Something in the loft!

Somethingintheloft · 09/01/2024 23:22

Right, here me out! I'm not crazy. For the last 2.5 years since moving to this house. There is something in my loft. Every night it fumbles about. Taps like aa nut or something above my head . I can here rustling of whatever its going through!

We have been to investigate many many many times!! No droppings! We have put down all manner of traps and things to tempt whatever it is. Nothing!!

I know the previous tenants and they said its been doing it for a few years too. There are no holes we can locate for it to get in and out. Previous tenants have said the same!

What could it be!? And to survive at least 5 years!!!!

It freaks me out ever night!

Not really an AIBU. But is it time to move!!?? 🤣

@kitchensupps I would have to charge it rent to pay for the camera

Do you know anyone with a baby monitor you could borrow for a few hours one evening? Most of them have good night vision

Somethingintheloft · 09/01/2024 23:51

@Mynaddmawr good idea!

It’s going to be birds, squirrels, bats or rats.

Install a night vision camera

This.

possibly a pine Martin?

TeaGinandFags · 10/01/2024 00:17

Get a cat and stick him up there. Failing that, leave some used kitty litter (in a tray) to discourage whatever it is from returning.

Have you spoken to your landlord who may not only have a night vision camera but may not enjoy constantly looking for tenants?

Keep us posted.

I get a lot of birds under the eaves of my roof, sounds like they're in the loft but they're not.

Also another vote for birds.
There may be a nest under the sofits or something......

FloofCloud · 10/01/2024 00:22

Right ... any animal would produce faeces ... I'm going with .... ffs lock the hatch it'll be a person!!! ... or wind ... or heat/cold exchange ... sorry love horror so going with number 1 🤣

Topseyt123 · 10/01/2024 00:30

It could possibly be a squirrel. My eldest DD (28) had one in her loft and had to get a pest controller out to deal with it. They did, and also patched up any areas they could find where it could have got in.

There have been no repeat squirrel visits, though a few months later she did have to have pest control back again to deal with some mice.

We once had birds get inside one of the soil stacks of our house and needed to get a pest controller in to get them out. They had fallen down from an area on the roof and were trapped. Noisy buggers they were too, especially as they were distressed. It was a relief when they were gone, and we had all of the animal proofing around our roof renewed and repaired.

Call a good pest controller to come in and take a look just to be sure it isn't anything like that.

Sasquatch

Trenda · 10/01/2024 00:32

Magpies on my roof sounds as if they are in the loft . I only realise after having a quick panic but then see them pottering about along the guttering
We have had squirrels a couple of years ago and there is no doubt that they were living the high life up there. We had to get motion-activated camera which was surprisingly excellent and cheap from Amazon. Its still going strong as a puppy cam ! Thee camera showed not only the squirrels but also a few mice so was sensitive enough for all sizes. It had a night view and microphone all for about £25 .

TS13 · 10/01/2024 00:55

We have magpies too and they run around at night making a racket! They managed to lever off some of the soffit boards and bring up a family last summer, there were fledgling magpies everywhere. We got a builder in after the breeding season had finished to make it secure for the winter and he found used nests. And now … they’re back and running around again. I’m a bird lover so I don’t mind too much. At least they don’t chew through the electrics.

Sounds like squirrels. If you want to get rid of them, put a bright light on in the loft, such as a lamp with the brightest bulb possible, and keep it on for a couple of nights. They hate the light so will leave and won't come back in a hurry.

I have an owl, lands on my roof and makes a lot of noise, it took me ages to work out it wasn't anything in the loft, we literally had everything out looking for droppings etc but there was nothing

Could it be birds?

Also I don't actually have an owl myself, I just think of it as my owl because it's in my garden every night. I also have a hedgehog that passes through in the evenings that I call my hedgehog 😍

I love this! We had a hedgehog for a time. I’d love an owl visit!

Somethingintheloft · 10/01/2024 08:30

@TeaGinandFags I have told him many times. He doesn't care. He's a hald kob kind of landlord!

I will look into a camera. We do have a cat but he's not good at chasing!

Littlegoth · 10/01/2024 08:37

Squirrel. We had one. Landlord kept insisting it must be mice. I booked pest control and agreed with landlord that if mice and no obvious entry point then it was my responsibility to pay, anything else was his as it would come under maintaining structure of the property - birds etc need an entry point which is landlord’s responsibility to prevent). They insisted it must be mice but set a trap anyway. A week later they pulled a squirrel out of the attic and I sent the bill to the landlord (his responsibility as it gained entry through a structural defect, which also needed repairing). Get it removed asap as they can cause a lot of damage, plus fire risk if they chew through cables.

Tinselunderthetv · 10/01/2024 09:02

Get a plug in thing on your top floor, they seem to work

Aposterhasnoname · 10/01/2024 09:09

Somethingintheloft · 09/01/2024 23:37

Ok pigeon or squirrel then! I don't think a mouse or rat would live this long!

I banged the area with a broom. It just moves to the other side. It's in the middle of the ceiling. So not pipes or gutters. It literally runs around!

Ummmm, sorry to have to tell you this op, but if a mouse or rat has been up there five years, what you are hearing is its decendants, note the plural.

I’d get a camera, you can get them really cheaply from amazon.

Squirrels! They're sneaky fluffy tapdancing bastards in my loft who keep me awake too!

🤣🤣🤣🤣
