To think Vinted were wrong to side with the seller

I bought a pair of trousers on Vinted. Described simply as size 12, very good condition. Photos included a pic of the label showing the size '12R' (R=regular) but no measurements. They're quite a popular brand so if you know these, you know which size / product number to buy - both of which are shown on the label.

When they arrived they'd likely been altered to be exceptionally short (so short that they were actually capri style on my standard height 5'5" self). To the best of my knowledge, this particular trouser isn't available in a cropped length (and the product number on the label corresponds with the standard length I'd expected as I already own several pairs of these) but I messaged the seller to ask if they were cropped or altered as there was nothing mentioned in the listing to say they weren't a standard length. Seller replied 'no - these are normal length, 29 inches inside leg'.
I whipped out my tape measure and measured them - 24 inches. I sent this photo to the seller to show that the trousers is received were most definitely not 29 inches and could I please return for refund because they are far too short. She said no.
I put in a claim with Vinted (item significantly not as described) and sent photos showing the 'regular label' as well as the seller's message about them being standard length.
Vinted replied to say sorry, there was no fault from the seller and that I should have asked more questions before buying to make sure that they were suitable and to check that hadn't been altered.
AIBU to think that if you are selling trousers that you've altered or are not full length, you mention this when selling them?
They weren't cheap either (£50) so I'm quite out of pocket as the chance of selling them on in such an odd length is almost impossible.

I found this is the case with things on Vinted, eBay and charity shops's They're often just a bit weird or odd, like they don’t fit properly or tight on the neck or just not what you’d expect. I guess people get rid of items like this because of those reasons and end up palming it off to charity or flogging it online 🤷‍♀️

greengreengrass25 · 12/01/2024 19:43

Sometimes the sizing is off. Are they samples, perhaps

I bought brand new trousers but they were way too small even though I had the same style from the manufacturer in that size

matleavelove · 12/01/2024 20:00

I've had a few issues with Vinted where I've raised an issue and they quite clearly haven't read my message/complaint properly a few times now. Each time I've persisted and replied to their response, pointing out they've not read my message properly and they have misunderstood. Perhaps try persist with them!

Clothing will often mould itself somewhat to the shape of the person who most wears it (think of breaking in jeans or shoes). When someone else wears it, it seems off.

We've just had a nightmare with vinted. Bought an expensive item along with insurance to cover it being genuine.

Immediately checked it out, took 3 days to hear back from the brand. It was fake so tried to claim. Declined as the claim was outside 48 hours.

No recourse with seller, who blocked us. Vinted didn't want to know. Absolutely appalling and the bank are now refunding

I bought a toy on Vinted before Christmas for my grandchild. It was £50 odd quid. I bid and paid for the item. A few days later the seller was complaining that she didn't have time to post the article. I explained I wanted it for Christmas. A few days later she decided not to send the item at all because she had a one year old and she was too busy to organise posting it. It took nearly two weeks to get the money refunded. In the meantime I had to track down and pay for another one. Vinted said, even though I had paid and she had received the money, the seller had the right to change her mind. In fact, the call assistant I was texting for help was sympathetic but told me that Vinted sides with the seller. I think the sub text is don't spend more than a few quid because it is hard to get a refund if the seller is difficult.
You cannot leave poor feedback if you haven't received the article even though they have accepted and taken your money. I don't think Vinted has much in the way of professional standards compared to EBAY

The seller doesn’t receive any money until the item is posted, received, and the buyer has marked it as “everything is ok. The money stays with Vinted until then

surreygirl1987 · 12/01/2024 20:35

Vinted has alway sided with the seller. I hate the fact that their policy states that the buyer has to pay postage when returning an item, EVEN WHEN it's the seller's error! Ebay is better for buyers, Vinted is better for sellers.

WhatanEmbarrasment · 12/01/2024 20:50

vinted is brilliant I got a brand new coat with tags cost £90 new got it for £8. But then I would never pay anything more than about £10. No chance would I spend £50 on vinted

Unfortunately they closed the case pretty quickly and sent the money to the seller. As in I complained (sending photos to support my claim that the trousers were shorter than they should be) and they replied to say sorry but I should have asked the seller for measurements / asked if they'd been altered before buying and immediately completed the order so the seller got paid.

Possibly but 24" inside leg is incredibly short for something labelled 'regular' (even petite sizes are normally 27-28").
The only explanation if they haven't been altered is that they are cropped / capri trousers but again, this wasn't mentioned in the listing and as far as I know this trouser only comes as full length (but are available in short / regular / long variations).

This was my own purchase on EBay so a different scenario

I think your seller had shortened the trousers and I can see why you are annoyed

Froze35 · 12/01/2024 22:28

I ordered some women’s Nike cycling shorts from vinted, what actually turned up were capri length leggings and I think they were men’s!! The seller said she was tall so they fit her as cycling shorts. She would have to be 12ft for them to fit as cycling shorts!! Luckily the buyer accepted they were not as described and refunded me.

Northernladdette · 14/01/2024 22:20

Appeal Vinted’s decision

[email protected]

if you have no joy, I’d leave a negative review and sell on with a more accurate description 🙂

ThatWardrobe · 14/01/2024 22:30

I bought some Clarks patent nude shoes on Vinted a while ago. They were cleverly photographed to hide the scuff marks which were evident as soon as they arrived. I photographed and complained as soon as I'd opened them. Couldn't believe it when Vinted sided with the seller.

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 14/01/2024 22:31

I like vinted but I don’t pay more than £10 for stuff. It’s like gambling, generally get good stuff so it balances out the odd duff item. I am surprised at expensive items on there and wondering who buys them.

PIB20 · 14/01/2024 22:37

Honestly vinted is a nightmare for both buyers and sellers. A few months ago i sold a football shirt on vinted, it was official, purchased from a well known store that only stock official merchandise a few years ago. They person buying raised a case against me on vinted stating it was fake and not a real shirt. Vinted asked me to supply to receipt or extra photos, which i did not have the receipt for and couldnt take more photos because the person who brought it had it. Vinted sided with them, refunded them and they got to keep the shirt because they dont have to return 'counterfeit' items, even though it wasnt. Then said i could be banned if i sell counterfit goods again. A few weeks later the person who brought it listed it on their own vinted store for double what they brought it for!

Sorry you got stung this time. Vinted customer service leaves much to be desired

Did you get a friend to buy them and then claim they were fake so that the seller got stung and you got the shirt back?

Ifeellikeateenageragain · 14/01/2024 22:45

Doesn't Vinted have an option when you receive he package to sya if there's a problem with it? And presumably don't release the funds to the seller if this hasn't been clicked (although there's a time limit to it)? I haven't had to use it yet so don't know what happens when you click "there is a problem"?

You click "there's a problem", type what the problem is and that message gets sent to the seller. Who basically denies everything you say as a buyer so you have the option of returning the item at your expense to get a refund (if the seller agrees) or accepting you've wasted your money.

If the item was £10, you've paid £1 Vinted fee, £4 postage and it'll cost you £4 to post back, you have to weigh up whether it's better to walk away having lost £15, or go to the hassle of a return for a loss of £9.

The "buyer protection fee" is meaningless and really just needs to be renamed "admin fee".

I like selling on Vinted but buying is about 50% successful. I've learnt now to ask so many questions, all the measurements, whether the item has been washed, will it be sent in proper packaging not black bin bags (because those leave an awful smokey smell), has it been tumble dried, pics of the washing instructions ... basically everything I do right and assumed (wrongly) others would do too.

Mummytotheboy · 14/01/2024 23:12

Vinted have made the wrong decision. They are significantly not as described. You shouldnt need to ask as she was selling them as a 29inch leg trouser. She should of disclosed this information as its highly relevant. She cant even play dumb that she didnt realise as she said to you straight away they are 29inches. Take screen shots and Email [email protected] you get to speak to an actual human not a chat bot. If you do a charge back you will have your account blocked.
Cooling off periods and consumer rights that people keep mentioning do not apply to private p2p sales.

bombardelli · 14/01/2024 23:29

YANBU. Can you at least leave her a really bad review?

Forgetyou · 14/01/2024 23:42

Just read the terms and conditions and seems you have to pay for Buyer Protection. Absolute rip
off!

Bookworm39 · 15/01/2024 01:22

I sell on ebay even though they take fees. And usually side with the buyer in any dispute. So I have to be careful with my listings and make sure they are as accurate as possible. Still a lot of stupid buyers don't read the listing though (not aimed at OP here as the listing was obviously incorrect ) and I have to contact Ebay customer service who have always been good and either told me how to proceed or they sort it.

I looked into Vinted and it seemed well dodgy to sell on. Unless you are a dodgy seller in which case it's probably OK.

KindleGirlie · 15/01/2024 03:28

Wtf is the buyer protection fee for then? At least on eBay they often refund the buyer and seller at the same time.

DottyLottieLou · 15/01/2024 04:32

Buyers protection only covers you both if the parcel is lost in transit.
