How often do you talk to your boss?

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 12/01/2024 13:20

Just curious how often people speak to their boss either in person or mobile/teams etc.

Not talking about emails, texts etc.

Is this driven by them or you?

Would you prefer more or less communication?

Once a month for a catch up usually, unless a project comes up where more discussion is needed. I'm happy with the level of comms. My role is mainly self-driven.

SallyWD · 12/01/2024 13:23

I work 3 days a week. We work in the same office two days a week so chat all day then (about work and non-work stuff). One day a week we work remotely but usually have a video chat two or three times on that day.
I'm happy with this level of contact. We get on well and both like to touch base.

ComtesseDeSpair · 12/01/2024 13:23

Scheduled meetings once a week. We’ll usually sit down ad hoc to discuss a project two or three times a week as well as that, and have brief catch ups in passing when we coincide in the office.

We’re Legal, and everyone in the team works on different branches, so pretty much everything we do is joint enterprise and needs regular feedback and updating. If I wasn’t being involved by my manager I’d be worried!

Hillrunning · 12/01/2024 13:24

Mine hasn't contacted me in any form since December 21st. No so much as a wave. She is a useless coward. I am OK with this as interaction with her is no fun.

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 12/01/2024 13:26

He calls me most days ( we are perm working from home)

we are in many of the same meetings and chat on teams throughout the day.

NotFastButFurious · 12/01/2024 13:26

I hardly hear from my line manager. He works remotely and we maybe message on Teams once a week and occasionally he rings (often on a Monday, i think in prep for a resourcing call they have later). I saw him in person in Dec when he wafted through the office after a Client meeting declaring he was going for an earlier train! We've known each other through work for about 20 years and we're both at a level where we don't need micromanaging.

Mangolover123 · 12/01/2024 13:27

Tentatively once per week but more like once every 2 weeks.
I like the check in, if only for 20 mins.
My boss schedules (and changes the meeting.

For my team, weekly or every 2 weeks at most.
I let the team book their 1:1's

I try really hard not to reschedule the 1:1 meetings as it annoys me if my boss does.

Puppalicious · 12/01/2024 13:33

Fortnightly 1:1s. I do the same for my reports too. Then ad hoc calls on a particular matter maybe once a fortnight or so. We would be in the same meetings probably every other day, and if we’re in the office on the same day as the meetings (happens maybe twice a fortnight on average), there would be some chat before or after.

Superscientist · 12/01/2024 13:35

At least twice a week, I work 4 days a week.
In my role we have weekly meetings with other people in my team and bigger meetings every 4 weeks in additional to this. We have projects with people across different teams and these meet fortnightly. My boss chairs these meetings
Me and my boss are both in the office on the same day and we catch up properly in arranged meetings or informally over coffee in the lunch room.
If I need to talk to him around this I can be arranged with an hour or so notice which I did just before Christmas.

Traumdeuter · 12/01/2024 13:38

Work in engineering. We have a scheduled half hour once a week to check in, and a minimum of one larger meeting each week that we both attend and provide updates to. We don’t usually speak formally outside of those chats as I manage my own workload and have a lot of autonomy.

ComtesseDeSpair · 12/01/2024 13:39

I suppose the difference between feeling you are managed well and feeling you are being micromanaged is the nature of the interaction. Even in weeks where I meet with my manager daily, it’s because we are updating each other on the progress of a fast-moving piece of work, establishing which steps have been completed, and advising each other of any hitches experienced or potential issues which may be in the horizon for which we should think ahead and be prepared to act on. He isn’t checking my work or monitoring that I’m doing stuff - we are collegiately ensuring that we both have the same view of how things are progressing and whether we need to involve anyone else.

lljkk · 12/01/2024 13:52

I don't actually know who my boss is. Seriously, how hilarious is that?
I have 2 senior colleagues who manage the budgets & I try to keep happy, do what they ask.

I can go weeks with no comms from them. I contact them when I need them to do something, especially making decisions. I suppose the average is 2 email exchanges/week with each of them. I see either in person about once every 3 weeks on average.

I worked for a while in NHS, it was a shock to have frequent 'catch ups'

BitchyHen · 12/01/2024 13:55

She came in to my office this morning to show me her outfit, but we are a really tight knit team.
Officially we have a weekly team meeting and fortnightly 1 to 1s.

All2Well · 12/01/2024 13:56

About once a month...more if something is going on. They are nice but my colleagues and I dread having to meet them. They always want something and we all worry it will be something we can't keep on top of. There's a lot of trendy corporate speak.

I never met my previous LM...it was impossible to professionally develop as a result.

I guess the current approach is better and I feel more supported but I wouldn't want more regular contact!

AyeRightYeAre · 12/01/2024 13:57

My boss and I meet on teams/zoom about once a month. In person - maybe once or twice a year. I can call/whatsapp her more regularly if needed and she is very responsive.

My line reports - I have an online 121 with each once per month. We have an online team meeting weekly and in-person team meeting every second month. In addition to that we will have ad hoc calls or online meetings.

I am very happy with the level of communication I have up and down. I ask each of my line reports regularly if they are happy and they tell me they are.

LadyDanburysHat · 12/01/2024 13:57

WFH and have fortnightly 121s. Outside of that a very occasional call if she wants something.

Floopani · 12/01/2024 14:00

As little as I can manage as they are pretty useless and I can get more done by not involving them.

They like a monthly catch up in the diary, but usually they cancel it last minute, which works for me.

almondflake · 12/01/2024 14:02

Every day all day , I sit next to him in the office. We get on really well and have known each other through the business for nearly 20 years .

ManateeFair · 12/01/2024 14:06

I see her either in person or via Teams calls a minimum of twice a week, as we have a team meeting once a week and we also have a one-to-one at some point every week.

Often there might an ad-hoc Teams call or we'll be in the same meeting or we'll happen to be in the office on the same day (we have a hybrid working pattern) so I'll see her more often, but it's twice at a minimum.

We do message and email as well.

I get on well with my boss, and I'm in a fairly tight-knit, friendly team so in general we're pretty communicative across the whole team. I don't feel like I need to speak to my boss any more than I currently do and I wouldn't mind if it was less. But I know some people want to check in with their manager daily.

RosyDawn · 12/01/2024 14:08

I have a 121 with them fortnightly (she’d be happy with monthly but I asked for more frequent as I’m a bit isolated in my role and need someone who isn’t one of my direct reports to brainstorm/vent with.) And then see her weekly in a team meeting.

GreigeO · 12/01/2024 14:09

Why? Are you doing some research?

ManchesterLu · 12/01/2024 14:09

I pretty much never talk to mine. We have an online system with a list of tasks and who's assigned to them. I do mine when they come up and submit the file through the system for the next person. There's never any issues with my work. I'm more than happy with that.

PiggieWig · 12/01/2024 14:16

Most days. Our work is quick turnaround rolling stuff so we need to keep each other in the loop.
Team meeting in the morning then a phone call or video if something crops up.

JayoftheRed · 12/01/2024 14:18

Every single day, she's my best friend! We work in the same office, and often meet up at weekends etc. She was my friend before I started working there though.

NewName24 · 12/01/2024 14:20

Maybe 2 out of 3 days.

But this must depend both on the size of your team and also the work you do.
