To ask if Donald Trump could actually be president again?

I've just seen a headline about him now being the front runner for the Republican nomination. Which I assume means it's entirely a possibility that he could then win.

I'm British (English) so I know our current government is a complete embarrassment. But I will never get my head around DT having been president once never mind possibly twice.

How could this happen??

Blame the Democrats. First Hilary and now Biden. Just awful. Open goal for Trump.

Can you explain the whole MAGA thing? Again? When is it that you see as the time America was great and when did it become not great? What things made it great? Why did they end? How would they be reintroduced?
It seems to me just a slogan with no substance.

Ramaswamy is as terrifying as Trump. Another one who would lead us to WW3.

By NOT standing up to russia. Not standing up to them is the path to WW3

I...what?! Where on earth are you getting this from?

I don't understand your view that Russia didn't invade Ukraine, or that Trump wouldn't have allowed it. Of course he would. And he's come out and said he's in support of this invasion:

4 things to remember about Trump, Ukraine and Putin | CNN Politics

The Russian invasion of Ukraine didn’t just happen out of nowhere.

I am happy to bet that after KS first term people in the U.K. people would be as disappointed as they are with Biden.

Both of whom are better than Trump. He’s sexually assaulted women and then bragged about it, he’s kept classified documents in his toilet at home. I could go on but I don’t need to. We all know my 11 year old could do a better job than that oversized toddler.

That doesn’t mean the Tories are or would be better.

I have zero time for Trump but he’s probably the least bad option, especially if he has a normie running mate. There were no new wars on his watch and the global economy improved.

This ‘no new wars’ thing is bonkers, you must see that? It’s purely coincidence - and the fact the world was dealing with a pandemic for a chunk of it. Which wars don’t you think would have happened if Trump had won a second term? (Don’t say Ukraine, it was already happening in Donbas while he was president).

You mean as opposed to showering with his own daughter and keeping classified documents that as VP he was not allowed to take, in his open garage?

Violinist64 · 16/01/2024 12:43

He’s just had a landslide win in Iowa so I wouldn’t put it past him. He’s a criminal - can’t American voters see that? I don’t rate either candidate. As previous posters have said, why can’t there be someone younger - early fifties would be ideal - rather than two men who appear to be in different stages of dementia? Our own lot, both main parties, are an absolute shambles but appear almost competent in comparison.

Sleepydoor · 16/01/2024 12:46

Ramaswamy is more interested in being famous than being a politician. He doesn't have the experience or knowledge necessary to be a politician but he has all the bravado and arrogance. If that's being a true MAGA, that's frightening.

cardibach · 16/01/2024 12:47

zoom1982 · 16/01/2024 12:32

Meantime Joe Biden's very close friend was none other than Robert Byrd,as in Ku Klux Klan. Biden is as racist as they come always has been and always will be.

That wasn’t the question I was answering.
However, I tend to judge by a person’s own actions, not those of their friends.

Well, yes.
Im anti the whole thing.
But people claim MAGA without defining anything. I was wondering if @HoarHouse could clarify at least that part.

Disappointed? Probably.
Still aware things went better than they would have under the Tories? Definitely.

Did Trump not effectively tie up the Senate when someone died just before he left power making it difficult for Biden to do much

I don't understand US politics I can't remember the details but I do remember something

SweetBirdsong · 16/01/2024 12:53

I think he will. Sadly. He has so many horrible qualities. But then again, you may as well have a cucumber in the White House rather than Biden. I often forget he is President. He has no presence or charisma at all, and doesn't seem to know what he is doing half the time.

Stringagal · 16/01/2024 12:57

RitzyMcFee · 16/01/2024 09:04

This is what i don't understand. They have had years to find someone.

I had a theory that Biden would step aside for Kamala Harris, but it doesn’t look like he’s going to. The thought of Trump getting back in is as terrifying as Truss or Johnson getting a second go.

McSteamyorMcdreamy · 16/01/2024 12:57

Has anyone asked if Kiefer Sutherland is available??!

Seriously, he would do a much better job than either of them!!!

He appointed his own judges to the Supreme Court, tipping the balance in favour of the hard right.

I don't think he did anything in the Senate but I am no expert on US politics so am prepared to be corrected!

Well, that’s bollocks. Putin would love a Trump
win, as that would fulfil all his desires. Not only would Russia have invaded Ukraine if Trump won, but they’d probably be in Kiev now

So why Putin did not invade Ukraine on Trumps leadership?

Edited

They didn't withdraw during trumps reign either.

Shame he didn't use his statesmanship to get his pal Putin to withdraw from Ukraine.

How odd that he picked a person of colour as his second in command, then. He also worked very harmoniously with Obama. (He’s the one that needs bringing back, or Michelle.)

Trump had a relationship with Putin and he was also strong enough to stand up to him (he is on record saying he would nuke Russia if they invaded). Ukraine was invaded around a year after Biden's inauguration. In my view this is no conincidence - Putin viewed Biden as weak. Biden's response to the growing threat in Ukraine then really was weak (he ignored it when he should have been acting as a diplomat and then committed to bringing ukraine into nato which was effectively the spark that started the current conflict). The US / Russian diplomatic relationship was much stronger when Trump was in power and I don't think he would have allowed that to happen (not the joining nato - all of the west is in support of that I think including Trump, but they way in which it was dealt with) also his relationship with kim jong un shows he is able to forge relationships.

The Russian situation is very frightening and needs real diplomatic intervention. I agree with sanctions but in the background the west (and predominantly america) should be seeking to resolve this conflict by diplomatic means. That is not going to be Biden - he doesn't know what day it is.

Im genuinely not a supporter of trump overall but i believe that there would have been no war in Ukraine if he had been potus and that ukraine would now be a member of nato or on the way to be without conflict.

Russia invaded in 2014

the80sweregreat · 16/01/2024 13:01

I would put some money on it and Jeremy vine on the radio just now said that even if Donald Trump ends up in prison between now and November, he will still campaign from prison!
No real idea how American politics work, but he seems popular enough and I would not be surprised to see him back in the White House.

Yep - the idea that Trump is anti-war is laughable. I find it incredible that people could still vote for him when he's a criminal with a charge sheet longer than my arm, and has already said he's going to turn the US into a dictatorship. I suppose they think it'll be fine so long as they've got their guns. Turkeys voting for Christmas.
