Do your saucepans do this? Or am I being 'gaslit'? (pics)

First world problem.

I bought a small 14cm (1.3l) saucepan and it doesn't balance on the gas hob unless the handle is exactly lined up with the 'tines' of the hob. It topples over if the handle isn't precisely lined up, even if the pot itself is right in the middle of the burner. (see pics)

It was an expensive purchase (£73), and built to last a life time. But it's too annoying, and a potential hazard, so I want to return it. The labels were removed and we used it before noticing the fault.

Customer service has said that it's perfectly normal that small pots do this, and they won't refund it.

Do you have pots that topple over like this? Is it indeed normal? Or am I being gaslit by the company (excuse the pun)?

I've never had this problem with other pots of this size.

What is the brand?

What is the brand?

Silampos, bought via Borough Kitchen. I have pots in the same range, in the larger sizes, and they're fine.

No help to offer but I love those tiles @letmeeatinpeace !

LightSwerve · 09/01/2024 18:56

Yes it is normal, it is because the base of the pan is very small, so it topples in the direction of the handle if unstable. The handle being over the tine prevents that happening as the section is supported.

Sorry, they're right. It is just gravity.

Whattobakeiwonder · 09/01/2024 18:56

This has definitely happend to me. Small pan, heavy handle, gravity.

Thighdentitycrisis · 09/01/2024 18:56

That happens to me on my very cheap hob with my very cheap pans.

DownNative · 09/01/2024 18:56

Yes, it happens with mine until I put something in it and then it will sit in the centre. Any size, BTW.

Easypeasycheesy · 09/01/2024 18:56

It's a pretty hefty looking handle. I expect it's too heavy and causing the pot to topple when it's effectively just balanced on the gas hob. I've had this before, annoying as anything.

WormHoleInSpace · 09/01/2024 18:57

Yes I have 2 small pans that do this , I recently bought a new cooker and they both do it on that one too.
Its annoying but you kinda get use to putting the handles in the right position.

BronwenFrideswide · 09/01/2024 18:57

Yes I have had and do have a small pot that does that, most annoying is when it has stuff in it.

Dutchesss · 09/01/2024 18:57

Does it happen with a small amount of food inside?

Kleptronic · 09/01/2024 18:58

Yes I've got one, it does my head in. Inox 18/10. It wasn't cheap but was a wedding present 🤷🏼‍♀️

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 09/01/2024 18:58

Yep, I've had that. Usually a combination of heavy handle, empty pan, and cross shaped supports rather than * shaped.

DrNo007 · 09/01/2024 19:00

Yes they are right, it is normal. In Cyprus you can buy trivet type things that Cypriots use to stabilise tiny saucepans that they use to make coffee on the gas hob but I haven’t seen them here.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 09/01/2024 19:00

You could get a thing like this to support it more?

mynameiscalypso · 09/01/2024 19:02

Yes, that happens with my small pans and has happened on a variety of hobs. I'm just careful with them and don't full them too much so the contents don't slop out if they tilt.

FeliciteFaff · 09/01/2024 19:02

Ok so borough kitchen are hard nuts when it comes to this. The policy is rock solid. But to be fair this shouldn’t be happening and I do believe this is a manufacturing fault. Because BK won’t refund I would ask if they would allow and exchange. Failing that leave a review stating your case. Meanwhile if you do end up keeping it. Get a job diffuser from Amazon to help it keep its balance. From now one stick to 16+cm. Hope this helps.

Excited101 · 09/01/2024 19:03

Yup! Hate this. One of the many reasons I hate gas hobs

FeliciteFaff · 09/01/2024 19:04

Gosh the typos. Sorry.

-ask if they would permit an exchanhe
-buy a hob diffuser around 16-18cm

sondot · 09/01/2024 19:04

The problem is the hob, not the pan

Beastiesandthebeauty · 09/01/2024 19:04

Mine do but looks like we gave the exact same stovetop

Notimeforaname · 09/01/2024 19:04

Yes, as above, just gravity. There is nothing to support it when sitting between the supports...

springtome · 09/01/2024 19:09

We have Tefal pans and same tyle hob and our pan does this. We can't wait to get an induction hob as that top is so dangerous.

Thanks, this is super helpful. I have the 16cm and it's fine. I wanted to 14cm so I can fit more pots in the dishwasher.. annoying!

I might travel to the cookware shop with the tines of my hob in tow to test out some alternatives and see if they'll do an exchange...

It is not a fault.

Unless they made a pan unevenly wighted around the base to compensate for the handle, this is inevitable.
