My dd 8 has a bo smell if she doesn't shower everyday. Is this too early? I could sometimes smell it on her at 7 as well. I'm a but worried that she should see a doctor.

I've also found it's their clothes more than them - mine are buggers for shoving stuff back on hooks / cupboards when it could do with a wash

@FusionChefGeoff shoving things back on hooks!! ye gods I am fighting a losing battle to get the grandkids to pick their clothes off that huge ledge where the bed sits!! (usually called the floor!) they are 15 and 13! they live with us.

Children's sweat STINKS at the very start of puberty, it does settle down though. Scrubbingtons do a skin friendly "Pit Stop" deodorant for this very reason.

Make sure you are using something like Dettol antibac laundry stuff in the wash too.

Partyatno10 · 11/01/2024 09:11

Kindly, it's better to get her a deodorant to use than be the smelly kid at school op

@equinoxprocess she has very dry sensitive skin so limit showers. But yes we do a smell check and then a wipe with some water and tea tree oil. Clothes are clean and mainly cotton although I've noticed it's worse after she has to wear a polyester top as part of her uniform so have said to wear a cotton top underneath.
I'm reluctant for deodorant at this age.

have you tried shower oil, scent-free moisturiser etc?

Showering every day does sound like something she may need (and will most likely have to do when she´s older)...

Zooeyzo · 11/01/2024 09:12

@Partyatno10 I agree. I definitely don't want that.

I think I will try a quick 2 minute shower and then lots of moisturiser. See how her skin does.

Bar soap and a flannel for an armpit wash daily before school. Bar soap not shower gel, also Dettol laundry detergent can be added to the usual washing powder/liquid, it goes in the fabric softener drawer bit.

I have sons and year 4 they started to smell. In school year 5 they show them a video for sex education purposes but most of it is dealing with hygiene.

@2jacqi re the children's clothing on the floor tell them from this day on that the floor will be clean. You will be back to check in 10 minutes. You have to follow through. They will need a place for slightly worn clothes that they can wear again. Mine have a drawer, I empty that every half term and wash anything in it. Yes I have sons, yes their floors are clear because I did the above from a young age with them. My youngest is almost 18.

My daughter had this at this age too and she also started early puberty periods at 8. The doctors did stop this though by treating her.

I like you was a late developer so I was a bit shocked.
Has she got any other symptoms of puberty ? Breast buds, vaginal discharge , very emotional ? If so take her to GP.

I would really recommend a natural deodorant e.g faith in nature or pitrok. You can get them on Amazon or any health food food like Holland and Barrett

MenopauseSucks · 11/01/2024 09:39

If possible she should be cleaning her armpits with a bar of soap & a flannel - gets rid of underarm odours far better than shower gel, shower puff, etc.
With a sensitive soap, it should do her for the days when she doesn't shower,

Zooeyzo · 11/01/2024 10:22

@noclouds no other signs. I'm keeping an eye on it. She's always been very emotional so no change and certainly not worse!

PitRock is a crystal natural stick.

Weirdly overnight I became allergic to all deodorant - even ones with no perfumes and anti allergens from H&B.

Works a treat and no more blisters or soreness. Just put on damp armpits but don't wet the stick under a tap.

Changed things for me as I would stink without it.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 12/01/2024 21:07

Bought my PitRock in Boots.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 12/01/2024 21:53

My 9 year old dd also has started needing to use a deodorant - we use salt of the earth roll on.

She also needs to wash her hair more frequently, and use a cleanser on her face.

I feel like I'm treading a fine line between expressing how important personal hygiene is, and making sure she doesn't feel ashamed of these changes

SallyWD · 12/01/2024 21:58

My DD started smelling of BO at 7. She didn't start her periods until 13 nor did she develop in others ways too early. I think BO can be the first sign of puberty and can often come years before other changes.

theduchessofspork · 12/01/2024 22:06

She doesn’t need to wash her whole body in the shower daily, but she does need to go in quickly everyday to wash bits and pits, else you are fighting a loosing battle.

Try a natural deodorant like Wild - they are much better than they used to be. You don’t want her to be the smelly kid in school.

Bananalotionitis · 12/01/2024 22:28

Glad I found this! I noticed a whiff of BO from my 7yr old this evening too and panicked.
