To think it’s stupid to name a cat the same name as lifelong friend.

My best friend of 22 years - we are now in our 30’s has recently got a new female cat.

She has named her my exact name. I laughed it off thinking she was joking but it’s not a joke and it’s getting increasingly insulting.

AIBU to say she should change it as it just weirds me out hearing ‘X loves dreamies’ like
I am a cat who loves dreamies.

I'd be honoured if someone named their cat after me!

Chelsea is as much a cat's name as any other. Cats don't have to be called Fluffy or Mr Whiskers or any "not human" name. They are named for humans, gods, all sorts. After all Chelsea has been a part of London for a long time, it's not a human-only name. Granted some of your friend's comments do sound odd, but the naming itself, no, outside that context.

LauderSyme · 13/01/2024 02:02

It must be a joke, mustn't it?! Hopefully a fond one. Take it as an homage.

Fionaville · 13/01/2024 02:23

A kitten, I'd be honoured. An old rescue cat that she'd named Fiona, because it was fat and lazy and it reminded her of me, not so much.
I'm already dealing with a green ogre with the same name.

WetBandits · 13/01/2024 02:24

Chelsea the cat!! 😄

My cat and one of my best friends share a name, but I had the cat first 😂

Sizzless · 13/01/2024 01:16

My name is Chelsea so it’s not really a cat name. It’s just strange, even down to ‘oh I bet she’s going to live up to her name and be a dirty stopout’ I’m married with children!

Get the ugliest pet rat you can find and name it after her ‘because she looks like you’. Even better if it’s a boy.

Tilllly · 13/01/2024 02:58

It comes across as a very minor, silly thing
But I'd be pissed off

Bizarre thing to do

AuntieSoap · 13/01/2024 12:12

What is it that upsets you?

user1471434829 · 13/01/2024 12:22

A friend of a friend is called Dave Barker, someone in their friendship group got a dog and named it Dave Barker 🤣🤣 everyone thinks its funny and the original DB isn't offended.

HouseIsOnFire · 13/01/2024 12:22

I have it the other way and my step sister named her son the same as my cat (who is 2 years older than the kid)

What's worse is I get told off calling my cat Milo Snr or the kid Human Milo 🤣 (never to the step sister, but to my Mum)

*Milo is not the actual name but it's a similar very common name for a pet and a bit odder to use for a person

No such thing as an ‘ugly pet rat’, they are all beautiful 😌

Hissing cockroach, maybe…

I’m a vet and see at least one pet a week named Chelsea… I can totally understand it feels weird to you though

bananamangoes · 13/01/2024 17:37

Yanbu

This would really annoy me

You need to get a pet and name after her. An ugly shaggy mongrel?

Dave Barker's a perfect name for a dog! 😆

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 13/01/2024 22:04

I had pets that had the same names of two of my dc. (Before I had the dc.) I like the names what can I say!

FurballFrenzy · 13/01/2024 22:15

When I was about 4 or 5, my dads best mate and his wife named their dog the same as me.

It’s a proper name, but the shortened version. Like, if I was called Elizabeth but went by Lizzie, they called the dog Lizzie. He was the kind of person who would have found it hysterically funny. His wife just probably liked my name and thought it would be nice.

Weird, OP, but honestly after laughing it off I think my parents didn’t make a big deal of it and the jokes stopped once nobody rose to the bait. I’m still going but the dog has been gone decades.

Nowt as strange as folk, as they say 😁

toastandtwo · 13/01/2024 22:22

I’d be very, very honoured!

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 13/01/2024 22:28

Op you could get yourself a pet and name it after her.

haha! I’m a bit scared of rats so it was the first thing that came to mind, but anything she finds ugly will do 😂

I doubt much thought went into the cat name choice and it's certainly not insulting. It seems really pointless to get upset about it.

catin8oots · 14/01/2024 02:52

My dog and DS1 have the same name

Lavenderandbrown · 14/01/2024 04:09

It’s weird. A million other choices and she picks your name? Chelsea I would say to friend….its just very odd to me you selected my name for your cat may I ask why? Of course you can’t make her change the name but neither do you need to go along acting like it’s fine when to you (and me) it’s not. Voice your dismay.

Dave Barker's a perfect name for a dog! 😆

It really is! I only clocked the canine perfection of the surname following your comment! I LOVE that 😂

Spomsored · 14/01/2024 04:43

I have always tried to avoid giving my pets 'human' names, since I deeply regretted giving my favourite name to a cat when I didn't plan to have children. 8 years later I would have loved to use that name for my DD

homezookeeper · 14/01/2024 04:49

I'd see it as a compliment. Mine are named after rockstars who've meant something to me. We can't all choose "Kitty" or "Felix". It's probably a comfort thing, you're both close.
My first pet mouse as a child was named after my then teacher.
It's a pet that lives for a long time and she's chosen your name for it. It's not weird, it's her way of showing her affection for you.
If she'd had a baby and named it after you, that might be cause for concern.

And I wouldn't have clocked it if @user1471434829 hadn't mentioned it being the name of a friend's friend! 😄
