To want shade at the Olympics

herewegoroundtheblueberrybush · 13/01/2024 19:03

So we have various tickets for the Paris Olympics this summer but I am really scared of being trapped in places with no shade, especially with kids. I get sunstroke very easily.

Does anyone know what kind of provision there will be?

For example, we have tickets for Roland garros but from what I can see most of the seats will be in the sun for much of the day.

Thanks for any info!

Are you allowed to bring a parasol?

mouseychick · 13/01/2024 19:06

And who is Roland Garros?

Serencwtch · 13/01/2024 19:13

Wide brimmed sun hat & sunglasses.

And who is Roland Garros?

😂😂😂😂

NoMoreXmasTree · 13/01/2024 19:16

It's the name of their tennis championship ground, the French Wimbledon

PurpleChrayne · 13/01/2024 19:19

I thought you meant shade as in, like, bitchy arguments between competitors 😆

Would it not make sense to clarify with the organisers what provision they are making, and what it permitted for you to take to help you? For example if you are permitted to bring umbrellas/parasols, fans, wide brimmed hats, fans, and they provide free access to water.

That's a very sensible suggestion 😅 I will try.

lol to the Roland and the "shade" comments

I can't see parasols being allowed it would bd chaos if everyone had a parasol! No one would be able to see and it would be dangerous.

Hats sure but that's aren't enough for me. I'll try to get in touch to ask but I'm thinking I may need to sell my daytime tickets

Clothes are often the best sunscreen. Wear long sleeves, and trousers, or a skirt long enough to cover your legs, sitting down. A big hat, that also shades the back of your neck. Sunscreen. Take lots of water - you will need around 2 litres per person. (Obviously you will be able to buy water, or refill bottles, but it doesn’t hurt to have plenty to start with.)

CornishPorsche · 13/01/2024 20:54

You say hats aren't enough - have you looked at a proper wide brimmed or draping hat with inbuilt SPF? I wear a huge woven floppy hat which has 50 SPF

I also live in wrap around Migralens sunglasses as I have chronic migraine. Alternatively, full polarised lenses do help.

CMOTDibbler · 13/01/2024 21:07

I'd get one of the Solbari hats- I have one and it is enormous and really good. As I am very sun sensitive I make sure to be fully covered, with the solbari sleeves or a Uniqlo spf hoodie ensuring even my hands are covered. Wear a hat and sunglasses from before you think it's sunny, and water with hydration salts in.
I'm volunteering at the olympics and paralympics so will be outside for my full shifts, but I managed at the commonwealth games to not get burnt or faint doing this (obv could only wear uniform cap!)

Roland Garros had nothing to do with tennis he was WWI fighter ace, he was a total hero to the French, and when the stadium was built in the 1920s, they called it after him.

ArcticBells · 13/01/2024 21:11

Wear a hat

I knew it sounded like a person's name. It was!

BIWO · 14/01/2024 09:07

I would take hats and sun glasses. Not been to Roland Garros but been to Wimbledon and Wembley, where if you get certain seat positions you are in the direct sun and it can be very unpleasant.

Housebuyer37 · 14/01/2024 09:18

I've been to Roland Garros a few times and yes you are in direct sun most of the time when are you are watching the tennis. There is plenty of shade away from the courts but obviously you miss the tennis then.

You need a wide brimmed hat, high factor sun cream and loose fitting clothes that cover your skin. There are water fountains everywhere so take a refillable bottle and keep topped up.

If you start to feel too hot, step out when there is a break for a breather. You won't be allowed in until there's another break so will miss a few games but tennis matches can be long and you may need to get out the sun.

Did you not think of this ahead of applying?

In my experience there will be some provision but it will be limited and certainly they aren't going to put a roof on existing open air venues.

DisforDarkChocolate · 14/01/2024 09:25

Lots of clothes especially made for sun protection now, I'd go with that and a good hat.

PamelaParis · 14/01/2024 09:26

I also like shade. That's why I wouldn't book tickets to an outdoor event in the middle of summer. What do you think the organisers are going to do?!

AyeRightYeAre · 14/01/2024 09:31

Hand held fans, lots of water, high factor sun screen may be the best you can do.

LlynTegid · 14/01/2024 09:43

@Housebuyer37 I think Olympics mens tennis is only three sets, but your points are valid, and Roland Garros is open air.

If OP you do decide to not go and sell your tickets, please do so via the official Olympics re-sale site, don't give money to touts or some of the rip-off resale sites.

KnickerlessParsons · 14/01/2024 10:35

Seating for outdoor sport is in direct sunlight - shock/horror!

Honestly OP, the same would apply for any sport - did you not think about it before buying tickets?😁

herewegoroundtheblueberrybush · 14/01/2024 15:56

Thank you to all the helpful replies and kindly naff off to all the snipers! My husband booked them without telling me/thinking about these things...
