Bo smell in kids

My dd 8 has a bo smell if she doesn't shower everyday. Is this too early? I could sometimes smell it on her at 7 as well. I'm a but worried that she should see a doctor.

I sometimes smell it on my 7 year old

Pripsen · 11/01/2024 08:33

Same when mine was 7. Totally normal according to the usual consensus on here

Didimum · 11/01/2024 08:34

I think at 8, this would be viewed as normal. Precocious puberty is when signs of puberty occur before 7/8 in girls and 9 in boys. She’s most likely just on the earlier side of starting puberty.

FusionChefGeoff · 11/01/2024 08:34

I've also found it's their clothes more than them - mine are buggers for shoving stuff back on hooks / cupboards when it could do with a wash

BashfulClam · 11/01/2024 08:34

Some girls start their periods at 8 (way too young though as they shouldn’t be dealing with that). So puberty could be on its way.

Zooeyzo · 11/01/2024 08:34

OK that's putting my mind at ease. I don't remember having that smell until a few years later. I've been really worried about it.

Just sensitively get her a nice deodorant if you're worried about it, seems perfectly normal age range to start happening.

Zooeyzo · 11/01/2024 08:36

@JustJoinedRightNow I've told her she's getting a grown up smell and she gets upset but then I also say its better we know and do something to help.

@BashfulClam I really hope this isn't the case

My 8 year old started to get BO smell at 7.5 on hot days. At 8.5 she and several friends of her friends wear deodorant. I can definitely smell if she's forgotten to put in on on a hot day!

Cece92 · 11/01/2024 08:40

My daughter was the same she's 10 now, showers every day and puts deodorant on every morning and night. I don't remember ever having BO at that age. Not something I suffer from. X

Me too. 8 is too young to be dealing with that crap, at least let girls get up secondary school. Although I hit puberty at 10 but my periods didn’t appear until 13. Bar soap and deodorant.

Sparrow7 · 11/01/2024 08:41

My daughter has been wearing deodorant since that age, I wouldn't worry.

Sparrow7 · 11/01/2024 08:43

DD needed deodorant from 7 years old. She didn't start her periods until 11 and a half.

Marblessolveeverything · 11/01/2024 08:43

There are lots of natural products, my ten year old lad who can run sweaty keeps fresh with shower every morning and a roll on from Holland and B.

I was a concerned about using the more harsh products on young skin.

Zooeyzo · 11/01/2024 08:47

@Cece92 same. I was the last of my friends to get periods too

Take her out when you next go to Superdrug or Boots and let her smell them all and pick one. Make it the beginning of her future beauty regime.

Read up on them and see which ones have less allergens so it is kinder.

equinoxprocess · 11/01/2024 08:56

Is she actually washing herself on the days she doesn't shower?

And wearing clean clothes?

There's no point putting perfumed products on top if she's not clean in the first place. That's not a solution.

OwlWeiwei · 11/01/2024 09:01

There's definitely a hormonal surge around age 8 that makes their sweat a bit honky.

Zooeyzo · 11/01/2024 09:01

@equinoxprocess she has very dry sensitive skin so limit showers. But yes we do a smell check and then a wipe with some water and tea tree oil. Clothes are clean and mainly cotton although I've noticed it's worse after she has to wear a polyester top as part of her uniform so have said to wear a cotton top underneath.
I'm reluctant for deodorant at this age.

She needs to shower daily if she's starting to smell. And to wash with soap/shower gel, not tea tree oil. I'm sure you can get dry skin friendly oils/lotions to use.

wineandmaltesershappyme · 11/01/2024 09:04

I use antibacterial soap on my 7yr olds underarms which is a big help.
If anyone can recommend a deo though for summer?

Stressfordays · 11/01/2024 09:05

I started my periods at 10 so to me getting BO at 8 seems reasonable. Ensure she has daily showers (was in zerobase if she has dry sensitive skin) and get her some sensitive skin deodorant. My eldest boy started to smell at 10 and puberty is well underway now at 11. It's getting earlier in children now.

OneStepOn · 11/01/2024 09:06

Mitchum stick deodorant

I appreciate it feels like she is too young but being smelly at school is no fun at all.

Bar soap, hot water, washing the area twice a day, then a swipe of stick deodorant.

BurbageBrook · 11/01/2024 09:06

She can shower daily with a gentle moisturising gel like Aveeno or similar but make sure she soaps well using real soap (like a bar of soap) under the arms. I have dry sensitive skin and this is what I do.
