Yes , it’s a lovely song.
Interested to hear if there’s another way to take it!

I think maybe it’s because it starts with that he wrote the song two hours before they met and then towards the end there’s the line about would he be writing this to someone else instead.

Not to say that it’s not a love song, also, it’s a great song, but I suppose it’s almost like ‘I was going to fall in love with someone at some point, it just turned out to be you on that day.’

WinterExclusive · 12/01/2024 21:12

FEELING CALLED LOVE my favourite from this album...

But that's kind of the point about love and meeting people isn't it? So much of it is just down to luck, and paths crossing at the right time.

Inspired by this thread, I am listening to the album and have been transported back to my A-levels which was a fantastic period for me so THANK YOU!!

ExtraOnions · 12/01/2024 21:19

There’s not a bad song on the album.

Pencil Skirt is one of my favourites:

When you raise your pencil skirt
Like a veil before my eyes
Like the look upon his face
As he's zipping up his flies

Oh, well, I know that you're engaged to him
Oh, but I know you want something to play with, baby

Zitouna · 12/01/2024 21:24

Another one who had it as their first dance! Of course it’s a love song 😊

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 12/01/2024 21:24

Yes it is, I love that song.
The whole album is brilliant.

Alsowondering · 12/01/2024 21:26

Another vote for love song - we also had it on our wedding playlist. I need to listen to the whole album now.

bellinisurge · 12/01/2024 21:27

First Dance tune for some good friends of mine

CharlotteStreetW1 · 12/01/2024 21:28

That whole album is perfection.

Yes, could be read either way. I guess that’s the thing about great songs, they mean different things to different people.

momonpurpose · 12/01/2024 21:33

Love that song and actually all of Pulp's music! YANBU!

FoxBaseBeta · 12/01/2024 21:34

Jarvis dedicated it to Steve Mackey at the 2023 reunion shows 😢

I always regret that we didn't use it in our wedding...

I’m with you. It’s a great song, but I always took the sentiment to be a bit tongue in cheek - a nonchalant, sort of ‘you’ll do’ vibe rather than a ‘goodness thank heavens the stars aligned’…

Yes, and a lot of his / their songs have that vibe in general so it makes sense!

Zooeyzo · 12/01/2024 21:49

Yes a great love song. So well written. Loved that whole album.

RobertaFirmino · 12/01/2024 21:50

It's really not my thing. Jarvis Cocker is a fantastic lyricist though.

SellFridges · 12/01/2024 21:53

YANBU

In year 7, DD had to bring examples of ballads in popular culture to her English class. We had a wonderful time listening to music and identifying true ballads. This was on our list.

SwordToFlamethrower · 12/01/2024 21:53

Beautiful love song!

coldcallerbaiter · 12/01/2024 21:55

It is the meeting by chance part….
They could have changed their plans for that evening instead

A vibe that reminds me of Tim Minchin’s “If I didn’t have you.”

A realist, not a romantic!

Absolutely a love song, had it as first dance at our wedding. Reminds me so much of meeting and almost not meeting DH.

Same, that's mine and DH's "song"!

Pure Pulp and that's why it's the best love song ever 😏

"Now you can tell some lies about the good times that you've had.
But I've kissed your mother twice and now I'm working on your dad"

👏

There's no better album before or since in my opinion.

I love that song, in fact the whole album! Especially I Spy, it's so Machiavellian 😈must dig it out again and take myself back to 1997...

Omg! My favourite song since my dad bought me the album when I was 11 (probably inappropriate, who cares) what an excellent song and album!

I've never found people who were as passionate!

VerbenaGirl · 12/01/2024 22:24

Yep - first dance at my first wedding!
