To ask to be temporarily rehoused whilst new kitchen installed?

SENwoes · 15/01/2024 03:43

I will preface this by saying I KNOW I’m very lucky to have a HA house, and I KNOW I’m very lucky to be getting a brand new kitchen for free.

So as above, I have work commencing on 22nd January to rip out the old kitchen and replace it. I don’t have a choice in this, according to the documents, I am unable to say no it’s fine, I’ll keep the old one. I’ve been told the works will take 2 weeks, as it also involves taking up the tiled floor and replacing it with lino.

It’s just dawning on me what a nightmare this will be. I have to completely empty the kitchen obviously, but there’s not really anywhere to put the stuff, it’s a very small house (just living room leading to kitchen/diner downstairs). The big appliances will go outside in the back yard apparently, but everything else will have to be boxed up and kept somewhere. I’ll have no cooking or washing up facilities, and no way of washing or drying clothes.

That’s all pretty standard I know, but my main concern is that I have a disability (CFS) and also both DC are diagnosed with ASD and currently in the house all the time as neither in education. We will essentially be trapped in our bedrooms for 2 weeks as we won’t be able to move in the front room as realistically that’s the only place everything from the kitchen can go. I need to rest…a lot, and the works will be noisy, which will also affect both DC as they struggle badly with loud noises and not being in a calm environment. They’ll also struggle with a team of workmen being in their space for 2 weeks, They both have completely different food aversions and neither of their limited range of foods is conducive to being able to batch cook and set the microwave up somewhere. Realistically it will mean a lot of eating out, but that’s not really affordable for 2 weeks.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and WIBU to ask the HA if there’s anything that could be done to move us while the works are going on? The only family member I could stay with is my DM but she’s a long way away and having works done on her own house which means she doesn’t have a functioning bathroom, so that’s not ideal really.

Have you read the thread or even the OP's posts?
Do you not think within 33 pages someone maybe posted that very suggestion.

Apologies. I was responding to a specific post by the OP. But I now see from further posts, no-one wants any advice or opinions that don't involve slagging off the housing authority.

You seem to have all found a gaggle of like minded people who don't like renting off Housing Associations but don't seem to have much of a plan to get yourselves out of the situation where you're renting off such terrible people, so gonna leave you to it.

JenniferBooth · 21/01/2024 22:29

Well @Fallenangelofthenorth the trouble is they think they own the tenants as well as the properties. And thats not a landlord. Thats something else entirely

SENwoes · 21/01/2024 23:12

Trying to get the kitchen clear. I’ve been at it for hours and I’m so tired I feel like I’m having an out of body experience, and really light headed. Still got bloody loads to do and I’ve run out of boxes.

JenniferBooth · 21/01/2024 23:19

@SENwoes What sort of things are left in there Would they help you move the rest tommorrow

SENwoes · 21/01/2024 23:23

Just stuff! All the glasses, plates, cups, utensils, and then just random stuff in other cupboards and drawers, pet stuff, little used kitchen equipment, plastic containers etc etc. I’ve binned so much and packed even more but it is endless!

OP posts:
SENwoes · 21/01/2024 23:24

I doubt they’ll help me…I will get into the loft soon and see if there’s any more boxes.

Be careful Dont overdo it

SENwoes · 22/01/2024 01:48

Bit late for that…going to be suffering tomorrow.

Holy fuckballs it’s amazing how much stuff lurks in kitchen cupboards! But finally finished, ran out of steam so didn’t move airfryers,
microwave etc but I’m sure they can help me with that. I feel like I’m living in one of those hoarder programmes now and there wasn’t a lot of logic put into packing stuff so I’ve no idea where everything is.

Well done though, thats much tidier than my stash (scattered through the bloody house, no idea where anything is at all).

We've also binned a whole load of stuff we didn't use - fondue set anyone? Used once circa 2009!

I think that's just great! Well done!

Surely you wouldn’t be any better in a Travelodge, maybe even in a worse situation.

You have your bedrooms and stuff at yours. You would probably just have 1 bedroom and a bathroom between the three of you in a travelodge.

Could you ask a neighbour to use their washing machine and give them a bit of money to cover electricity?

set up a kettle, small fridge, toaster and microwave in the living room. Not ideal, but will give you a base.

Use paper plates and disposable cups to cut down on washing up.

Mummyoflittledragon · 22/01/2024 03:43

Well done for mustering the strength. I know how hard that will have been.

Fullofxmascbeer · 22/01/2024 09:36

You got there. Yay. Now fingers crossed that you’ll be pleased with the final result.

JenniferBooth · 22/01/2024 11:49

And have they turned up?

Needmorelego · 22/01/2024 11:54

@JenniferBooth I was wondering the same thing.
Fingers crossed it's all going ok @SENwoes
🙂

SENwoes · 22/01/2024 12:20

Morning all, yes they turned up, the storm seems to have blown over here now and it’s a nice sunny day. Two really nice guys from the HA, they’ve been great. Already ripped out the kitchen and the floor tiles, taken off skirting boards and any dodgy bits of plaster. They’ve left me with the sink unit which is great, so I can do washing up and get drinks downstairs. They also got permission from the supervisor to leave all my appliances in the room and work around them, something I was told repeatedly wasn’t possible 🙄. Although none will be usable apart from the fridge until everything is finished. So all in all, so far, so good. I’m so exhausted from yesterday that I even managed to have a snooze of sorts this morning.

OP posts:
JenniferBooth · 22/01/2024 12:23

Really pleased to hear that @SENwoes and glad your appliances can stay where they are

Jellybean85 · 22/01/2024 15:05

Ah thats a lovely positive start op, it will be over before you know it

ArthurChristmas22 · 22/01/2024 18:19

OP I would strongly suggest you have a chat with the HA and preferably the kitchen fitters. Some parts of this will be noisy and disruptive, others will be easier. So, for example, you may be able to time a AirBNB booking to part of the 14days, cheaper and allow you to avoid the worst bits? If they know you are not there, they may also work longer days to get it done? Paper plates is an excellent idea. I survived 18months with just a camping stove (don't ask!). It's all doable, but more difficult with your disabilities. Try and look at it as a little adventure and dream of the finished end product!

Crikeyisthatthetime · 22/01/2024 21:29

Just catching up to see how you're doing, you've done brilliantly getting that lot shifted!
Glad the crew are more reasonable than the admin team have been, hopefully they will do their best to make it easier for you xx

Mrsgreen100 · 25/01/2024 10:17

Contact your housing authority and ask if the work can be rescheduled for summer
it is possible that they could do this
would be plan A

Needmorelego · 25/01/2024 10:22

@Mrsgreen100 - you're a bit late. The work started on Monday.
(Hope it's still going ok @SENwoes )

CharlotteBog · 25/01/2024 10:34

How's it going OP?

Crikeyisthatthetime · 25/01/2024 12:13

I should imagine OP is trying to recover from her amazing efforts at clearing the kitchen.
If you're still here OP, hope it's all going ok x

Yeah, I didn’t read the whole thread as it is 33 pages. Obviously the long walks arent going to happen for someone who is disabled, but you can try and find something else to pass the time whilst the workmen are there. They can work round white goods by moving them when doing the floor.

Edited

Yeah, I didn’t read the whole thread as it is 33 pages.

Yet you still feel entitled to comment despite missing all the context.

As another poster said, it's very simple to view all the OP's posts in a given thread.

You can also set comments to appear a hundred at a time. Then it's only nine pages 😉
