I average about 1000 trying to work on it

If I am not making an effort then it can be as low as 5000 (drive to nursery, drive to railway station, sit in office all day). Usually as high as 15,000+ (walk to nursery and back, run 5k at lunchtime, working on sites all day)

if I know I’m going to have a day with a lot of meetings or sitting at my desk then I’ll make the effort to walk to and from the station, which gets an extra couple of miles in.

Menomeno · 14/01/2024 09:20

I always thought I did very few. My DH bought me a Fitbit, and I was really shocked to see that I was doing around 5000 steps just around the house on a bad day. If I go for a walk or go shopping that will easily double.

IlsSortLaPlupartAuNuitMostly · 14/01/2024 09:24

Just under 10,000 on average: there'll be some 2,000 days when I WFH and can't leave the house and some 20,000s when I'm sightseeing on holiday. I'm going to try and make more of an effort to move more on WFH days as the days lengthen.

1,000 is extremely low if you're not disabled so unless you're about to say that you cycle fifty miles a day and swim ten then yes, increasing your activity levels should be a priority.

5,000 around the house sounds a bit high unless you're really running up and down stairs to check on the kids a lot. 1,000 is about ten minutes steady walking, so double check whether that matches up with your Fitbit reading.

Xyyxxx · 14/01/2024 09:30

I'm very fat and very lazy but even I manage 3-5k a day.

stcrispinsday · 14/01/2024 09:31

I make myself do 10k a day. The school run alone is 3500 then I force myself out at lunchtime. If I'm in the office I get to 10k without really trying because it involves a walk at either end.

I don't really get any other chance to exercise so this is non negotiable for me.

Goatinthegarden · 14/01/2024 09:31

I can do anything from 5k to 30k in a day. I am quite an active person though and I track ‘calories burned’ rather than steps as I don’t think all ‘steps’ are equal.

If I cycle to work (20km round trip) then I get no steps for the commute, but obviously I’ve had a bit of a workout. I’ll probably make it to about 8k steps trotting around work as I’m not very good at sitting still and do most of my job standing up.

If I drive to work, I’ll still get around 8k steps, but my calories burned will suggest I’ve hardly moved all day and I need to do some other exercise to get my target.

DH and I walk quite a bit together at the weekend, we can clock 20-30k wandering to a restaurant, doing little errands, etc, but it’s kind of sedate walking around a city, with a sit down for food in the middle of it. We like climbing hills and fell running and that usually equates to far less steps in the same time as a city walk, despite the fact that we’re really sweating and burning calories.

Between 5-10,000 a day on a normal day.

ProfessorplumBilliardroomCandlestick · 14/01/2024 09:33

If I'm WFH with a busy day it used to be normal to average under 1,000 steps in a day - usually I'd get to about 750 maximum. Are you tracking your steps with a watch or a phone? Lots of the watch apps have an "auto" setting on the daily steps goal that increases if you hit the target or stays stable if you don't. I found that very helpful for gradually increasing my steps. For me I found it was very much a habit. I've been working on getting little and often movement, and now it's more usual I finish the day at just over 2,000 steps even if WFH - in my mind I'm not doing anything special it's just I'm more used to moving more, so I do.

Between 5-10,000 a day on a normal day.

I should also note I'm currently on mat leave. So it would be more when I need to travel into the office etc.

MassageForLife · 14/01/2024 09:35

It varies from not very many (but difficult to quantify as I don't have a Fitbit or similar and I don't carry my phone around the house) to 25,000+.

On a working day it's usually at least 12,000.

Cnidarian · 14/01/2024 09:38

I can easily do <1000 in a day, there is very little opportunity to walk in my normal life. School and nursery too far to walk in time to get to work, desk based job either in office (have to drive) or home. Lunch is usually at desk to fit in hours. Dinner bath and bed after work, fit in some yoga classes where possible. There isn't really anywhere nice to walk from my house, it's very car based. Big part of criteria for current house move is changing this as it will make everyone happier and healthier, but there are plenty of people who don't have the set up for this to come naturally. The 15 minute city and better green space access is so vital to health!

29andLost · 14/01/2024 09:39

Around 25k - retail job so I'm always on the go

ColettesEarrings · 14/01/2024 09:40

I normally get about 11-12k in with the short walk to work and back and a job that has me on my feet and back and forth all day. I go for a deliberate fast walk every lunchtime for 20 mins which gets another 2.5+k. Bobbing around the house usually takes me to an average of 15k easily on weekdays. Weekends we try and do a long 2hr walk both days, plus walking everywhere else anyway (I don't drive). Usually meet 15-18k on weekends.

Ragwort · 14/01/2024 09:42

I can only track on my phone which isn't always with me but I track about 7k most days so hopefully a few more steps around the house ... but I can do and should do more Blush.

hydriotaphia · 14/01/2024 09:43

It really depends. It's around 13k if I drop my DC off at school and then get the tube into work, plus leave the office for lunch, but less than 500 if I work at home and am too busy to leave the house.

Snackpocket · 14/01/2024 09:46

Average about 7k. WFH 3 days a week so do less then, more on office days and then a lot more at the weekend.

Ilovechocolatetoomuch · 14/01/2024 09:47

So 3000 is about a mile and a half according to Google. I do this twice a day on the school run.

If I’m just at home then I usually only do 2000 maximum as even in quite a big house and me pottering round all day it doesn’t ever seem to add up to much.

Menomeno · 14/01/2024 09:47

I’m easily on my feet round the house for over two hours a day, cleaning, cooking, pottering in the garden so it sounds about right.

curiousierandcouriser · 14/01/2024 09:55

On the weekends, I get 10,000-15,000 / day depending on what we're doing. When I'm working I get 18,000 - 25,000.

DominoRules · 14/01/2024 09:57

I average about 22k during the week - solely due to the dog! A friend and I set ourselves a target last summer of 10k by 10am so we set off about 8.30am for a brisk walk (both have active young dogs). I walk mine again in the afternoon so I reckon my walks are 17/18k then the rest general pottering at home.

Weekends generally less as I will only go on one walk with DH too and he does the second walk on his own.

I haven’t noticed a change in my weight but I’m definitely fitter and more toned.

LegoTherapy · 14/01/2024 10:01

Friday was less because I went back to bed due to being unwell. Today will be very little because I'm still unwell. I don't drive so walk most places.

mondaytosunday · 14/01/2024 10:10

4000-6000. If I put more effort into it 8000. Today it will be under 1000 though as do not plan on leaving the house!
10,000 is a made up number - there's no magic to it. But 1000 is low. I think I read recently that 4000 minimum is desirable. Try to increase just a bit at a time, worked into your daily routine.
