Worried I'll fall through the ceiling if I have a bath

Does anyone else think this?

I weigh 96kg // approx 15 stone

With a bath full of water, which will add a load more weight...

I'm worried I'm going to end up stark naked in the living room downstairs...

Does anyone else get this fear??

@Pinkrubberduck me too! Ever since that episode I’ve had that fear everytime having a bath!

Knackeredmommy · 14/01/2024 11:27

Omg! Me too, I know it's totally irrational but it does put me off. Glad I'm not alone.

snowplacelikehome1 · 14/01/2024 11:27

Yes 😥

Cantfindthewordsddstruggling · 14/01/2024 11:31

as others have said there is no need to worry but if it’s something that would help you relax and enjoy your bath more pop your swimming costume on. Might just help you feel less vulnerable in the bath.

Fangisnotacoward · 14/01/2024 11:34

There was an episode of Corrie where this happened, though this was a hot tub, all the water, two adults and a great Dane that caused it, so I'm sure you'll be grand!

I weigh more than you. I also have an enormous free-standing bath. I've never fallen through the floor yet.
(Some people with this type of tub report even sharing it with a partner - one at each end. I can't think of anything worse).

Yes my bath occasionally makes a creaking noise when I'm in it! I'm not even very big but I fill the bath up very high. I live in a flat too so I would end up in the neighbours bathroom 😂

My mother in law's bath creaks when I get in it. I do have to say I don't quite trust it... But more that it's going to crack than fall through to the downstairs neighbours 🤣

Comedycook · 14/01/2024 11:40

I thought I was the only one who thinks like this....I actually don't have baths for this reason 😂

Paddleboarder · 14/01/2024 11:46

I have thought about that for different reasons. Although I would end up in the hallway up against the front door rather than in the living room! At two different times there has been a leak under the bath that went through to the hall ceiling so I worry that it has been compromised. My bath does creak when I stand in it but I've investigated that and it's because of the wooden baton it rests on.
Water is extremely heavy on its own though, and I'm sure if someone getting in it was a problem it would happen all the time!

DaisyCat33 · 14/01/2024 11:48

Well I didn't have this fear but now I do 😅

2024Hackathon · 14/01/2024 11:50

Is this the opposite end of children's books and the fear that you'll be dragged down the plughole?

I occasionally have this fear as we live in a new build and have already been told the joists in the attic are not strong enough to ever have the attic floored or to store heavy things up there ! Makes me wonder about the strength of the rest of the house to be honest.

An average bath holds about 300 litres of water.
A litre of water weighs approximately 1kg, so say you fill the bath 2/3 full, that would be 200kg plus your own body weight, but I'm guessing and hoping that houses are made to withstand much much much more weight that you could ever really need.

I sometimes think about our massive superking bed and all the bedroom furniture ending up in the living room downstairs too. Sorry to give you a new fear!

But with a 15 stone human in the bath, surely the water capacity would only be around 150 litres, so 150kg for the water, 100kg for the person (15 stone), and still hasnt reached the full capacity?

Im worried about our loft, we've got tons of stuff up there

Purpleandredandyellow · 14/01/2024 11:57

Yes it has occurred to me while I lie there!!

Well I didn't have this fear but now I do 😅

Sorry!!

I'm 93kg at the moment and that thought has never crossed my mind.

snowplacelikehome1 · 14/01/2024 12:10

I also worry about the loft. I worry that I will die under this house one day when if it collapses on me.

The builders that have worked on my house have trashed it and there’s no one available to fix any issues, just the unregulated ones that are out to fleece me/ trash the house further. We just live around the problems.

ThreeLocusts · 14/01/2024 12:25

Shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, people in East Berlin started putting pump-operated showers into their kitchens. These were flats with toilets outside on the landings and no bath tubs (built late 19th century for working class occupants).

Sometimes the pumps wouldn't work properly and water would accumulate in these portable showers. Meanwhile, the floorboards had often seen better days.

There was definitely an urban myth about some of these portable showers crashing through the floorboards. No hard evidence though. I felt a bit adventurous using these showers but then I was a sheltered Westerner.

Interesting that this is a variation on a theme. OP, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

n15pine · 14/01/2024 12:26

A family member of mine keeps gym weights in their loft. They've been up there for about 15 years with no issue but thought of it still makes me shudder 😰

snowplacelikehome1 · 14/01/2024 12:38

😂Your mind works like mine OP - torturous!

Lolliloo1 · 14/01/2024 12:52

Yes! Always just thought it was my strange brain 😂

FindingMeno · 14/01/2024 13:00

Bath thing doesn't bother me, but the thought of the loft contents falling through does!

petticuliar · 14/01/2024 13:07

TeenDivided · 14/01/2024 10:43

The bigger you are the less room for water, so the less overall weight of water.
Given how humans float in water we are about the same density.
So I think it all evens out, so don't worry.

Such a good point!
