwan, and that's just for starters.

Cue a far more dangerous world. Other dictators look on with glee. The world order falls, and from our perspective the continent of Europe is at even greater risk. HTH.

AlLumi · 16/01/2024 13:46

I'm very, very worried about a second Trump presidency. The whole world should be.

He will not repeat the mistakes of the first time. This time, he'll hit the ground running with ONLY yes men and women doing his bidding. There will be no experienced government hands keeping a semblance of control over his excesses. Every appointee will be Trumpist. Not one person will say no to him this time.

He will take apart American democracy. We have no God-given right to stability and he WILL destabilise the entire planet. It CAN and WILL happen in America if he wins another term.

The only hope is that the military are independent of the president, for now.

Trump is a fascist. He will be a dictator. The norms will vanish. He'll burn everything.

I'm paraphrasing a famous quote, but basically, "when fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and waving a bible."

I have family in America and my work has been there for years. I'm genuinely terrified for a future Trump presidency.

I can't fathom why

  1. America doesn't have an upper age limit on presidents

  2. why someone found guilty of fraud is allowed to be president

  3. why America is so batshit crazy!

My thoughts exactly!

Ah but apparently that argument can't stand though, you know the 'I can't be racist because my best friend is a POC. Biden is racist, senile and he and his family are a bunch of influence peddling crooks.

I’d be interested to know how Biden is racist. I don’t think he’s a particularly effective president as his ability to govern - and to represent his government well - seems to have been negatively affected by him ageing quickly since he became president, which also seems to have affected his stamina and energy levels. I don’t agree that he’s racist though. Do you have any examples of when he has been racist?

meemawww · 16/01/2024 13:48

I am going to say something slightly against the grain here but I fully believe that Putin wouldn't have invaded Ukraine had Trump still been in the White House. Because he looked over towards the USA and thought that crazy orange bastard might just out crazy me.....

Doteycat · 16/01/2024 13:50

The ignorance on this thread is astounding.
Proof of why so many ignorant Americans vote for trump right here.
Anyone who thinks trump won't destroy democracy is beyond saving.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 16/01/2024 09:06

This is the biggest mystery for me as well.

Both the Democrats and the Republicans have had 4 years to find someone and have failed. It's gobsmacking

Maybe read up on that.

Isthisreasonable · 16/01/2024 13:51

If the orange Putin gets in, the only way he's leaving the White House is in a box.

hogmanayhoolie · 16/01/2024 13:53

The choice is woeful but I struggle to believe anyone with a functioning brain and moral compass would vote for that despicable man. I thought the last time was a blip, a sick joke that went too far.

I remember when he lost before some American (the kind with a great great granny from Kilmarnock) on a Scots based FB group got a rude awakening when his lamenting was rightfully lambasted.

I don't like Janey Godley much but her protest sign a few years ago summed up trump

Well it's not against the grain as others have said it

However Russia attacked and has occupied Ukraine since 2014. I didn't see the vile midget withdraw from Ukraine when trump got in.
