To be so wiped out after virus?

ArticSaviour · 06/01/2024 17:28

Maybe it should be 'AIB Pathetic?'

Had a horrible cold starting from NYD. I am still feeling completely wiped out: wheezing, sleeping badly, panicky and unable to complete simple tasks without a rest. I am supposed to be back at work on Monday - I tried going to the shop yesterday and had to sit in the car for fifteen minutes before I could drive home.

Am I being unreasonable to expect to be feeling better by now?

It’s only been a week. Cold type viruses can wipe you out for at least 10-14 days. Give yourself time to get better.

BrownTableMat · 06/01/2024 17:42

Could take quite a bit longer, especially if it was Covid. I had something that started on 4 December and I’m still not back to normal energy levels - having to have a lie down in the afternoon to get through the day (luckily the type of work I do will allow this!). I hope you feel better soon.

LilianaVikavanovich · 06/01/2024 17:46

I had a filthy cold before Christmas, not Covid , I tested
I was feeling rough for just over 2 weeks , had a couple of days on the sofa , was exhausted and certainly didn’t feel strong enough to drive for any of that time

MammaWeasel · 06/01/2024 17:47

I'm on my third week post virus and I'm almost well again now.

Livedandlearned · 06/01/2024 17:48

I'm feeling exactly the same. I have had a cough and cold for at least 3 weeks and only improved after being prescribed steroid nasal spray.

I'm dreading going back to work- I barely made it round the shop and I only went in for a couple of things.

Glad to know it's not just me.

TeenLifeMum · 06/01/2024 17:50

Post viral fatigue syndrome is a thing. After I had covid it took 4-5 weeks to feel human again. But there’s lots of horrible colds circulating this season.

Mumteedum · 06/01/2024 17:50

As someone who ended up with ME/chronic fatigue syndrome likely triggered by covid and who has always 'pushed through ' and got on with it when ill, please listen when I say REST. Let your body heal and listen to what it's telling you.

You're not pathetic. You're not weak. It's just a fact you need to rest and get full well. If you must work, then rest all weekend and as much as you can around what you must do.

Don't end up like me by overdoing it.

SapphireOpal · 06/01/2024 17:51

This is exactly how I felt after having COVID. Did you test? If you didn't I'd assume that's what you've had tbh.

HamBone · 06/01/2024 17:52

DH and I caught a horrible cold from DD (18) a few weeks ago. Being young, she bounced back a few days after the symptoms cleared, but it took middle-aged us a couple of weeks. Take care of yourself and let your body recover. 💐

LookingGlassMilk · 06/01/2024 18:02

I'm exactly the same. It started last Saturday and I'm still coughing and feel really weak. I tested for covid and flu, it came up positive for influenza A.
I'm back in on Monday and can't imagine feeling well enough to get through a full day.

Newnameshoos · 06/01/2024 18:31

Have you had COVID? As in, not this week but in the past? Your immune system might still be recovering so it taking you longer to get right again. It also might be COVID this week, did you have a tummy bug between Xmas and New year and then the cold start?

Beansandcheesearegood · 06/01/2024 18:35

Op I could have written this. Back in work Monday but exhausted!

mynameiscalypso · 06/01/2024 18:37

There was something in the news the other day about 'long colds' and how 'just' a cold can still take a really long time to recover from.

SecondHandFurniture · 06/01/2024 18:39

I had the same from Boxing Day and it was Covid (the anxiety and trouble sleeping being reported in 10% of cases of the current strain). You can expect another week of fatigue, at least.

ArticSaviour · 06/01/2024 18:40

It is good to know it is not just me. I presumed it wasn't Covid as I had that in October. Maybe it was/is.

I know a couple of colleagues had similar before Christmas and needed more than a week off: I am a teacher and really don't want to have time off but on the other hand I won't be able to stand up long enough to do dinner duty, let alone teach.

I had two of these in November and December (week off in between) and then another minor cold after that.

I am still having wobbly days now, where I’ve just got no energy.

tested negative for covid and had flu/covid jabs in September so I’m thinking it was terrible cold/virus. But had exact symptoms you described.

stayathomer · 06/01/2024 18:43

Gp told us recently everything is harsher this winter, average cough taking five to six weeks to go!! Take care and rest as much as you can and hold off on tough jobs (on steroids for chest and was an idiot yesterday and feeling it back today)

Beansandcheesearegood · 06/01/2024 22:12

@ArticSaviour you actually might be a colleague of mine! I had (we all did) covid in October. Now got chest infection on top of what the Dr says is the flu. But feel I have to go in on Monday..... do feel netter than a few days ago but so tired and constantly coughing

Ha! Will have to work out a secret signal to check. How about coughing my lungs up in the world's most echoey classroom?

I came down with something on 28th and still don’t feel 100% better. Will be back to work on Monday though. I have a cough right now and a very heavy head but for days initially I was bed bound with all symptoms.

Evenstar · 06/01/2024 22:44

I have been unwell since the middle of November the worst thing being the relentless coughing especially at night, DH had the same tested negative for Covid but had a cough for about three weeks which is not like him.

My asthma is so bad from weeks of coughing that I have had to have steroid tablets, still feeling rotten.

turkeymuffin · 06/01/2024 22:46

NYD is less than a week ago. Honestly you need to give it MUCH longer. Rest rest rest.

Mumof2teens79 · 06/01/2024 22:46

Sounds like covid
It's been less than a week. A bad virus can wipe you out for at least two.
When I had covid first 4 days were just a heavy cold. Then the fatigue set in, and lasted 4 weeks

Nat6999 · 06/01/2024 22:54

I've had a chest infection that has lasted 3 months, it is only this week that I haven't dreaded going up to bed because the ten steps from the bathroom to my bedroom absolutely floored me, I was terrified I was going to pass out from lack of oxygen. Get as much rest as you can, eat easy meals if you have to cook for yourself, drink lots of fluids.
