To hate next doors cat with an absolute passion

PostWar9 · 10/01/2024 15:23

Next door have this nightmare cat which I think is a nasty little creature. Constantly destroying my garden, going to toilet in it, hissing at us. It’s got to the point now where whenever it comes into the garden I specifically let the dog out to chase it to get it out and I’d never normally do that. Dog stays inside most of the year. A lot of cats are filled with love and you can see as friends or companions but this one is just not nice at all. AIBU to hate this cat?

What do you mean by 'destroying' the garden? If it's causing damage then might be worth a chat with the owner?

On the subject of wildlife... of course I understand that we don't want rats, etc and potentially harmful creatures right on top of us, but it does bug me when people are surprised to see foxes, rodents and the like in their garden. We're constantly eroding their habitat, where do we expect them to go? Animals don't understand the concept of our human boundaries, and why should they? The world isn't just for us.

OldTinHat · 10/01/2024 18:08

I also hate my neighbour's cat with a passion. It shits on the flat roof under a bedroom window and if I open the windows the whole house stinks. My flat roof is literally a litter tray.

I've sat in the window armed with water pistols, shouted, put anti cat pellets all over but no, the bastardy cat still shits in one half under the window and sun bathes at the other end.

KeeeeeepDancing · 10/01/2024 18:13

I think the root of the conflict seems to be that you think your garden is yours. And the cat thinks your garden is its garden.
Hence it is defending its territory. You have to show it who is boss. By shooing it out of the garden yourself. Yes to a supersoaker, ready filled with water. Won't hurt the cat but it will get the message.

Please don’t send your dog out to attack the cat.

I once overhead a neighbour joking about allowing his dog to kill my cat. I hate than man with a passion - and got my revenge when he need access via my garden. I said no and explained I couldnt risk removing the fence even temporarily when he had a dangerous dog! Then further explained when he looked confused. He back pedalled furiously - but I wouldn’t change my position!

Falkenburg · 10/01/2024 18:26

If your dog is very old, when it passes you could get a rescue cat and it might be territorial and keep the cat out of your garden and being a cat it won't shit in its own garden.

@BassoContinuo

You can avoid animal cruelty though, she's purposely encouraging it. I'm not saying it shouldn't be in it's garden, she says it rarely goes out there she's only putting it out to chase the cat.

An example why encouraging small prey is incredibly dangerous/cruel. A dog which had been encouraged to go after small prey in my area went into my neighbours garden and mauled their 18 year old cat in front of them. Dog has since bit multiple other dogs and is matter of time before it bites a child.

Some dogs don't need encouragement. I had 2 lakeland terriers and one of them had a fierce prey drive. She was a brilliant ratter, caught a fair few rabbits and (much to my disgust) killed a hedgehog and left it on the lawn. (The other one was only really interested in chasing balls.)

Next door's cats didn't come into my garden the whole time I had the dogs.
Within a week of losing my last dog, they were back in my garden as though the dogs had never existed, killing birds and shitting everywhere.

Mynewnameis · 10/01/2024 18:34

Got I hate some pet owners entitlement.
op. Let your dog out, the cat will learn to avoid.
I dont have a dog and me chasing them is much less effective. And no, I am not going to stop them using my garden as their litter tray.

HelpMeGetThrough · 10/01/2024 18:35

It's a cat. They're not malicious, nor is it deliberately targeting your garden,

Yes they are and yes it is. It's a cat, they're little fuckers.

I do like a cat.

Mynaddmawr · 10/01/2024 18:41

Have you tried mentioning the cat shit to your neighbour? I'm a crazy cat lady and if one of my neighbours mentioned this problem I would have no issues going and picking up the poo out of their gardens. Appreciate that bit is annoying but no need to hold a vendetta against an animal for being an animal, life is a bit too short

KarenNotAKaren · 10/01/2024 18:45

Gosh how annoying! I’d keep on letting the dog out and hopefully it will stop visiting you.

I once lived next door to a bastard of a cat who would lie on our driveway and refuse to move when when we pulled up in the car I never could quite bring myself to go close to it in the car so would just park on the street It would also sleep on our bonnet and scratch the paintwork. Neighbours just sort of went “oh dear” 🙄 referred to it as “Horrible ginger bastard”. The good news is: the cat will croak at some point 🙊

Bex5490 · 10/01/2024 18:45

Try playing the cat at its own game.

Hiss back, destroy flowers and routinely shit on the next door lawn…🤷🏽‍♀️

KarenNotAKaren · 10/01/2024 18:46

They fucking are! I actually love cats (except the aforementioned Horrible Ginger Bastard) I love how aloof and dickish they are 😂

Liquorish · 10/01/2024 18:49

My dogs will happily sit in their own garden with the birds, hedgehogs etc and let them all do their own thing. Leaving the pigeons alone to sunbathe in their bath. But they know if someone’s pet cat comes in to needlessly destroy the lovely balance of wildlife, that they are to see it out as fast as they can.

Ivyiris · 10/01/2024 16:17

I agree with pp get water on it to deter, it's not going to hurt it. Dog could and if it did your allowing animal cruelty. Also if my cat got hurt by you setting your dog on it best believe your life would be a misery living next to me.

Have a day off, FFS. OP is perfectly entitled to let her own dog out into her own garden.

The cat can look after itself!

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 10/01/2024 19:00

I put YANBU as it probably senses you don't like it. People need to get over cat dirt in their garden, it's no different than birds shitting on your car/fox dirt. What's the difference?

caringcarer · 10/01/2024 19:01

KnittedCardi · 10/01/2024 16:21

You could try making friends instead....give it love and attention, and it will reward you by shitting elsewhere.

This. If this cat thinks your garden is part of its empire it will shit elsewhere.

People have small children who go out and play and if you miss cat poo (which can be very toxic to certain people) and someone puts their hand or foot on it then it’s really not the same as bird poo on your car.

The owners of aforementioned Horrible Ginger Bastard told us to lob any poo over into their garden! But I couldn’t bring myself to do it as knowing my luck I’d hit one of them squate in the face. Had to do poo-sweeps before anyone could use the garden and I’d just bag and bin it

I love that. “Love me and I will take my defecation elsewhere”. It’s so Cat 😂cats would run the world given half the chance 🤣

Yeahhh birds can still poo in your garden too.. for you to put your hand or foot in. I was just using the car as an example as we notice it more.

MeMyBooksAndMyCats · 10/01/2024 19:26

YABU for setting your dog on a cat.

Also, take your dog for a walk that's cruel.

Lifeinlists · 10/01/2024 19:28

YANBU but cat owners project all sorts of personas on to what is effectively a semi wild animal.

It was a great day when my next door neighbours moved and took their 3 cats with them. The cats hated each other so, when they weren't killing birds and crapping everywhere but their own place, they were threatening or fighting each other.
The previous neighbours had got divorced and I took their elderly cat in where she led a life of luxury until age 23 so I'm not totally heartless.

Google 'cat repellent mat'. Cheap as chips. Cover the flat roof, problem gone.

itsmyp4rty · 10/01/2024 19:42

Yeah I have no problem letting my dogs out to get rid of the cats. I don't care if they're nice or not, they still shit everywhere.

SnowBotherer · 10/01/2024 19:48

ManateeFair · 10/01/2024 16:36

A mesh system over your fences would easily stop it coming in

Send the bill to your neighbour if you do this, OP.

@ManateeFair

im not sure if you're joking or what, but if you're serious - don't be daft, you can't go spending other people's money for them. I'd tell you to shove it. But had you come & discussed it, I might well contribute if I think it's the best way to keep my cst out if your garden.

simplest thing is to make friends with it, but you don't want to do that.🤷🏻‍♀️
