To ask to be temporarily rehoused whilst new kitchen installed?

I will preface this by saying I KNOW I’m very lucky to have a HA house, and I KNOW I’m very lucky to be getting a brand new kitchen for free.

So as above, I have work commencing on 22nd January to rip out the old kitchen and replace it. I don’t have a choice in this, according to the documents, I am unable to say no it’s fine, I’ll keep the old one. I’ve been told the works will take 2 weeks, as it also involves taking up the tiled floor and replacing it with lino.

It’s just dawning on me what a nightmare this will be. I have to completely empty the kitchen obviously, but there’s not really anywhere to put the stuff, it’s a very small house (just living room leading to kitchen/diner downstairs). The big appliances will go outside in the back yard apparently, but everything else will have to be boxed up and kept somewhere. I’ll have no cooking or washing up facilities, and no way of washing or drying clothes.

That’s all pretty standard I know, but my main concern is that I have a disability (CFS) and also both DC are diagnosed with ASD and currently in the house all the time as neither in education. We will essentially be trapped in our bedrooms for 2 weeks as we won’t be able to move in the front room as realistically that’s the only place everything from the kitchen can go. I need to rest…a lot, and the works will be noisy, which will also affect both DC as they struggle badly with loud noises and not being in a calm environment. They’ll also struggle with a team of workmen being in their space for 2 weeks, They both have completely different food aversions and neither of their limited range of foods is conducive to being able to batch cook and set the microwave up somewhere. Realistically it will mean a lot of eating out, but that’s not really affordable for 2 weeks.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and WIBU to ask the HA if there’s anything that could be done to move us while the works are going on? The only family member I could stay with is my DM but she’s a long way away and having works done on her own house which means she doesn’t have a functioning bathroom, so that’s not ideal really.

Glad you're bearing up OP. Plan something nice and/or look forward to just chilling out at the weekend xx

SENwoes · 02/02/2024 21:38

It’s over! Finished on time and I am so happy with it. Kind of got used to having a house full of workmen, never thought I’d say it but I’ll kind of miss them. This is the kitchen before and after. Still got loads of stuff to put away and will do some accessorising and brightening up, I need a trip to IKEA!

And the dining end. I did have a table before but it was really manky and I gave it away before I took the photo.

It looks fabulous OP. I'm glad it wasn't as dreadful as you thought it might be and hopefully it will have been worth it!

Frasers · 02/02/2024 21:42

Oh I’m so pleased for you op. I suspected it wouldn’t be anywhere near as horrendous as some folks were worrying you with and of course your kitchen and dining room now looks gorgeous, congrats!

SENwoes · 02/02/2024 21:46

Thanks! Was 100% worth it and it ran like clockwork, only slight blip was I decided I hated the colour it was painted so repainted it myself yesterday. Between that and building the bastard ikea cabinet tonight every muscle in my body is on fire and I think I need to sleep for a week 😴

Oh it looks lovely @SENwoes
I think sometimes we build these things up in our mind to be worse than they actually are!
Looks worth it though

Frasers · 02/02/2024 21:49

What colour was it before?

Frasers · 02/02/2024 21:50

And I’m guessing you mean the walls not the cupboards…and the walls are a lovely colour now..

SENwoes · 02/02/2024 21:53

Yep the walls - they said if I got my own paint they’d paint it whatever colour I wanted, initially I was very unadventurous and went for a light grey but it was very depressing in there, so went for light pink instead. I think they thought I was bonkers but I knew if I didn’t change it then it would just stay grey for the next 10 years.

You did a great job painting it looks fab, and the kitty is v cute..

Mamabear2424 · 02/02/2024 22:25

Blimey years ago when our kitchen was done we coped! washed up in the bathroom, cant believe HA get free brand new kitchens, we really need to re do ours but have to save for years !!

SENwoes · 02/02/2024 22:31

@Mamabear2424 as you can tell by the fact I’m still posting, I also coped. And I think you’ll find anyone in a rented house, whether private or HA, doesn’t tend to pay to do major upgrades. That’s the difference between renting a house and owning a house you see, not sure if they made that clear before you signed the mortgage. Another difference is when I die, I won’t have anything to leave my children, but you will.

Ooh congrats @SENwoes . Trendy kitchen and lovely cat. <3

CornishTiger · 02/02/2024 22:36

So much better! And yep they needed to change that pot to non slip flooring.

JenniferBooth · 02/02/2024 22:36

@Mamabear2424 the new fuse box im going to have fitted is will also be perceived as "free" as our current one doesnt have RCD protection as its too old.

JenniferBooth · 02/02/2024 22:39

@Frasers posters could only go by their own past experiences or that of our neighbours.

@SENwoes Im really pleased it worked out well and it looks amazing and your cat is GORGEOUS.

SENwoes · 02/02/2024 22:39

@CornishTiger yep the old floor was deadly! The slightest bit of water and it was like an ice rink, it’s just down to luck that none of us came a cropper (too badly) on it.

the fact you even asked if you can be re homed whilst having a kitchen re done is ludicrous
