Do I be honest with friend?

Friend hasn’t registered their baby yet and they decided to call him Bailey.

the grandma and their other child who is a lot older have already said they hate the name. To be honest I don’t like it as well they asked my view and just said not sure. Taken them four weeks to go with any name.

I know it’s a parents choice do I say anything

It me its an animal name known dog and a horse with it. Horse had a sibling called Guinness.

But it must be an actual name or where did Bailies Irish Cream come from?

If they haven't actually registered the name they are possibly still not 100% sure of it. It does sound like they've called their baby after a drink.

It was more traditionally a surname (Will Bailey in the west wing for example). But has more recently become a first name, for both kids and pets. I don't think anyone thinks they're called after the drink, it's just become a popular name.

This. Mind your business if you want to keep the friendship

GreatGateauxsby · 16/01/2024 04:25

Say nothing.

It's not the best but honestly I have heard SO much worse. It's fairly tame/maybe a bit American sounding?

It's certainly no Balonz....

I've become immune to Balonz after 13 years here. I actually don't think i'd bat an eyelid tbh 🫢

GreatGateauxsby · 16/01/2024 04:47

Balonz still makese chuckle to myself.

The other day I met an Octave...
Not an Octavia... An Octave.
Pardon the pun but that has to be up there...

What’s wrong with Bailey? Mind your own business

She was asked for her opinion….

ALonelyRoad · 16/01/2024 05:37

Don't say anything.

milesbyday · 16/01/2024 06:10

It's awful reminds of very other creme little dog owned by an old lady but it's not your place to saying anything.

theduchessofspork · 16/01/2024 06:16

If you’ve said you aren’t sure, they know you don’t like it. You could encourage a more conventional middle name but leave it at that. It’s not that bad.

Zanatdy · 16/01/2024 06:19

It’s a normal name, might not be to others taste but it’s clearly theirs.

SouthEastCoast · 16/01/2024 06:28

Bailey is a good name. My son has a friend called Bailey, absolutely a cool name . Even if it wasn’t a good name I would not say anything. Many of my friends named their kids things I wouldn’t have down and no doubt they wouldn’t have chosen the names I chose but I would have been offended if they had said anything.

and then names grow on people.

Velvian · 16/01/2024 06:51

It's not too bad. The grandmothers should have minded their own business. It could be a lot worse.

pictoosh · 16/01/2024 06:53

Bailey is not outlandish. It doesn't matter if three other people hate it. It's not those three other people's kid.

The pets I've known called Bailey (and Guinness) were definitely after the drinks.

Bailey is a dogs name to me, a family members dog is Bailey (not after the drink). There's not anything wrong with it though for a human name. Much worse names out there, just keep it to yourself if the parents are happy.

HalloumiGeller · 16/01/2024 08:03

Bailey is a pretty normal and common name, not sure why people are hating on it so much

lap90 · 16/01/2024 08:05

You dont need to say anything.

I've heard far worse names.

NotQuiteNorma · 16/01/2024 08:28

MolkosTeenageAngst · 15/01/2024 22:20

Bailey is a completely unremarkable and normal name, I have two friends with sons called Bailey, one 8yo and one in his 20s now. It might not be to your taste and that’s fine, it happens to me all the time that friends/ relatives announce a name for a baby which I would never choose myself, but I’d never say anything. Bailey is not a wildly out there name, if she was calling her child Balonz or Cabbage maybe it would be time to say something but she’s choosing a normal name, even if not to your taste, so certainly no reason to express how you feel about it and upset your friend.

Well it used to be unremarkable until it became a staple among chavs yes. Now it is ridiculously overused and given to girls too. The first Bailey I ever encountered was a dog 20 years ago.

Tell her to call him Amarula Cream instead.

I'd be surprised if there isn't an Amarula out there somewhere...

It wouldn’t be particularly surprising, it means “of the marula tree” in Bantu. The drink takes its name from the tree fruit. Not manifestly different if you’re from a southern African background to being called Cherry or Olive.

Westernesse · 16/01/2024 11:59

You are desperate to say something but don’t. Keep your trap shut.

MaggieNextDoor · 16/01/2024 12:03

My friend's daughter called her new baby Rocket. I didn't say anything at the time, and the little boy gets called Rocky by pretty much everyone, a name he really suits.

Olika · 16/01/2024 12:05
